R. R. HAYES.
PAINT BUCKET HAN-GER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24; 1911.

INVENTER 220/2229]? li a yea.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLIE 1B,. HAYES, OF PEOBIIA, ILLINOIS.
PAINT-BUCKET HANGER.
Application filed March 24, 1917. Serial No. 157,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Ronnie R. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Bucket Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for use by house painters, the device being attached to the bail of the paint bucket, and being adapted to be used in connection with a ladder, and when desired, may beattaclied to the siding of the building, and when so attached will support the paint bucket.
The object of my invention is to provide a hanger which is easily attached to the bail of the bucket and which, when so attached will not become accidentally disengaged therefrom, and which may be used after the manner of the ordinary hanger, as well as furnishing a means of support for the bucket against the side of the building.
The novelty of my invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing:'
Figure 1 is a side elevation of'one form which my device may assume showing the same attached to the siding of a building and supporting a bucket.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a reduced view showing the device used in connection with a ladder.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the modification of the device.
The same numerals of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
Tn its preferred form of construction my device comprises a base 1 which is tapered as shown at 2, Figs.'2 and 3, and provided with an aperture 3 through which the supporting member 4 passes, the supporting member 4 being headed as shown at 5, Fig. 2, to prevent its wlthdrawal from the aperture 3. The supporting member 4 1s formed as shown and provided with an enlarged} space 6 between 1ts depending members, the
enlarged space 6 being adapted to receive bail 7 of the bucket 8.
The supporting member 4 is formed with a second loop 9.which may, under certain Specification of Letters Patent. I
HAYES, a
Patented m 1. 1919.
conditions, be used to receive the bail 7, the supporting member then being bent at rightangles as shown at '10 and pointed as at 11, the pointed end projecting through an aperture 12 in the base 1 and being adapted to be snapped into and out of engagement with the base 1 so that the hail of the bucket can be introduced into either of the loops 9 or 6 previously described.
It is to be observed that the clearancebetween the portions of the supporting member 4 which forms a loop 6 is less than the diameter of the bail of the bucket and that the bail must therefore be forced into the loop 6, the result being that when the bail has been placed in the loop (land when the device is not in use, it remains in proper position on the bail.
- The modification shown in Fig. 4 consists of a single piece of metal 13 beveled as at 14 and provided with a tang 15 which may be either cut and bent from the piece 13 or mav be a separate piece attached thereto, the piece 13 then being bent into a loop as at 16 and helically coiled as at 17, to receive and hold the bail 7 of the bucket 8.
When in the position shown in Fig, 4 the device is adapted to be attached to the siding of the building. When it is desired to use it in connection with a ladder the portion 16 is hooked over the rung or side of the ladder, in which position the device re-- sembles somewhat. the usual paint bucket the boards so as to make a slight impression therein whereupon the device will remain in its attached position and support the bucket.
The device is capable of use on buildings which are shingled and also on shingled roofs. When used on a roof the bail of the bucket will in some instances occupy nearly a horizontal position, the bucket resting against. the shingles as will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
A paint bucket hanger comprising a base provided with a thin edge, a supporting 5 member attached thereto and formed into a loop for receiving the bail of a bucket and a hook by means of which the device may be attached to a ladder, and a pointed member forming part of said supporting member and passing through an aperture in said base and adapted to engage the siding of a building when the device is attached thereto.
