ROBERT PLASS, or UPPER MonT'oLAm, NEW JERSEY.
WEB-PRINTING 'D'Evrcn.
Specification of Letters Patent- Patent a '27, 1919 Application filed November 24,1917. SerialiNo. 203,662. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. PLAss, a citizen of Germany, residing in the city of Upper Montclair, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Web- Printing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My inventionrelates to web printing devices and refers particularly to a device whereby impressions'may beprinted upon a continuous web at predetermined distances from each-other, irrespective of the diameter of the printing rollers.
One object of my invention is a device whereby printed impressions may be made upon a web at predetermined distances from each other.
Another object of my invention is a de vice whereby printed impressions may be made upon a web at distances irrespective of the diameter of the printing roller.
Another object of my invention is a device in which a printing roller may be employed to produce printed impressions upon a web at any predetermined distance from each other.
Another object of my invention is a web printing device which is capable of printing impressions at varying distances from each other. v
These and other objects of the device of my invention will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and claims.
In the generally employed methods of printing upon webs, the type 01' otherprinting means are aflixed to the outer surface of a revoluble roller or cylinder, the web passing between said roller and a platen. In this manner the web receives a printed impression upon each revolution of the roller and hence the impressions areequally distant from each other, the distance between them being represented by the circumference of the roller. 7
It is frequently desirous to print the impressions at a distance from each other greater than the circumference of the printing roller, this requirement being particularly important where the web is afterward cut into desired lengths, as in the production ofjbags. y
In the machines described above the dis tance between the printed impressions is a fixed one dependent upon the circumference of the ,printingroller and hence a printing roller of definite circumference must be em ployed in the printing of bags-of each particular size in order that the impressions may be uniformly printed upon all of the, bags, and as all of the other component parts of-themachine are in uniformity with the printing roller, a separate machine is necessary for use upon each class of work.
I overcome this serious difii'culty by pre-- senting' a machine, that will permit impressions upon'a web at any predetermined distance from each other irrespective of the size ofthe printing roller, thusallowing the one machine to be used in the printing of bagwebbing for any desired sizeof bags.
The advantages of the device of my invention and its economical production of web printing as regards labor, time, space and rapidity'of output are evident upon a consideration of my specification.
. In a broad way my invention comprises a device whereby any predetermined length'of the web may be drawn past the printing roller during the neutral or non-printing period of the roller, thus allowing the printed impressions to be separated from each other by a distance greater than the circumference of said roller. 7 a I In the particular form of the device of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar parts are designated by similar numerals I Figure 1 is an end plan view, partly in section.
1 Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of Fig. l with side frame removed, partly broken. and partly in section.
Fig. 3 is across-section through the line Fig. at is a cross-section through the line 4 4: of Fig. 3.
The particular form of the device of my invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a power driven revoluble shaft 10 carrying the spur gear 11, which meshes with the spur-gear 12 carried by the revoluble shaft 18. The spur-gear 12 meshes with the spur-gear 14: carried by the 'revolu ble shaft 15, which in turn meshes with the spur-gear 16 carried by the revoluble shaft 17 andthe spur-gear 18 carried the rev.- oluble shaft 19. The spur-gear 18 meshes with the spur-gear 20 carried by the revoluble shaft 21, which in turn meshes with the spur-gear 22 carried by the revoluble shaft The s a 121 ca r s e pla en ro ler 24, and the shaft carries the roller 25 having the printing means 26 upon a portion of its perimeter. The shaft 15 carries the platen roller 27, and the shaft 17 carries the roller 28 having the printing means 29 upon a portion of its perimeter, the position of the platen rollers and the printing rollers being such that a web 100 carried between them during their revolution will receive printed impressions. Meshed with the spurgear 12 is the spur-gear 3O fixedly attached to the revoluble shaft 31. The shaft 31 carries the cam 32 fixedly attached thereto. Revolubly carried by the frame 33, 33 of the device is the rock shaft 34;. Fixedly attached to the rock shaft 3 1 is the cam arm 35, upon the portion 36 of which the cam 32 abuts. Fixedly attached to the rock shaft 3a are the arms 37, 37, to the other ends of which are pivotally attached the links 38, 38, the latter being pivotally attached to the shaft 39, revoluble in the slide bearing 40, and carrying the roller il, the slide bearing 10 being capable of a vertical movement within the track supports 42, 42. Capable of being revolved by the revolution of the spur-gear 30 is a series of spur-gears 43', 4 1, 15, 46, 47, 18 and 49. The spur-gear 47 is fixedly attached to a shaft carrying the roller 50, and the spur-gear 4:9 is fixedly attached to a shaft carrying the roller 52. Abutting upon the rollers 50 and 52 and frictionally revoluble therewith is the roller 51, held in abutment by means of the spring 53. A set screw 55 abutting upon one of the arms 37 determines the length of the movement of the arms 37, 37 and the roller 41, and the stop pin 56 prevents the arms 37, 37 and the roller &1 from dropping too far when the web 100 is removed. Revoluble idlers 57, 58, 59, 60 and 61 are introduced into the path of the web 100.
If it is desired to change the speed of the rollers 50, 51 and 52, the set screw 90 is loosened, the frame 91 revolved upwardly, and the spur-gear 4E6 replaced by one of the desired size, the frame 91 lowered until the introduced spur-gear meshes with the spurgear et7 and the set screw 90 tightened.
The operation of the device is as follows When the platens 24 and 27 and the printing rollers 25 and 28 are revolved by means of the spur-gear 11 through the series of Y connecting spur-gears, the web 100 is drawn over the idlers 57, 58 and 59 and printed at approximately the same portion of the web by the printing means 26 and 29. The mechanism is synchronized so that when the platens and printing rollers are in position shown in Fig. 2, leaving a space between the platens and the printing rollers, the cam 32 will move downwardly, carrying with it the members 37 and'38 and the roller 41 from the full line positions to the dotted line positions, thus pulling an amount of web be tween the platens and the printing rollers, the amount being predetermined by the length of the stroke of the roller &1 as governed by the position of the set screw 55. The roller then returns to its extreme upper position and the loose web thus produced passes between the rollers 50, 51 and 52 and the idler 61, the speed of the rollers 50, 51 and 52 being so fixed as to take up and carry away the loose web during the next printing process, so that when the printing means have again completed their operation, the loose web will have been disposed of and the operation of drawing another portion of web can be accomplished. As the roller 51 is held in frictional abutment against the rollers 50 and 52, thus holding the web 100 during the downward movement of the roller 41, the web 100 will be drawn from the folded web supply resting upon a suitable platform 101 and hence drawn between the platens 24: and 27 and the portions of the printing rollers 25 and 28 not carrying the printing means 26 and 29.
It is evident that the device will thus withdraw the web evenly and quickly without sudden jerks, thus producing positive and uniform results.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number or arrangement of parts as described and shown, all of which can be varied without going beyond the scope of my invention as described and claimed.
