To all Ywhom, it may concern:
vBe it known that I, THOMAS A, KEEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ollio, have invented certain newy and useful Improvements in Recording- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to recording locks, and the object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which will be simple in its construction and certain and accurate in its operation.
It is also an object of the inventionto provide in a device of this kind a time recording device which lwill be actuated from a source of stored energy which will be independent of, but Will be controlled by, a clock' mechanism.
It is also anobject of the invention to provide a bolt actuating device having movement in one direction only to move the bolt in both directions; and to provide means for positively preventing all movement of the bolt independently of the bolt actuating device.
It is also an object of the invention to provide' means controlled by the key against removal after the bolt has Vbeen released foi` operation, and to release the key for removal after the boltV has been operated and the actuating mechanism returned to its normal position; and to provide -means of this kind which will be of a very simplecharacter and will comprise but a few parts.
It is also an: object of the invent-ion to provide the recording mechanism with a consecutive nu `bering device, having means by which it will be advanced one unit upon each operation of the bolt actuating mechai nism.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a separable operating member forr the bolt actuating mechanism.

In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same as comprising' a base plate 1 rigidly secured to a door 2 and adapted to carry the several parts of the bolt actuating and recording mechanisms. Removably mounted on the hase plate 1 is ai casing 3 which incloses the mechanism carried bj the base plate and is normally secured to the base Yplate by means of a lock 4. A bolt 5 is mounted on the base plate for transverse sliding movement through a guide-way G secured to the base plate. This bolt is preferably moved into and out of its locking position by means of operating members. or knobs, arranged on opposite sides of the door, and one of which is controlled by the key. The operating members are connected with bolts through suitable actuating mechanism which is here shown as comprising a shaft 7 journalcd in a hearing in the base plate l and extending through mi elongated fil opening! 8 Vformed in the bolt, whereby it is enabled to su )port the inner end of the bolt. Preferably tlns shaft is rotatable in one direction only, and means are provided whereby successive movements thereof in the same direction will cause the bolt to be moved in opposite directions. To this end I have secured to the shaft 7, between the bolt and the base plate 1, a ratchet wheel 9 with which engages a spring pressed pawl 10. To cause the bolt to be actuated in opposite directions upon the successive movements of the shaft in the same direction I have secured to the shaft a cam 11, which is ar ranged between two projections, or studs, 12, carried by the bolt, and, in the present in stance, provided with rollers to reduce the friction. The cam is so shaped that a half rotation of the shaft will cause the cam to bear af'ainst one of the studs 12 and move the bolt in one direction, and the next half rotation of the shaft will cause the cam to bear against the other stud and move the bolt in the opposite direction. The shape of the cam is such that the diameter of that portion of the saule which lies between the two studs, in any position of the cam, is approximatelyequal to the distance between the studs` thus the bolt is positively 'locked against all movement independently of the cam. To center the actuating:r mechanism and check its movement when the bolt has completed its movement in one direction the ratchet wheel 9 is provided with recesses 13 arranged in dianictrically opposite portions thereof and adapted to receive a yieldable detent 14 when the actuating devices are in their home positions.
The bolt actuatingr shaft 7 may be of any suitable construction and may be connected with the operating members, or knobs, in any suitable manner. I have formed the shaft in several pieces, the central portion 7, which carries the bolt actuating,lr cam, being 'ournaled in the base plate 1 and in a bearing 15 carried by a depending bracket 16. That ortion of the shaft which extends through tlie door for connection with the outer knob, which is shown at 17, is separate from the main portion 7 of the shaft and has secured thereto a clutch collar 18 coii )crating with a similar collar 19 on the adjacent end of the main portion of-the shaft to form an ovcrrunningir clutch connection which will permit thc portion 7 of thc shaft to rotate relatively to the portion 17 thereof. The clutch collar 19 extends beyond the end of the shaft so as to forni a socket to receive the adjacent end of thc portion 17 of the shaft. whereby these parts are retained in alincmcnt. An operatingr member, such as a knob 20. is mounted on thcouter end of thc portion 17 of thc shaft and, in the present instance. this knob is provided with a trunnion 21 which is jourualed in an escutcheon 22 secured to the outer side of the door. A spring 23 is confined between the collar 18 on the shaft 17 and the inner end of the trunnion of the knob and serves to hold the clutch collars 18 and 19 normally in engagiement. In order that the escutcheon may be readily removed the connection between the knob and the portion 17 of the shaft is a separable one. As here shown the shaft is provided with an elongated slot 24 adapted to receive a pin 25 extending across the bore of the hollow trunni'on. Thus when the escutcheon is removed the knob will be Withdrawn from the shaft, and inasmuch as this removes all pressure from the spring 23 the portion 17 of thc shaft can also be removed.
It is not necessary that an operating member be provided on the inner side of the door, because it is not often that it is desired to lock the door from the inside, but such an operating member when provided must obviously be independent of the key controlled mechanism, as the key, in the construction here shown, can only be manipulated from the outside of the door. If an operating member is provided on the inside of the door and is always free to operate, it is liablc` to be actuated by unauthorized persons, either from curiosity or maliciousness, and records made which do not represent the locking or unlocking of the door. To overcome this objection and at the same time to enable the door to be locked from the inside, should this be desired, I have provided a detachable operating member. rl`he clutch connection 18 and 19 between the two partel of the bolt actuating shaft enables the main portion 7 thereof to be operated independently of the outer portion 17 thereof, which outer portion, as will hereinafter appear, is normally locked against movement. The inner end of the bolt operated shaft is also separate from the main portion 7 thereof, as shown at 26, and is rotatably and slidably mounted in a boilsing 27 mounted in an opening formed in the casing 3 and rigidly secured to that casing. As here shown the housing comprises inner and outer portionsl adapted to be placed against the respective surfaces of the casing and to be connected one to the other and to the casing by screws 28. The adjacent cnds of the main portion 7 of thc shaft and the portion 2b thereof are provided with tongue and Igroove to form a slip connection 29 between the same, and the other ond of the portion 2b of thc shaft is provided with a dislelilic hcad 30which is slidably and rotatably mounted in the housin,f r 27. is a spring: 31 which tends to more the portion 2G of thc. shaft outward and to disconnect. the salue from the lnain portion 7 of thc shaft, this outward movement being limited by u flange 32 carried by the outer is provided with notches 33, arranged on the opposite sides thereof and adapted to be moved into alinement with corresponding notches 34 formed in the opposite sides of the Hange 32 of the housing. A suitable actuating member is provided for forcing the portion 2 6 of the shaft into engagement with the. part 7 thereof and for rotating the shaft as a whole. This operating member, or handle, which is shown at 35, in Fig. 10, is provided with a fiat end portion having two inwardly extending prongs 3G adapted to enter the alincd notches 33 and 34 in the housing 27 and disk 30. An inward thrust on the operating member will force the head or disk 30 and the shaft 26 inward and will bring the notches 37 formed in the opposite sldes of the flat portion of the operating member into alinement with the Vflange 32. Rotatory movement imparted to the operating member will impart rotatory movement to the portions 26 and V7 of the shaft and will cause the flanges of the housing to enter the notches 37 of the operating member and thus prevent the removal of the latter until the shaft has been moved through a half revolution, it being apparent that the pawl and ratchet, 10 and 9, will prevent the reverse movement of the operating member. `When the shaft has been brought to its home position at the end of a half revolution the spring 31 will force the disk 30 outward, disconnecting the two parts of the shaft and ejecting the operating member. A pin 26 carried by the shaft 26 will enter notches 27* in the inner end of the housing 27 when the shaft section 26 is in its outer or normal position, and prevent the rotation of the shaft independently of the o erating device.
Suitable key controlled evices are provided for normally preventin the movement of thebolt into or out of its operative position. The means for accomplishing this 'may take various forms, but it is desirable that it should be simple in construction and positive in its operation so that it will not be ia'ble to'become disarranged or to be rendered inoperative and thus prevent the locking or unlocking of the door. In that form of the mechanism here shown this locking device is applied to the 'bolt operating shaft and is arranged within the escutcheon 22. A locking member or plate 38 is secured to the bolt actuating shaft, preferably by mounting the same on a collar 39 which is rigidly secured to the trunnion for the knob 20 and to the shaft, the connection with the shaft being formed, as heretofore explained, b v the pin 25 extending through a slot 24 in the shaft. The locking plate is provided on diametrically opposite sides with notches 40 and is provided in advance of each notch with a cam-shaped portion 41. Slidably the controlling mounted on the cscuftclwon. for movement lengthwise thereof, is a controlling member or )late 42 which is here shown as substantiallly rectangular in shape and as having elongated slots 43 through which extend screws 44 which serve to connect the plutc to the cscutcheon. The controlling member is provided at its upper end with a projection 45 adapted to enter one of the notches 40 in the locking plate when the latter is in itsl normal or home position. A spring 53 serves to hold the key barrel normally in its home position and when it is in this position the outer sur face of the cam-like projection 5;. of the disk 51 will lie substantially parallel with the lower edge of the opening in thc controlling member, and when the kev has been actuated to rotate the barrel 50 the projection 52 will exert a. downward thrust upon member and move the saine downward a distance sufiicient to carry the projection 45 out of the notch 4() in the plate on the 'bolt actuating shaft. The lower edge of the opening 49 is provided with an olisct portion to form a shoulder 54, past which the projection is moved by the-key. As soon as the projection has clealed the shoulder the spring 46 will move the plate upward and cause the shoulder to engage tho forward edge of the nose and prevent the return of the disk and the key barrel to its normal position. This rotatable toothed member is connected with the clock mechanism, which is shown at 88, the connection preferably being,r made detachable, as by a slip connection, as shown at 89, to permit the clock to be readily removed. The rotatable member 86 is divided circnmferentially into an equal number of parts, preferably 12, and in the present construction six of these parts are represented by the ends of the teeth, while the other six parts are represented by the spaces between the teeth, the width of the spaces at the circumference of the member 8G being,r equal to the circumferential length of the teeth. The arm 84 is acted upon by a sprin 90 which holds the nose 85 against the rotata )le member, or wheel, 8G, and as the toothed member rotates the nose 85 will successively enter the recesses and ride over the teeth, thus imparting a rocking movement to the shaft 83 and the escapement pawl 82, the arrangement being such that this pawl will be moved in one direction each time the nose 85 enters a recess and will be rocked in the opposite direction each time the nose rides over a tooth. Each movement of the escapement pawl in either direction releases the escapemcnt ratchet and permits it to advance one space under the eapandimer action of the spring'` and this movement is transmitted to the minute counter wheel. In the present construction the minutes are registered in units of tive and the arrangement of the teeth on the ratchet 81 is such that each movement of the ratchet will advance the minute counter wheel one space, or one unit, thus adding fiveaninutes to its count. The rotatable toothed member 8G being divided into twelve parts and each part bemg adapted to cause a reversal of the position of the esca pement pawl it will be obvious that the minute wheel will be advanced twelve spaces, or sixty minutes, on each complete rotation of the rotatable member, and this member is preferably connected with the hour shaft of the clock so that each complete rotation thereof will represent one hour of time.
While I have. in the present embodiment of the invention, connected the escapement with the hour shaft of the clock and provided for the registration of minutes in units of five, ,it will be obvious that the minutes may be registered in units of any suitable size` and that the connection with the clock may be of any suitable kind which will properly control registration of the units of minutes. Suitable transfer mechanism is provided for transferring the count from the minutes counter wheel to the hour counter wheel and from the hour counter wheel to the day counter wheel, this transfer mechanism being of such a character that the hour counter wheel will be advanced a space of one unit, which equals one hour, when the units counter wheel has been advanced twelve units, or sixty minutes, and the day counter wheel will be advanced one unit or one day when the hour counter wheel has been advanced twenty-four units. The day counter wheel is adapted to record thirtyone days and at the end of a short month it must be manually adjusted to advance it from the last day of the short month to the rst `day of the next month` skipping the intervening numbers on the counter wheel. It is preferable, inasmuch as this adjustment need be made but five times a year, that it should be made manually rather than that the machine should be complicated b v the addition of a mechanism to automatically take care of this feature of adjustment. For the same reason the months counter wheel (S3 is manually, adjustable. To make this adjustment it is only necessary to remove the casing from the lock so that access can be had to the counter wheels and they can then be advanced.
Any suitable transfer mechanism may be utilized for transferring the count from one counter wheel to another and that shown in Fig. 4 comprises a collar 91 rigidly secured to the shaft 59 and provided on diametrically opposite edges with cam-shaped portions 5L. A dog 93 is pivotally mounted on the lower counter wheel, which is the minute counter wheel when the transfer mechanism is interposed between the minute wheel and the hour wheel. This dog isprovided with a depending portion, or lug, 94, which is held normally in engagement with the collar 91 by a spring 95 and is adapted to ride over one of the cams 92 at the end of each half revolution of the minute counter wheel. The minute counter wheel, in the present construction, is provided with two series of numerals, each registering from 5 to (30 minutes, to accommodate the same to the diameter of the hour wheel which carries twenty-four numerals to represent. the twenty-four hours of the day, and for this reason the two cams are employed. Obviously, if the transfer was to be made only upon each complete rotation of the counter wheel a single cam surface 92 would be provided. 'Ilxe dog is alsd provided with a nose 96 which. when the dog rides over one of the cam surfaces 92. is moved outward into a position to engage an inwardly projecting tooth 97 on the higher` or hour counter wheel, thus connectingr this counter wheel with the minute counter wheel and causing it to rotate therewith so long as the connection is maintained. The connection is. of course. maintained so loner as the lug 94 of the dog is in engagement with the cam surface 92 of the collar and is interrupted as soon as this lug passes the rear edge of the cani. The cam is of such a length that the connection will be maintained long enough to advance the hour wheel one unit. Suitable detent and alining devices are provided for accurately positioning the counter wheels in printing alinement and for holding them against accidental displacement and, as here shown, each counter wheel is provided with a series of V-shaped notches 98 and a round ended detent pawl 99 is pivotally mounted adjacent to the counter wheel and is acted upon by a spring 100 which tends to cause the round head thereof to enga e the V- shaped notch and properly aline t ie counter wheel, and to hold the same against accidental displacement without offering objectionable resistance to the movement thereof when power is applied to the counter wheel to advance the same.
The consecutive numbering device comprises three axial counter wheels 101. The units counter wheel being arranged on the right in Figs. 1 and 3. A suitable connection is established between the units counter wheel and the bolt actuating mechanism to cause the consecutive counter to be advanced one number each time the bolt actuv atinf1r mechanism is operated and, as will hereinafter appear, the recording mechanism is actuated each time the bolt is operated, hence the records will be consecutively operated. The copnection between the units counter wheel and the bolt actuating mechanism may be accomplished in various ways, but in the present construction I have interposed a train of gearing between the bolt actuating shaft 7 and the units counter wheel. Rigidly secured to the shaft 7 is a circular disk 102 which, in the present instaiice, is formed integral with the ratchet wheel 9. This disk is provided with two peripheral recesses 103 arranged on diametrically opposite sides thereof and adjacent to each recess is a pin 101, the pins heing in the present instance mounted in the ratchet wheel 9, which is of greater diameter than the disk 10'2, and are arranged slightly beyond the circumference of the disk and centrally of the recesses. Mounted on the base late 1 and arranged to be engaged by the pms 10-1 is a Geneva gear 105, o ordinary construction. Rigid y secured to the Geneva gear is a spur gear 106 meshing with a gear 10i which in turn meshes with a second gear 108, which meshes with a gear 109 mounted on one end of a shaft 110 mounted in the frame member 57 and having secured to its outer end a gear 111 which meshes with a driving gear 112 rigidly secured to the nuits counter wheel. The operation of thc (icncra mechanism is well understood and it will bc apparent that with the. parts in their normal positions, as they are shown in Fig. 2, one of the pins 101 will be in a position to engage a tooth of the Geneva gear 105 upon the first part of the movement of the disk 102, thereby rotating,Y the Geneva gear a distance of one tooth and causing the concave face of the tooth following the one engaged by the Pin to be brought into engagement with the edge of the circular disk, thus checkin the movement of the Geneva gear and loc ing the same against further movement lwithout interfering with the continued rotation of the disk. The ratio of the gearing interposed between the Geneva gear and the units counter wheel 101 is such as to cause that counter wheel to be advanced one unit each time the Geneva gear is advanced the space of one tooth. Suitable transfer lnechanism, which may or may not be similar to that used for the time recording device, is utilized to transfer the count from the units counter wheel to the tens counter wheel, and from the tens counter' wheel to the hundreds counter wheel of the consecutive numbering device. In this manner the consecutive number will be changed at the beginning of each operation of the bolt actuating device, and in addition to providing a consecutive number for the record this device also serves to indicate the direction in which the bolt was moved, this being indicated by the character of the number, an odd number indicating the movement of the bolt` in one direction and an eren number indicating the movement of the bolt in an opposite direction. In the present arrangement an even number indicates that the bolt was moved into its inoperative position, that is, that the door was opened.
VThe key identifying device is arranged in printing alinement with the counter wheels, as above described, but is not, in the resent embodiment of the invention, in the orm of what is known as a counter wheel. As here shown the key identifying device comprises a disk-like type carrying member 113 having mounted on the face thereof in circular arrangement a series of type, each of which is adapted to print a mark corresponding with a mark on one of the keys. Preferably the identifying marks are in the form of letters, as here shown, and each key issued is marked with a different letter, the letters corresponding to the type on the type carrying member 113. This type carrying member is provided with a trunnion 114 which is journaled in a bearing 115 carried by the upper part of the frame 57 and so arranged that the type carrying member will be supported with one side of the upper surface thereof in a position to maintain the type thereon in printing alinement with the type on the counter wheels. Rigidly secured to the type carrying member 1ll is a. .shaft 110 which is jonrnalcd at its lower end in a bearing 117, also carried by the frame vmember 57, and is provided between its ends with a pinion 118 rigidly secured thereto and meshing with a rack 119 mounted for reciprocator movement transversely of the shaft 116. ransverse movement is imparted to the rack 119 by means of the key which is used to release the bolt actuating devices and the amount of this movement, and hence the particular identifying mark, which is moved into printing position, is controlled by the length of the key, the several keys issued for any one lock lengths. The rack may be mounted in any suitable manner. In the present instance it is provided at its inner end with a guideblock, which is here shown in the form of a piston head 120, slidably mounted in the hollow shaft or cylinder 59. The opposite end of the rack is supported by a similar guide-block 121, slidably mounted in a cylinder or guide-way 122 mounted in the base plate. A spring 123 confined between the inner guide block 120 and the screw head 86 at the end of the shaft 59 tends to move the rack outwardly and thus retain the t'ypc carrying member 113 in its normal position. As here shown the rack 119 is connected with each guide-block at one side of its center and a connecting rod 124 is secured to said guide-blocks on those sides of their center opposite the rack to maintain them in proper alinement. Connected with the rack is a rod 125 having a flat disk-like head 126 arranged adjacent to the inner end of the key barrel 50 and adapted to be engaged by the end of a key inserted in said barrel, and thus impart movement to the rack. Preferably this rod is screw-threaded into the guide-block 121 so as to adjust the operative length of the actuating device for the type carrier and thereby regulate the movement thereof so as to cause the type thereon to be brought into proper printing alinement with the t pe on the counter wheels. It will be o vious that the adjustment of this rod relatively to the guideblock 121 will move the head 126 toward or from the key barrel, thus causing a greater or lesser movement to be imparted thereto by the key. A locking nut 127 is mounted on the screw-threaded longer to hold the same against accidental) displacement with reference to the guide-block. The spring 123 which holds the rack, and consequently the type carrying member 113, in their normal positions also serves to eject the key, or to partially eject the same, from the key barrel. It will be obvious that when the key is in the barrel it will be subjected to a constant pressure by the spring 123. As soon as the movement of the bolt actuating devices has been completed and the key barrel has been released so that it automatically returns to its normal position, the pressure of the spring will force the key outwardly being of different thus either partially or completely ejecting the same.
The fixed form for printing the store or machine number on the record may be mounted in any suitable manner. In the present instance the upper end of the frame member 58 is provided with a socket 128 on which the printing characters comprising the form are mounted, this socket being so arranged as to support the type or printing characters in printing alinement with the type on the counter wheel.
Various mechanisms may be provided for taking an impression from the marking or printlng devices hereinbefore described, but I prefer to utilize for this purpose a reciprocatory platen which is here shown as an elongated bar 129 having a shank or bearing portion 130 slidably mounted in a vertical caring 131 formed in a bearing bracket, 132 rigidly secured to the base plate 1. This platen is provided with a narrow elongated contact surfaceadapted to engage only the line of type which is in printing position and of such length that it will only engage the type on that side of the type carrying member 113 adjacent to the consecutive numbering device, thus printing from a single character on that type carrying member. This platen is actuated by the bolt actuating devices in such a manner that a record will be made for every' movement of the bolt either into or out of its operative position, and the arrangement is preferably such that the record will be made before the bolt is moved, thus insuring that a record will be preserved before the bolt can be moved into a position to release the door no matter how slight a movement may be necessary to accomplish that result. In the construction here illustrated the platen is operated directly from the bolt actuating shaft 7 and to accomplish this l have connected the upper end of the shank 130 of the platen with a yoke 133 through which the shaft 7 extends, the yoke being slotted to ermit it to have movement transversely of tlie shaft. A spring 134 connected with the upper end of the yoke tends to hold the same and the platen normally in their elevated positions. Rigidly secured to the shaft between the side members of the yoke is a cam 135 having two projections, or operative portions, arranged on diametrically opposite sides thereof so that on each half rotation of the shaft one of theoperative portions of the cam will engage a part of the yoke and move the same downward against the tension of the spring 134, thereby moving the lateninto engagement with the type. Pre erably the yoke is provided with a roller 136 against which the cam engages, thus reducing the friction and facilitating the operation of the. shaft. To cushion the impact of the platen against the type and to permit the platen to accommodate itself to any slight variations in the movement thereof I prefer to connect the platen with the yoke 133 by means of a pin 137 slidably mounted in the end of the shank 130 and having a head 138 arrau red within the shank 130, which is made ho ow to receive the same. A spiin 139 confined between tlie end of the hollbw shank and the head holds the pin 137 normally in its uppei-most position to permit the platen to move upward relatively thereto, thereby providing a cushioned contact with the type. The record is printed on a suitable record sheet, which is preferably in the form of a web or strip of paper which is carried in the form of a roll 140 on one side of the platen and passes about guide pins 141, adjacent to the printing surface, to a second roll 142 rotatably mounted on the opposite side of the platen. The record strip is fed forward automatically upon each operation of the mechanism to provide a suitable space be tween the successive records. In the present instance this feedin of the paper is accomplished through t e Geneva mechanism which actuates the consecutive counter, the Geneva gear itself being rigidly secured to the shaft of the rewinding roller 142 upon which the record Lstrip is wound as it comes from the platen. The movement imparted to the Geneva lear upon each operation o the shaft is su cient to advance the paper the desired distance. The type may be inked in any suitable manner but I prefer to utilize an inking ribbon 143 which is carried by spools 1-14 and 145 arranged on opposite sides of the platen and is preferably adjusted by hand. p
It will be noted, by an inspection of Fig. 2, that the several mechanisms operated by the actuating shaft are so connected with that shaft that they will be operated in succession, and not simultaneously, thus distributing the load and facilitating the movement of the shaft. As has been stated the Geneva mechanism is so arranged that the paper feeding device and the consecutive number mechanism will be actuated by the first portion of the movement of the shaft. Immediately upon the completion of the operation of these devices the cam 135 engages the roller 136 and actuates the platen, an

It is also desirable in some instances to provide means for indicating whether or not the casing 3 has been removed and if so, how often. For this purpose I have mounted on the front wall of the casing an ordinary counter 146 which is readable through au opening in the casing. as shown in Fig. 9, and have provided means whereby this counter will be actuated each time the casing is removed, or in event the casing should be hinged to the base plate the counter would be o rated each time the casing was moved to its open position. To accomplish this a fixed finger 147 is mounted within the casing, on a lixed part of the mechanism, and is arran ed to engage an arm 148, which actuates te counting mechanism, and move the same outward, as shown in Fig. 1, when the casing is placed in position on the base. As is usual in counters of this kind, the actuating arm is spri operated in one direction. Consequent when the casin is removed and the actuating arm is move away from the fixed finger 147 it will be moved to its normal position and one unit will be registered upon the counter. It is immaterial whether the registering mechanism is actuated upon the forward or return strokeof the actuating arm because the mechanism is such that the placing of the casing in position on the base and its removal therefrom will necessarily cause the arm to make one complete operation, that is to be moved Erst in one direction and then the other so that each time the casing is removed and again placed in position one unit will be added to the count.
-The operation of the mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing desciption and it will be apparent that I have pr xuced a recordin lock in which the actuating device for t e bolt and recording mechanism is actuated by an operating member which can be turned in one direction only, and that this movement is utilized to successively operate the several parts of the mechanism; that said actuating device is normally locked against movement and can berreleased only by the use of a key, which when it has been turned to release the actuating devices will be locked against removal and'can only be released by the completion of the operation of said actuating device, thus causing the movement of the bolt to be completed and a record to be made. It will also be noted that I have provided a time recording mechanism which is actuated from a source of stored energy independent o, but controlled by, the clock mechanism so that ample power will be provided for positively advancing the recording devices and but very little load will be imposed upon the clock., thus avoiding all interference with the accuracy of its op'eration. It will also be apparent that I have so constructed and arranged the several parts of the mechanism as to provide a mechanism which as a whole is very simple in its construction and certain in its operation, and which can be roduced and maintained at a relatively sina l cost.

11 I have shown a portion of a record strip containingr five records covering a period of twenty-four hours. The letter at the left hand margin of the strip indicates the key used to release the mechanism when the record is made. and hence indicates the person, thc holder of that key. who manipulated the lock. Following the key identifying letter is the consecutive number. the even numbers indicatingr that the door was locked and the odd numbers indicating that the door was unlocked. Following the consecutive nuniber are the month and clay numbers. and
next to these are the hour and minute numbers, while at the right hand margin of the strip is printed the store or machine number. From this explanation it will be noted that the record as shown in Fig. 11 will be translated as follows. Store No. 1717 was opened b v the holder of key at 7.550 A. In a lock, a bolt, a key controlled actuating device for said bolt. a recording dcvice comprising a series of type wheels, a type carrier arranged in printing alinement with said type wheels and rotatable about an axis extending transiersely of said type wheels, a pinion extending transversely of said type carrier, a rack meshing with said pinion, a part connected with said rack and arranged to be engaged by the key which controls said actuating device, means for ad justing said key engaging part relatively to said rack, and means to ta (e a record from said recording device.

A key controlled identifying device comprising a disk-like type carrier having type on the face thereof, and rotatable about an axis extending transversely to the plane of said type, a pinion connected with said type carrier, a rack meshing with said pinion, a guide for said rack, a rod adjustably secured to said rack, and a head carried by said rod and arranged to be engaged by the key.
