Description

A. E. SNOW.
CLOTHES PRESSING APi ARATUS. APPLICATION FlLED )AN.29.1918.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR E. SNOW, 0F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, OF NORWOOD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CLOTHES-PRESSING APPARATUS.
Application filed January 29, 1918.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. SNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the count of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pressing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the fOllOwing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to clothes-pressing apparatus and consists of the improvements hereinafter pointed out.
The features of my invention are hereinafter described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side view of a clothes pressing apparatus with a portion broken away, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged transverse section of the buck B.
In these drawings A indicates a hollow pedestal having cars A A at the upper end thereof, the body of said pedestal bring preferably channel shaped as shown in the drawings. Upon the front face thereof is a bracket B which supports a buck B, which is hollow to receive steam from the pipe B by which the same is heated in the usual manner. The buck B .is provided with an upper plate I) which is provided with perforations b, and a chamber under said perforated plate, to which steam may be supplied when desired, through the pipe C, as hereinafter described, for the purpose of steamin the goods being pressed.
Under t e chamber 12 in the buck B is another chamber 6 to which steam is con tinuously supplied by means of the pipe B for the purpose of heating the buck B; the supply of steam to the chamber 6 being continuous, while the supply of steam to the chamber 7) is occasional.
Pivoted to the ears A A by means of the ivot a is an oscillating, bifurcated beam to one end of which is secured a presserhead D adapted to be pressed down upon the heated buck B, and on the other end of said beam D is a counter-weight D to balance the board D, all of which parts are Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 214,304.
old and well known in the art, and form no part of the present invention, the present invention relating particularly to the control of the valve by means of which steam is admitted to the pipe C.
In the pipe C is an ordinary spring pressed valve E having a valve-stem c, an operating lever E to which I pivot a bar F which extends to a bell-crank lever l which pivoted to the pedestal A, one arm thereof extending through a slot in the front of said pedestal as shown in Fig. 1, upon which arm a weight l is suspended to nor mally maintain said lever F, bar F and valve lever E in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1.
Mounted upon the pivot on between the arms of the bifurcated beam D is a grooved pulley wheel G. The bifurcated arms of the beam D are provided with extensions (l d which project beyond the front edge of the presser head D, and between the ends of these extensions is pivoted a hand bar or roller d, which is adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator when it is desired to raise or lower the presser head D as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1. Upon the roller d is secured an arm H, and from the arm H a cord, chain or cable H extends over the grooved wheel G to an arm of the bell-crank lever F, so that by causin the roller d to rock, the arm H is oscillate as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, and the cord or chain H lifts the weighted arm of the lever F, which through the bar F opcrates the valve lever F as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 and operates the valvestem e so that without taking the hand from the roller 0! the valve E may be opened to admit steam to the pipe C. The mechanism for operating the valve E thus shown and described, is very simple, but it is obvious that the valve E may be operated by the hand which raises or lowers the resserplate D in many other forms of mec anism not herein shown and described, without doparting from the scope of my invention; therefore I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement of mechanism hereinbefore shown and described but what I claim and desire to secure is 1. In a clothes pressing apparatus, an upright column formin the frame, a stationary buck secured to a racket on said column,
a pipe for supplying steam to said back, a valve for controlling the steam assing therethrough to said buck, a central y pivoted arm mounted on the top of Said column, a prceeenplate on said arm adapted to be brought into coi'itact with the top of said buck, a handle on said lever for operating it, a counter-Weight on the opposite end of said centrally pivoted arm, a valve operating device on suiti handle, a pulley on the top of said column, a cord connecting said valve operating device with a bell-crank lever one arm of which connects by a link with the operating lever 01 the valve controlling the passage of steam to the buck. and the other one with said cord; and a counter-aveight on said arm for operating said valve operatin mechanism in the oppoeite direction, enlistantially Lln .st-t forth.
2. in a clothes pressino' apparatus, a pedestal, a. bracket eecuret thereon, a. steam receiving buck on said bracket, a pipe to convey steam thereto, a valve to control the flow of steam through said pipe, a lever to operate said valve, a bell-crank lever secured on said pedestal, a bar pivoted to one arm of said hell-crank lever and to said valve lever, a, bifurcated beam, a pivot adapted to hinge said beam to the upper end of said pedestal, a pulley mounted on said pivot be tween the arms of said bifurcated beam, at presser- 'ilate secured to the arms of said hcam adapted to operate upon said huck, a hand roller pivoted between the ends of the arms of said bifurcated beam, an arm on said hand roller and movable therewith, and a flexible connection extending from said arm over said pulley and downwardly in said pedestal to the other arm of said bellcrank lever whereby, by turning said hand roller said valve may be operated, substantially set forth.
In ttestilnon hereof l afiix niv signature.
