To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, RICHARD XV'HUBBARD, a citizen of the 'United Sta-tes, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State oit' Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a speciiication.
My present invention pertains to hinges, and is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the hinges constituting` the subjects 0f my Patents Numbers 759,890 ot' May 17 1904, and 1,228,441 ot' .lune 5, 1917, respectively.
lt consists first in the improved fins on the shanks of the hinge members; the said fins being peculiar and advantageous in that they are thin at their bases-z1 e., where they are sheared or stamped out o't' the shanks and are correspondingly thin throughout their Width to their free longitudinal edges, with the result that they are adapted to be readily driven endwise into the wooden element in which the shank is countersunk.
Secondly it consists in the novel and practically advantageous manner of stitfening and strengthening the cover plates ol the hinge and in the utilization or the stiilening and strengthening means to el'ect connection of the cover plates to their respective hinge members.
The present invention 'further consists in the duplex and consequently strong hinge 'tor use in situations where great strength on the part o1 hinges is necessary; the said hinge being made up of upper and lower endwise opposed members, a. single pintle common to the upper and .lower members, and cover plates also common to the upper and lower members, each cover plate being connected with an upper hinge member and a lower hinge member and being flatwise opposed to and connected with said members.
With the foregoing in mind the invention Will be fully understood -from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, ac companying and forming part of this specification, in which:

The hinge illustrated as embodying my present invention is made up ot a pintlo 3; having a head il, and upper members Ii and 6 and lower members 7 and S together with cover plates 9 oli thin sheet metal suitable to the purpose. lhe members 5. (i, 7 and S are preferably of sheet metal, and generally similar to the members disclosed in my Patent No. 1,928,441 supra. Each member has a. knuckle or knuckles to receive the connect'.- ing pintlc, and each h as a shank 10, designed to be 'countersunk in a wooden element and connected thereto through the medium of a. screw 1l or the like. Each shank is equipped on its convex side, Figs. 2 and et, with longitudinal fins 12 corresponding to the fins disclosed in my Patent 7 59890 .'mprrt. The said iins lf2, however, differ :from the ins of the patent and are a material improvemeut over the same in that they are thin at the base-ei. c., where they are shear-ed or stamped from and form an integral part of the shank and are similarly thin throughout their width to their free longitiulimil edges. By virtue oi such equal thinness throughout their areas the fins 12 are adapted to be expeditiously and easily driven endwise into the Wooden element in which the shank is to be countersunk; and this without liability of splitting the wood which obviously is a practical advantage. The said peculiar fins are also advantageous over those ol the patent inasmuch as they are adapted to be embedded in wood without splitting thereoil and hence are better calculated to hold the shank in and to the wood.
Each of the hinge members 5, (i, 7 and S is also peculiar in that it is provided at 13 in its body portion with notches, designed and adapted to seat the complementary fiange 14 of a cover plate 9.y
A cover plate 9 is provided for coper'ai tion with the members 6 and 8, and a similar cover plate for ycoperation with the members 5 and 7 and from this it follows that the cover plaites are adapted to serve not only to enhance the finished appearance of the hinge, lbut also to connect the upper members with the lower members so that each upper member and corresponding lower member will be tied together and caused to move las a unit; the plates 9 being connected by brads 15 tothe Wooden elements. It will also be observed that the flanges -14 of the cover plates by vrestingin the notches13 of the hinge members'will securely engage the vcover plates and the hinge members, and at the same time will lend increased stiffness andV strength to the cover plates, vtending `to eifectually prevent curling of the portions of the pilates adjacent to the knuckles. On the other hand the said combination of notches and flanges will assure the plates resting perfectly flat, as is desirable, and :is further advantageous inasmuch as it obviates the necessity of 'have ing a plate for a male member ofthe hinge and another plate for a'rfemale member,
and renders it unnecessary for the carpenter to select a plate, either plate being adapted for use in engagement with either member. It will also be manifest that if the carpenter slips apiece of paper or ythe like between the flanged end of a cover plate and the opposed knuckles it makes a very close joint, Iand this without scratching orV marring ofthe kunckles.
- It is to be understood in connection with Y the `foregoing that my n improvement, and the combination of the hanged cover plate with the notched body portion of a hinge Y member may bel incorporated in a hinge Y made up of ,two pivotally connected memevolvingV departure from the scope of my invention as claimed.
I would have it understood that in the ldiscretion of the parties manufacturing my device, the flange 14 may be cut off a slight distance from their ends, in which case it will be unnecessary to slot the edges of the hinge at 13, and it will bereadily appreciated that when such a cover plate is used, the same will be in no way weakened and that the turned over portionwill bear against the concave hinge.
