HIDEO KATAYAM A, OF ODAWARA-MACHI, JAPAN.
MEANS FOR RAISING SUBMERGED VESSELS BY MEANS OF AVIATING-MACHIN'ES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMay 20, 1919.
Application filed. December 17, 1917. Serial No. 207,587.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIDEo KATAYAMA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 596 Mannen, l-Ghome, Odawara- Machi, Ashigara-S-himo-Gun, Kanagawa- Ken, Empire of Japan, engineer, have invented new. and useful Improvements in the Means for Raising Submerged Vessels by Means of Aviating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for raising submerged vessels by means of balloons or the like, which consists in covering the surface of the upper deck portion of the sunken vessel with a wedgeshaped or pyramidal structure so that when the balloon is connected with the sunken vessel, as by means of slings, the buoyancy of the balloon may be best utilized. The slanting roof structure reduces the resistance of the boat as it is lifted in the water. i
The accompanying drawing shows a side elevation of an apparatus embodying this invention.
The sunken vessel 1 is covered by means of a skeleton structure 3, which is secured to the upper deck portion and is covered by means of a covering 2. Slings 4 are secured to the hull of the sunken vessel. A boat 5 is conveniently used for carrying on the work of lifting the vessel. A chain or cable 6 is attached to the balloon or aircraft 7 and is secured at its lower end to the slings 4.
The framework 3 is made in the form of a slanting roof, or somewhat pyramidal in shape, 'as shown in the drawing, and is first applied to the sunken vessel. This structure is then covered with roofing material 2, which is composed of flat sides C C, preferably built up of planks, boards, or the like. The two sides G C are hinged together at their upper edges, which permits the sides t swing with respect to each other, so that they will fit over the framework 3 when in lowered position, as shown at A, or will fold together as shown in dotted position at B.
In submerging the roofing member 2, and
boat'5. The roofing member is allowed to descend until the pivoted edge 8 rests on the upper edge 9 of the frame 3. By slacking on the lines 11 which hold the roofing member, the parts C 0 swing down over the corresponding slanting sides of the framework 3 until the latter is covered as shown at A. This forms a temporary slanting roof, or pyramidal-shaped structure, and the openings fore and aft may be closed with any suitable material and in any well known manner. When the cables and slings are properly attached to the vessel, the balloon or aircraft 7 of any suitable type is connected to the cable 6 for lifting the vessel. A catch or check block 10 is provided on the boat 5 in order to engage the cable 6, to hold the vessel suspended in case of accident or failure of the balloon 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an apparatus for lifting vessels, the combination of a tender boat having a cable gripping device thereon, an aircraft for lifting the vessel, and a cable comiecting the aircraft with the vessel, said cable passing through the cable gripping device, whereby the cable may be gripped to hold the sunken vessel in raised position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HIDEO KATAYAMA. Witnesses:
H. F. HAWLEY, HARUTADA YASUMURA.
