Be it known that I, EDWIN H. Janus, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cleveland Heights, in the county of uyalioga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vvfheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cast metal wheels which, While capable of employment with various types of tires-secured in place either by bolting or by being pressed ori-is especially well adapted for use with dual tires. The invention also contemplates the production of a wheel in a single casting which has certain novel characteristics whereby its efiiciency is enhanced and its production as an intact casting may be accomplished, without resultant shrinkage cracks. Further and more generally stated, the invention may be defined as consisting of the combinations of parts embodied in the claims hereto annexed and illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part here` of, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view of such wheel; Fig. 2 an elevation of the wheel taken from the inner side thereof; Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view taken through half of the wheel; Fig. 4 an elevation of the wheel taken from the outer side thereof; Fig. 5 a sectional view corresponding to the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 6 a sectional detail through one of the spokes corresponding to the line G-G of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
As previously stated,' the wheel forming the subject matter of this application is primarily designed as a cast metal Wheel wherein the hub, spokes, and felly are made as a single casting which is afterward properly machined for the purpose of finishing and adapting the same to cooperate with other parts` such as the disk which forms an inner face of the hub flange and the rims on which the tires are seated.
The wheel disclosed specifically herein comprises a hub having a tapered or frust-o conical hub flange projecting therefrom, spokes extending from the said hub flange, and a double-walled felly the inner and outer walls whereof are connected by side walls, the inner and outer walls being connected by a central circumferential rib. the outer wall is provided with openings on each side of the central rib, between the latter and the side walls, the pillars or braces which are left between the central portion of the outer wall and the side portions thereof serving to prevent the collapse of the side Walls through the application of a tire base under great frietional pressure to the outer wall.
Describing by reference characters the various parts illustrated herein, 1 denotes the hub proper of the wheel, which hub has a cylindrical interior, preferably with a pair of short annular fianges 2 therewithin. At its outer end the hub is shown as threadedsee 3-whereby it is adapted to receive a hub cap, if desired. Jr dcnotes a tapered, substantially frusto-conical flange, which extends radially outwardly from the hub proper and toward the inner (or bodyfacing) side of the wheel and having its peripheral flanged portion 5 machined to fit and center the brake drum. (last with this flange are the spokes G, said spokes being substantially Usl1aped in cross section and having their ianges presented toward the inner side or face of the wheel. the flanges of the spokes merging with the hub flange 4. Radial ribs 7, which are preferably staggered with respect to the spokes 6, are formed with the hub flange 5 and serve to connect the interior surface thereof with the hub proper 1, and each of these ribs has formed therewith an interiorly threaded boss 8 which is adapted to receive a correspondingly threaded bolt or other means for assisting to secure theretoa disk, such as one of the end walls of a brake drum.
At their outer ends the spokes 6 merge with and abut against the inner cylindrical wall 9 of the felly. This felly comprises not only the wall 9 but radially extending side walls 10 and a cylindrical outer wall, indicated generaly at 11, said cylindrical outer wall being lightened by providing a series of openings 12 between the central portion of the wall and the sides thereof. The central part of the segmental outer wall is connected to the inner wall by means of a rib 13 which is cast with the inner and outer walls. The rib 13 is substantially T-shaped in cross section. Furthermore` in order to minlinize the amount of machining performed upon the outer wall in order to form a proper seat lior a tire base, the outer faces of the pillars or braces 16 will be depressed `slightly with respect to the central and lateral portions` of the outer vvall on which the tire base will be seated. lhere a` tire base is to be secured by means of bolts, the bolts will be applied to the apertures 1l and will extend through the notches or recesses 15.
The eylindrical hub proper, the hub flange 5, the spokes and the various parts of the folly are preferably made of the same thickness ol metal, the parts being thereby prevented from cracking through the cooling of the casting. It has been found that, by so doing, the best results are obtained in castingthe wheel.

Furthermore, because of the structural features described herein, the wheel can be produced conveniently and economically from a single casting and witlr ont the production of cracks due to shrinka e.
The wheel sli-own, described and claimed herein is similar to that shown, described and claimed in my application No. 85,468, tiled March 1l, 1916, being as to the features common to the two applications a continuation of such earlier application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim iszl. A wheel comprising a hub, spokes, and a cast double-walled telly, the inner wall whereof is connected to said spokes, the inner and outer walls being connected by side walls and the outer wall comprising a centrally arranged tire supporting portion, there being braces or pillars interposed between such central portion and the side walls, the outer surfaces ot said pillars or braces being depressed with retercnce to the central portion and the outer edges of said side walls.

A wheel comprising a hub, spokes, and a double-walled telly, the inner' wall whereol" is connected to said spokes, the inner and outer walls being connected by radially extending walls, there being braces or pillars interposed between such radially extending walls, the outer surtaces ot said pillars or braces being depressed with reference to the tiresupporting portions ot said walls.

A cast metal wheel comprising a hub, a tapered llange projecting therefrom, spokes toi-med with and extending trom such flange. said spokes being substantially U-shaped in section and having their flanges substantially flush with the enlarged end ot the hub flange. a telly formed with the ends of the spokes and comprising an inner wall and side walls, an outer wall connected to the side walls, and a circumferential rib connecting the inner and outer walls, said hub flange, spokes, and the walls and circumferential rib ot the telly being ot substantially the same thickness.

A wheel comprising a hub and a telly connected thereto, said telly having an outer supporting surface comprisin a central circumterentially extending T-s aped rib and a tlange on each side ot said rib and spaced therefrom and projecting toward the flange ot said rib, the rib flanges and the lateral flanges forming jointly supporting surfaces tor tire bases.

A wheel comprising a hub and telly connected thereto, said telly comprising an inner cylindrical wall, side walls extending radially troni such inner wall, flanges projecting toward each other from said side walls and overhanging the inner wall, and a support interposed between said flanges and torming with the outer surfaces ot the flanges a tire supporting surface.

A cast metal wheel comprising a hub and a telly connected thereto, said telly comprising an inner cylindrical wall, lateral walls projecting trom opposite sides ot such inner wall and an outer wall connecting the ends ot such lateral walls, the central portion ot the outer wall being supported by a rib extending between the same and the inner wall, the rib being recessed at intervals.

A cast metal wheel comprising a hub, a tapered flange projecting therefrom, spokes formed with and extending trom such flange, said spokes being substantially Ushaped in section and having their flanges substantially flush with the enlarged end ot the hub flange, a. telly toi-med with the ends ot the spokes and comprising an inner wall and side walls, an outer wall connected to the side walls, and a circumferential rib connecting the 4inner and outer walls, said hub flange, spokes, and the walls and circumferential rib ot the telly being ot substantially the same thickness.

A cast metal wheel comprising a hub and a. telly connected thereto, said telly having an outer supporting surta-ce comprising a central circumterentiall y extending T-shaped rib and a flange on each side ot said rib and spaced therefrom, the rib and the said [langes torming jointly llat supporting surfaces tor tire bases.

A wheel comprising a hub, spokes, and a east double-walled telly the inner wall whereot is connected to said spokes` the inner and outer walls ot the telly being connected and said outer wall comprising a eentrally arranged tire supporting portion and tire supporting portions on each side ot the first mentioned portion, there being braces or pillars extending between the central portion and the side portions ot such outer wall.

A wheel comprising a hub, spokes, and a cast double-walled telly the inner wall whereof is connected to said spokes and the outer Wall whereof comprises a centrally arranged tire supporting portion, and tire supporting portions on each side ot the first mentioned portion, there being braces or pillars extending between the central portion and the side portions ot such outer wall, and a circumferential rib extending between the central portion ot the outer telly wall and the inner telly wall and connecting the outer wall with the inner wall.
