Description

- can of a (predetermined capacity and hav,-
OIL-CAN. A
To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known that I, HERMAN M. BERDAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colton, in the county t Minnehaha and State of South Dakota,"l1a\',e invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Oil- Cans, of which the following is a specifica'- tion, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings.
his invention relates to certain improvements in oil cans and has relation more particularly to a device of this eneral character embodying a forced feed, and itis an object. of the `invention to provide a. device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a ,force pump may be suitably arranged within the can proper and operatin to cause an effective flow of oil through tie spout. y
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the pump is readily applied within or re`- moved from the can and wherein the pump includes an Operating member extending 'exteriorly of the can and in a osition to be engaged by a digit, preferab y the thumb, of the hand engaged with the can.
The invention consists in the details of panying drawings, wherein; t Flgure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a can constructed in accordance with an embodiment of m invention, certain of the parts being in e evation, and.
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the cap as herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying'drawings, B denotes the body of my improved ing exten ng outwardly from the side Wall thereoflthe handle or hand grasp H. The central' ortion of the body B at its top is provide withan opening 1 defined by the Specification of Letters Patent.
' close proximity to the bottom of the body B when. the cylinder is in working position. The outer end portion'of the cylinder C is provided with an' outstanding annular flange 6 Contactin with the outer edge of the fiange 4 an with which the cap 5 engages for holding the cylinder C in applied position.
VThe inner. or inserted end portion of the cylinder C is reduced as indicated at 'Tand said reduced portion has its outer or free extremity provided with a valve seat 8 with \which coac-ts the ball valve 9 arranged within the reducedA portion 7 and operating to close the inner or induction end-Lof the cylinder C.
In communication with the reduced portion 7 of the cylinder C is a branch 10 of a length to terminate in a plane substantially flush with the outer wall of thc cylinder C proper, so Ithat said cylinder C may be readtly inserted or withdrawn through the opening 3. y A 11 denotes' a -feed tubeinsertible through the opening l and adapted to have its inner end portion threaded. upon ,or otherwise coupled to the branch 10 and said inner or inserted end portion of tliev'tiibe -11 is prov ided with an internal valve seat 12 with which coacts the ball-valve 14 or the like.
The movement of l.the valve v14 away vfrom itsr seat 11 is limited-by the inwardly directed pins 15 carried by vthe feed tube 11 and the movement of the valve 9 away from its seat 8 is limited by the inwardly directed pins 16 carried by the extended portion 7 of the cylinder C outwardly of the branch 10.
The outer end po'tion of the feed tube 11 is defined`by the o tstanding1 and laterally directed annular an'gl' w, ich.rests upon the outer edge 'of the H angehQ so thatthe coupling 18 at the inner epd of the spout S Patented June 24, 1919. application mea 151117,1919. seriaumzsaoev.
The top of the y and engageable with theflange vserves to effectively support the outer end portion of the tube 11 in working: osition.
It is to be noted that t e valve seats Sand 12 are arrangedin close proximity so that substantially immediate priming or forcing of oil or the likeupwardly throughthe tube 11 occurs upon the downward stroke of the piston P within tlie cylinder C. The. piston P is carried by the inner end of a rod or plunger 19 extending exteriorly of the cylis adapted to be automatically returned through the medium of the expa'nsible meniber 22, herein disclosed as a coil spring, in
terposed between the inner face of the (piston P and the annular shoulder 23 aiior ed at the inner end of the reduced portion 7 of theV `cylinder C.
The spout S has disposed longitudinally therethrough a feed pipe 2% which, when the spout is in applied positionn'communicates or registers with the feed pipe 11,50 that the .desired lflow of oil or` the like may be y i had' through the spout S. By this arrangement, Athe spout S .proper serves as'a guard or protection for the feed pipe 24 as the spout proper prevents damage to the Apipe 24 during a working operation.
The pipe 24 extends beyond the outer end of thel spout S and engaged with such extended portionis the tip T preferably arranged on a longitudinal curvature.
It is also to be understood that the cap 5 is provided with a central opening to permit tli'e'insertion therethrough of the cylinder C.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an oil can constructed in accordance with my invention is'particularly well adapted for use by rea son of the convenience and facility with which it ma be assembled and operated, and it Will also e obvious that my invention is vsusceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit'thereof andfor this reason I do. not wish to be understoodasiliiniting myself to 'the precise arrangement and formation-of the several parts'herein shown in carrying.
outmy .invention in practice except as`hcreinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A can ofthe class described comprising a body provided with a pair of spaced open-l ings in the upper end portion thereof, each of said openings being defined by an outstanding flange, a cylinder insertiblc through one of the openings, means coacting with said cylinder and the flange of said opening for securing the cylinder in applied position, the inserted end of the cylinder being provided with a valve controlled opening, a feed pipe detachably engaged with the inserted end portion of the cylinder, the op posite endportion of the feed pipe being provided with a flange engaging the outer edge of the flange of the second opening, a spout engageable with the flange of the second opening and coacting with the flange of the feed pipe to secure said end portion of the feed pipe, and a piston working Within the cylinder.-
2. A can of thc class described comprising a bodyprovided with a pair of spaced openings in the upper end portion thereof, each of said openings being defined by an outstanding flange, a cylinder insertib'le through one of the openings, means coacting with said cylinder and the flange of said opening Yfor securing the cylinder in applied position, the inserted end 'of the cylinder being provided With a valve controlled,
opening, a feed pipe detachably engaged with-the insertedv end portion of the cylinder, the opposite end portion of the feed pipe being provided with a liange engaging the outer edge of the flange of the second opening, a spout engageable with the flange of the second opening and coacting with the -flange of the feed pipeto secure said end portion of the feed pipe, and a piston work-` ing Within the cylinder, said feed pipe being provided With a controlling valve adjacent its connection with the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix iny signature in the'presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN '-M. BERDAHL.
