WRENCH ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30. 1913.

CHARLES lJELOS FIRSTER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
WRENCH ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1919.
, Application filed October 30, 1918. Serial No. 260;327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DnLos Fres- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrench Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a simple device capable of being attached to an ordinary wrench and when associated therewith changing the wrench temporarily from an ordinary wrench used for application to nuts and bolts to a pipe wrench for use in turning or revolving pipes or pipe fittings in the manner in which ordinary pipe wrenches are employed.
The object of the invention is to provide a wedge-shaped member which may be inserted between the jaws of a wrench and normally adapted to seat against one of the jaws thereof and provided with transversely-extending teeth so that when positioned against one of the jaws of the wrench it converts an ordinary wrench into a pipe wrench for the time being.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings in which similar refer ence numerals indicate like parts in the dif ferent figures,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an ordinary monkey wrench with the device shown in Fig. 1 in operative position with respect thereto.
The device embodies a wedge-shaped block 1 of suitable material preferably of hardened steel having on one face a series of transversely-extending teeth 2 with the points or edges of the teeth in one direction: and on the opposite face with a similar series of transversely-extending teeth 3 with the in clinations or edges of the teeth inclined in a direction reverse to the inclination of the teeth 2. In order to sustain the member 1 in proper position, I preferably provide the thicker portion 4 of the member with a transversely-extending aperture 5 in which is mounted a spring clip 6 the outer ends of which, when not in use, are adapted to lie in close proximity and which are adapted when the device is in use to embrace a suitable portion of a wrench in connection with which the device is employed. As an example of the use of the device in Fig. 2 is shown an ordinary monkey wrench comprising a fixed jaw 7 mounted on a shank 8 on which is slidably mounted a movable jaw 9 which is shifted in the ordinary manner by a threaded shaft 10. The device shown in Fig. 1 is utilized in connection with the wrench shown in Fig. 2 by positioning the member 1 with the rear or thicker portion against the shank 8 of the wrench and securing it in position by the spring clip 6 which holds it temporarily. The wrench can then be utilized as a pipe wrench for operation on the pipe shown diagrammatically by the two circles 11. lVhen the wrench is swung in the direction to grip the pipe for rotating the same, it simultaneously causes the teeth on the opposite side of the device to interengage with the under face of the head 7 and at the same time the wrench may be freely swung in a reverse direction as is common with pipe wrenches. If it is desired to rotate the pipe in the opposite direction, the member 1 is placed in contact with the upper face of the movable jaw 9 and a similar operation takes place when the wrench is utilized as a pipe wrench. The member 1 is capable of reversal in position and also capable of being operatively employed with respect to both the upper fixed jaw 7 or the lower movable jaw 9 of the wrench and is temporarily held in position by means of the clip 6. When it is desired to remove the device all that is necessary is to pull the members of the spring clip 8 apart, they separating temporarily for this purpose. lit is obvious, of course, that this device may be used with wrenches other than monkey wrenches but in certain instances the peculiar form of clip for temporarily holding the device in position can be altered to adapt the clip for connection with the particular Wrench in connection with which the device is employed.
I claim,
A pipe Wrench jaw adapted for attachment to a monkey wrench, comprising a gripping member adapted to lie in contact with the face of either of the wrench jaws and provided with transverse inclined teeth on two opposite faces, the teeth of one face 0 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 15 my hand.
CHARLES DELOS FIRSTER.
