To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, CHARLES N. SKALLA, a citizen of the United States7 and resident of Milwaukee, in the lcounty of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and use-ful improvements in Sanitary Overflow-Valves, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are apart of this specification.

lt is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a sanitary overflow valve for bath tubs, lavatories and the like in which the use of a separate passageway to prevent the accidental overflow of water in plumbing receptacles of any kind is eliminatcd.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sanitary overliow valve in which automatic means are provided for preventing the level of water in the receptacle from rising above a predetermined height by discharging tlie surplus or overflow through the discharge opening of the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sanitary overflow valve in which the valve closing the outlet opening in the bottoni portion of the valve is positioned exteriorly riorly controlled thus eliminating the objectionable valve and chain within the receptacle.
A further object of the invention 'is to provide a. sanitary overflow valve in which the automatic opening of the discharge valve is controlled by the pressure of a column of water bearing upon the valve when in excess of a predetermined amount.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sanitary overiiow valve which is adjustable to varying heights of water levels.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates a plumbing receptacle which is of ordinary construction with the exception that the usual overflow opening is eliminated. The receptacle has an extension back portion 9 and a discharge opening 10 in its lower portion in which is mounted and extends therethrough a threaded and perforated nipple 11. The perforated head of the nipple is positioned within the receptacle and the nipple is held in position by a nut 13 threaded thereon and bearing against the lower outer portion of the re ceptacle. The improved overflow valve 1l; is in the form of a three way coupling or T-member! 15 threaded on the nipple and forming the valve chamber 1G and having a closed end tubular member 17 threaded on its side opening portion 18 to form an extension or weight chamber 19. The three way coupling at its upper end is provided with a valve seat 20 which is closed by a valve 21 pivotally mounted on the inner end of a lever 22. The lever 2Q is pivotally connected to and extends between lugs 28 which form an integral part of the coupling and project outwardly from the side portion thereof and into the extension or weight chamber 2a for convenience of manufacture. A pivot pin 25 connects the said lever to the lugs. The outer end portion of the lever is threaded to adjustably receive a weight 26 threaded thereon and a jam nut 27 for clamping the weight in adjusted position.
The weight is adjusted on the lever to counterbalance a column of water within the receptacle and resting on the valve and of less height than the container so that in the event that the faucets supplying the receptacle are accidentally left open and the receptacle is filled above a predetermined height the pressure of the excess height of Water will overcome the Weight on kthe lever and swing the valve to open position and hold the same in said open position until the pressure of the column of Water above the valve is less than the pressure tending to close the valve and the valve then automatically closes and thus maintains the height at a predetermined level.
In order to open or close the discharge opening of the receptacle at will a controlling means is provided Which consists of a short rock shaft 28 extending through and journaled in the end portion of the ext-ension 17 and at its inner end is provided With a finger 29 Which projects beneath the outer end of the lever 22. A stuffing nut 30 surrounds the rock shaft and threads into the extension to :t'orm a Water tight joint around said shaft. The outer end portion of the rock sha-ft carries an arm 3l Which is engaged by the loiver end of a connecting rod 32 and the upper end of this rod is connected to the short arm 83 of a bell crank controlling lever 34'. Thesaid bell crank lever is of the offset type and its shaft portion 35 extends through and is journaled in the back 9 of the receptacle. The long arm 3G of the bell era-nk lever 34 is located in front ot the extension back and is in the form of a handle adapted to be turned to swing the valve to open position.
The loiver end oi the three iva-y coupling member is provided with a threaded reducer member 37 for connection with a discharge pipe (not shoivn) in the ordinaryY manner.
In attaching the valve to receptacles of various kinds and heights, the Weight may be easily adjusted to varying heights of Water by unscrewing the tubular member and turning the Weight t0 the right or left.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the sanitary overflow is ofvery simple construction and is Well adapted for the purpose described.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
In combination with a plumbing receptacle having a discharge opening and a threaded nipple extending therethrough, a three Way coupling member threaded at its upper end t0 the nipple and having a valve seat adjacent the nipple, a tubular member threaded to the side portion of the coupling member and having an outer closed end, a horizontally extending lever pivoted Within the coupling and having one end portion extending only into the tubular portion, a valve positioned below the valve seat and movably mounted on the inner end portion of the lever and engaging the valve seat, a Weight positioned Within the tubular member and adjustably threaded onthe outer end portion of the valve lever for counterbalancing the Weight of the valve and a column of Water in the receptacle of a predetermined height, a rock shaft extending through and journaled in the tubular member, an arm positioned Within the tubular member and mounted on the rock shaft and extending to a position tc engage the outer end portion of the valve lever but not counected thereto, said arm engagement permitting the free independent movement of said valve lever, and manually operable means for turning the rock shaft.
