Description

'A. H. PHILLIPS.
Improvement in Gates.
NO.'130,938, Patented Aug. 27, 1872.
INvEn-rna UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADELBERT H. PHILLIPS, OF PONTIAC, 'MICHIGAN IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
To all whom it may concern: t
Be it known that I, ADELBEET H. PH1L LIPS, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arran gement for Opening and Closing Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the girt, B, connects the posts A A, and a post,
C, runs from the center of the girt to the ground. To this post the gate is hung in any suitable manner. In the gate D is a latch, E,
' which locks in a post, G', on the other side of the road and opposite to the post C. From near the outer end of the latch E a cord, a, passes through an eye or guide-wire in the top bar of the gate, thence through a similar eye on the inner end post of the gate, and up to an eye in the center of the girt B, where it connects with two other cords, b b. These cords pass, one in each direction, through a guide-wire or eye attached to the under side, near the outer end of a bar, G, extending inward over the road from the top of the post A, so that coming from either side the occupant of a carriage can pull on the end of the cord b and raise the latch. In the same manner he can pull on the end of a cord, d, and open the gate from him after the latch has been raised, this cord d passing through a similar eye on the under side of the arm G, and through an eye at or near the opposite end of the girt B, and 'from thence to the top bar of the gate D.
When the gate is opened in either direction it is caught by a latch, H, pivoted to the post A, one on each, and from said latch a cord, e, connects with the cord b at or near the point where the same passes through the eye on the arm G. Hence, after the carriage has passed through the gate, the cord b on this side may be pulled and the latch H released, 'when the gate will close itself.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the cords a, b b, d d, and e e, in combination with the gate B, latches E and H H, posts A A and C, girt B, and arms G G, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of May, 1871.
ADELBERT H. PHILLIPS.
