To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD TINKHAM GrnsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Line-Guide for Copy-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to line guides for holders for copy-bearing stationery in which holders the stationery is supported on a shelf which is inclined downwardly and forwardly, and has for its object the provision of a movable line guide adapted to slidably and resiliently engage the lateral edges of said shelf and aline with any width of the f l his object is accomplished by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a line guide disclosing an embodiment of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of th line guide mounted on the shelf of a copy holder of the kind above mentioned.

Fig. 6 is a view showing the line guide in use in connection with a stenographers note book or other thick pad of paper supported on the shelf of the copy holder.

Referring to the parts by numerals, 3 indicates a portion of the line guide which I will hereinafter refer to as the bar portion. This bar portion is of somewhat greater length (preferably half an inch) than the width of the shelf (4 in Fig. 2) of the copy holder (5 in Fig. 2) on which the line guide is adapted to be mounted as illustrated in Fig. 2. The ends 6 and 7 of the said bar portion merge, respectively, into arms 8 and 9 which project rearwardly at right angles with the under surface of said bar portion.

10 and 11 indicate spring members which are secured by rivets 12 and 13, respectively, to the inner or facing surfaces of the arms 8 and 9 respectively, and which spring members, are adapted to co-act with each other to slidably and resiliently engage the lateral edges of the shelf 4 as illustrated in Figs. 2 an 5.

To adapt the said bar portion 3 of the line guide to be readily seized between the fingers and thumb of one hand of the operator to slide the guide upwardly and downwardly on the said shelf 4, the said bar portion is provided with forwardly projecting off- sets 14 and 15. And to hold the line guide against forward displacement from off the said shelf 4, the said spring members 10 and 11 are provided, respectively, with off sets 16 and 17 adapted to engage the under surface of the shelf when the bar portion 3 of the line guide is drawn forwardly away from the front surface of the shelf a predetermined distance.

T-o adapt the line guide to be used not only in connection with a single sheet of copy supported on the said shelf but also to be used, as is illustrated in Fig. 6, in connection with a stenographers note book or other thick pad of paper (18 in Fig. 6), the spring members 10 and 11 are formed of a width which adapts them to continue in contact with the lateral edges of the said shelf, 4, when, as is illustrated in Fig. 6, a pad of paper, 18, of the thickness of a stenographers note book is interposed between the bar portion 3 of the line guide and the shelf.

WVhat I claim is:

1. A line guide for copy holders having a shelf for llOlClillg copy; said line guide comprising a bar portion adapted to extend across the front surface of said shelf transversely thereof, rearwardly projecting arms at the ends of said bar portion, one at each end, and spring members, one on each arm; said spring members adapted to co-act with each other to slidably and resiliently engage the lateral edges of said shelf; said spring members having off-sets, one from the rearmost edge of each spring member, projecting toward each other and adapted to engage the under surface of said shelf when the said bar portion of the guide is moved forwardly away from the front surface of the said shelf a predetermined distance.

2. A line guide for copy holders having a shelf for holding copy; said lin guide comprising a bar portion adapted to extend across the front surface of said shelf transversely thereof, and end members, one at each end of said bar portion; each of said end members having an arm attached to and projecting rearwardly from said bar portion, a spring piece on said arm, and an off-set projecting inwardly from the rear end of said end member and adapted to engage the under surface of said shelf when the said bar portion of the guide is moved forwardly away from the front surface of the said shelf a predetermined distance; and said spring pieces adapted to co-act with each other to -10 slidably and resiliently engage the lateral edges of said shelf.
