CHARLES LEFFLER, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
coNTAiifEn.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be i known that I, CHARLES LErrLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Containers, of .which the following is a full,` clear., and exact description.
My invention relates to containers or cans and particularly to articles of this .class having a body portion of paper board, card board, orl the like. An object of my invention is to provide such a can body structure which will be inexpensive and at the same time fwill be strong and durable land will have a well nished and protected joint.` @ther objects are facility and convenience in manufacture. Still other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the following description.
ln accordance with my invention, ll provide a body blank, the ends of which dovetail together, and in order to securev and nish the joint or seam l provide a covering sheet, preferably though not necessarily4 on loo-th the inside and outside, Iwhich in the blank extends beyond the end of the body material and has its extending portion se cured down overlapping the joint when the can body is formed, vthereby covering, protecting and strengthening; the joint as well as producing a smooth finished surface.
l shall now describe the illustrated embodiment of my invention and shall there-- afterpoint out my invention in a claim.
Figure l is a face view of a blank embodying my invention;
Fig.. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; lFig. 3 is an elevation of a can body formed from the blank, part of the exterior covering sheet being torn away to disclose titi the joint.
Fig. 4L is a central vertical section in elevation showin the inner side of the joint with part of t e inner covering sheet torn away; and j 1lifig. 5 is a'horizonrtal section of the 'can body.. e
' The can body material preferably is a Speeication of Letters Patent.

sheet of brous material a, such as paper board or card board, and its ends are provided with dovetail projections a and of', respectively, which interlock as shown in Figs. Sandt when the can body is formed. Toreinforce and protect the joint as well as to finish the faces of the can body, covering sheets are provided which overlap the `joint both interiorly and eXteriorly. The outer coverin sheet Zn, which may serve for the label, if desired, is' secured to the outer face of the body material a, and, as shown, eX- tends in the blank from the inner ends of the projections c to a substantialy distance beyondthe outer ends of theJ projections a. Similarly the inner or lining sheet'c extends from the inner ends of the projections a to a substantial distance beyond the outer ends of the projections c. I v
ln' formingthe can body from the blank` the blank is wrapped around a forming mandrel of the desired shape and the two dovetail ends are interlocked. At the same time the extending ends of the covering sheets, which are provided with gum or other adhesive, are stuck down overlapping the joint, as shown in Fig. 5, thereby securing `and covering the joint, and giving both the inside and outside of the cana nished, smooth surface. llt will be noted that there is no metal to'contact with the contents of the can, and that the operation of forming the can body can "be very quickly and easily performed. While the invention is especially adapted to paper cans, it is not necessarily limited to that material,l and other modifications maybe made in thespecific structure shown and described without departing 'fromthe scope of vmy invention.
l claim:
l A blank for can bodies comprising a sheet of material havingdovetail projections at. each end, the projections at one end being adapted to interlock with those at the other end, a relativelyuthin interior sheet secured to the inner' face of the material and extending beyond the ends ofthe dovetail pro' jections at one end of the material and stopping short of said projections at the other end, and a .relatively thin exterior sheet se 2 1,sos,es7
cured to the outer face of the material and secured over the joint respectively inteextendng beyond the dovetail projections riorly and exterorly thereof when the can at said other end of the material and stopbody is formed.
ping short of the projections at the oppo- In Witness whereof I subscribe my signa- 5 site end of the material, the extending porture.
tions of the two sheets being adapted to be CHAS. LEFFLER.
