R. BRADFORD.
RUNNING GEAR .FOR VEHICLES.
APPucATmN FILED MAYzs. 191B,

Q mhh l UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEETcE.
nornnrnnnnronnf or CALGARY, ALBEnTA. CAADA.,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RBERT BRADFORD, a subject of the King of Great `Britain, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Running-Gears for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates t0 certain improvements in running gears for vehicles and has relation more particularly to an animal drawn vehicle and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved connection for the forward end of the reach pole whereby the draft pole or tongue is prevented from undue lateral movement when the vehicle is traveling over rough roads and which movement otherwise has `a tenclency to strike or otherwise annoy the draft animals.
The invention consist in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved running gear for lvehicles whereby certain important advan tages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to-the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in top plan illustrating a running gear constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partlyin side elevation of the gear as illustrated in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan of the lower or bottom plate as included in my present invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings A denotes an axle having secured thereto in a conventional manner the hounds H and secured to the hounds H in vertical alinement with the axle A is a bolster B. Engaged between the forward ends of the hounds H for swinging movement in a vertical plane is the draft pole `or tongue T. The rearward end portions of the hounds H are connected by the cross bar C contacting with the under faces of the hounds H.
l and 2 denote rearwardly disposed lat- ""nunmueennn Een. VEHICLES.

erally and vertically spaced plates having their forward ends extending between the axle A andthebolster B and positionedbe- "tween theforward ends of the plates 1 and 2 1s a spacing block 3 whereby the plates l and V2 are" maintained in their desired spaced relatLOn.
The lower plate l has its rear end provided with the head 4 extending beyond opposite sides thereof and which is secured to the cross bar C. The rear end portion of the upper plate 2 is also provided with the extending beyond opposite sides thereof. The head A is secured to the intermediate portion of the arcuate member 5 `secured at its extremities to the hounds H at a point in close proximity to the bolster B.
t denotes a reach pole adapted to have its rear end portion secured to the rear bolster of a wagon structure in any conventional manner and as generally employed in connection with farm wagons. The forward end portion of the reach pole R extends betweenthe rear end portions of the plates l and 2 and is pivotally engaged therewith through posed member 6. The forward portion of the reach pole also extends between the cross bar C and the member 5.
It will be self-evident that when the ve hicle provided with my improvement is traveling over a rough or stony road the pole or tongue T will be held against jar or lateral movement in view of the fact that the pivot for the reach R as afforded by the member 6 is eccentric to -the axis of the bolster B and the axle A.
I also find it of advantage to employ the braces or supports S arranged above and below the hounds I-Lrthe lower braces or supports S underlying the axle A and contacting therewith while the other braces or suppcrts overlie and contact with the bolster From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a running gear invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and -forthis reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement the medium of the vertically dis- Copies ofk this patent mj be 'obtainedfor and formation of the several parts herein vshown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter clair-ned.
I claim:
The combination with an aile', hond''sicar-v ried by the axle, a bolster supported bythe hounds above the axle, and vertically `spaced cross members connecting the rear portions of the hounds; of vertically spaced plates extending between and secured to thel axle andthe bolster and extending rearwardly thereof, a spacing blockpositioned between the forward end portions of thev plates', each of said plates having its rear end portion connected to one of the cross members connecting" the'hounds, a reach extending be- ROBERT BRADFORD.
