CAR-noon FASTENING.

thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
vMy invention relates to car door fastenings. It has for its object to provide a fas# tening which will lock or fasten the door at opposite points or positions when closed, and capable of being released or fastened at one point when released or fastened at the other point; also which will be strong and efficient and may be made and applied at To the accomplishjects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which- Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a portion of a car with the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through Fig. 1; showing in dotted lines the locking lever in unlocking position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, enlarged scale, of the upper part of the fastening.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a car body of any approved type of construction, and 2 a door thereto. This door, single or double, is swingingly connected by suitable hinges 3 to an upright 4 and preferably comprises a metallic frame 5 with wooden filler timbers 6, and at the corners is strengthened by gussets 7 and 8 preferably triangular in form or shape as illus- 1 y. trated, the gussets 7 at the free end of the door projecting beyond the door frame so as to form flanges 9 which will overlay the adjacent edge of the companion door if a double door be employed, or the side of the latch 10 adapted, when the door is closed, to engage say the inner side or edge of the top member 10a of the car frame, which may be ar metal channel bar or iron, so as to securely fasten the door at that point. This Vlatch is preferably formed as a part of an arm or lever 11 and is pivoted say by a pivot pin 12 to a suitable part of the door preferably in a housing 13 secured by bolts or otherwise to the metallic frame of the door. This lever extends the length of the door so that its Outer end may be secured by a suitable fastening or lock to the car frame, say, to the bottom sill 14. The fastening for this end of the lever may be any suitable fastening but preferably consists of a pocket 15 having a swinging latch y16 which when swung across the lower end of the lever and dropped into the recess provided for it will securely hold that end of the lever to the car. This provides an eflicient fastening for the door at opposite pointsof the door opening and enables one fastening or latch to be thrown into or out of holding position as the other is thrown into or out of holding position. The arm or lever which constitutes a p art of the door holding means extends across the door from one fastening to the other and thus serves also to increase the efiiciency of the locking or fastening means as well as contributing toward strengthening or bracing the door. The pivot of the latch and lever is prefer` ably positioned, as shown, so that when the lower end of the lever is released and the door pressed outwardly the upper latch will disengage from the top member with which it interlocks when the door is closed and thus permit the door to swing open. While it is preferred to so dispose the pivot pin that the automatic disengagement mentioned will take place yet it may be otherwise disposed so that manual operation of the lever will be necessary to disengage the latch from holding position without departing from essential features of the invention.
When the door is closed thc flanges 9 of the gussets 7 will lap over the edge of the companion door, if a double door be used, and the fastening described will serve to hold both doors in their closed position, or if only a single door be used these flanges will lap over the edge of the door frame opening.
The fastening has been illustrated and described as applied to a vertically swung door but it is obvious that it may be applied to a horizontally swung door; or in other words, the invention is the same whether applied to a door hinged so as tovswing on a vertically disposed axis or hinged to swing on a horizontally disposed axis.
VThe preferred position for the latch and lever is that illustrated but it may be otherwise placed, and one or more be employed as found desirable or necessary to meet conditions.
Having described the invention, and set forth its merits, what is claimed is:
interlock with a part of the car structureV and pivotally mounted so that Vpressure on the door will disengage the latch, said lever 'being extended' across the door, and means Y provided for fastening the lever at the end opposite that at which the interlockinglatch is provided. l
3; In a car door, gussetsapplied to the Vdoor so as to project beyond the edge of the door and overlap the edge of an adjacent member, and a lever pivotally mounted at one end on the door so as to swing outwardly from the door and at that end formed with a latch Vto interlock with a part of the car structure, said lever being extended across the door, and means provided for fastening the lever at the end opposite that at which the interlocking latch isprovided.
In testimony whereof I afix my Vsignature in presence of two witnesses..
