To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, VINCENT E. IInrwoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVorcestor, in the county of Worcester and State of lvlassaohusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful In provements in indow-Envelops, of which the following is a S1,)8Clfi0fltl0ll.

My invention relates (on window, or open face envelop, so-termed, and to thatclass of window envelope which are made of opaque material and have an opening therein, through which the inscription on the inclosure will be visible, said opening having no transparent patch to cover said opening.

The object of in) invention is to improve upon the construction of envelops of the class referred to. as ordinarily made, and more particularly to make the envelop blank of such a shape that the custo1nar v operations of cutting the envelop blank and forming the window opening, may be simultaneous.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my envelop, as will be hereinafter described.

In the ordinary construction of a window envelop of the class referred to, the window or opening is made through the body of the envelop blank and within the edges of the blank. In my improved construction the window or opening is not made through the body of the blank, but is made by recessing or cutting out the. edge of the top front flap, and the edge of the bottom front flap, so that when the envelop blank is folded the window opening therein will be between the horizontal edges of the top flap, and the bot tom flap, as will be hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 shows my envelop blank, before it is folded; the broken lines indicate the fold lines, and the diagonal lines the guninied surface.

Fig. 2 shows the envelop blank folded, and ready to receive the inclosure.

Fig. 3 shows the envelop with the inclosure therein, and with the seal flap folded down and secured to the envelop proper, and

Fig. 4 shows a modified construction of the envelop shown in Figs. 2 and 3; the broken lines show a side flap before it is folded.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 is the envelop blank, preferably made of opaque paper, or other material. The blank 1 has the two side thus 2, and 8, which are of slight width. 4 IS the to flap, which is recessed or out out on its horizontal edge, as shown at 4 leaving the two side extensions at".

The two side edges of the top flap 4 preterably have a gunnned surface, as shown by cross lines 4", Fig. 1.

i '5 is the bottom flap, which is recessed or cut out on its horizontal edge, as shown at 5. The recess 5 corresponds in eonfmanation ,to the recess 4 in the flap 4 above (lescribed, and has the two extensions 5. The flap 5 has a gnnnned surface on the projee tions 5', and preferably on that part ol the llap internualiate the two extensions :3", as shown by cross lines 0", Figs. 1 and J.

The broken lines 1', Fig. 1, indicate the fold lines, on which lines the side flaps 2, and 3, and the top llt l, and the bottom or seal t1: 5, are folded inwardly or toward each ot ier, to form the finished envelop.

In folding the envelop blank shown in Fig. 1, the side flaps or edges and 3, are first preferably folded inwardly, as indicated by full and broken lines in Fig. 2. The top flap 4 is then folded inwardly and the gunnned surface 4 thereon, pressed down on the side flaps :2, and 3, to secure the top flap l thereto as shown in Fig. :2.

The envelop, as shown in Fig. 2, is ready to receive the inclosure, which is inserted in such a. manner that the inscription thereon will show through the recessed or cut out portion in the top flap 4. After the inclosure is inserted, the bottom or seal flap 5 is folded in, on the line 1', Fig. 2, and the gummed surface 5 thereon adheres to the side flaps 2 and 3, and also preferably adheres to the inclosure Within the envelop, intermediate the two extensions 5".

The recessed or cut out portion 5 on the bottom or seal flap 5, in connection with the recessed portion 4 on the top flap 4, when the bottom or seal flap 5 is folded, as shown in Fig. 3, forms the window in the envelop, to show the inscription on the inclosure therein, as shown in Fig. 3.

In Fig. 4, the envelop is open at one end, by means of one of the side or edge flaps, as 3, which is provided with a gummed surface, not shown, on its top side, and is not folded in until after the other side flap, and the bottom, and the top flaps, are folded in and secured together by the mmed surface. The inclosnre is insertcfihrough the open end, and after it is inserted, the end flap, as 3, is folded in, and secured by the gummcd surface thereon, to the bottom, and the top flaps, to form the completed en velop, as shown in Fig. 4.

The advantages of my improved window envelop will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.

It will be understood that the details of construction of my improved window onvelo) may be varied if desired.

The shape of the recess, or out out portion, in the to Hop, and in the bottom flap, may be varier if desired, so that the opening formed in the envelop may have square ends, instead of round, if preferred, and the width of the opening may be varied as desired. The gummed surface on the side flaps, and on the top flap, and on the bottom flap, may

be varied or changed if desired. The shape of the side flaps may be varied if desired.

Havin thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

As an improved article of manufacture, a Window envelop, comprising a body having two side flaps, and a top flap, and a, bottom flap, the top flap end the bottom flap recessed or cut out on their edges to provide a window or opening, and having projections thereon extending beyond the recessed portions which projections are adapted to utt against each other, and form the ends of the window or opening, and said top and bottom flaps extending over the side flaps, and gummed thereto.
