Fig. 19 is an enlarged elevation of one of the stationary knockdown mounting members at the front edge of the sofa fra-me with the crank arm and lifting spring in their bed position.
Fig. 20 is a section on the line D-D of Fig. 18 through the mounting members and associated parts on one side of the sofa bed.
vFig.,21 is a section on the line E-E of Fig. 19.
In the construction shown the sofa frame comprises apair of ends 2 and cross member 3. The bed bottom is made in the form of a series of foldiably related sections extensible crosswise of the frame and including an upright foot or back section 5, a seat section 6, a connecting section 7 a bottom section 8 and a head section 9 arranged in the order recited. The bed bottom parts are combined and arranged so as to provide a jointed border frame including side rails and head and foot rails and a spring wire mattress 12 carried thereby.
A back member 13 is attached slidably to the foot section in such manner as ,to move downwardlyso'mewhat away from the frame of the =bed bottom, suiicien-tly to give clearance for the bed sp-ring 12 when the device is changed to its bed form.
A seat 15 is attached to the reverse side of the seat section for lowering -in a manner adapted to give clearance for the bed spring 12 when the device is unfolded. For this pur ose a connecting bracket or arm is provide on each side, the rear end of each bracket being in the'form of an angle bar 17 fixed tothe adjacent side rail of the seat section, and the front end being in the form of a slotted plate 18 fixed to the bar 17. Each plate 18-is turnablv connected to the from m of the Sofa ends 2 in Staat-1e relation t creto, as Aillustrated in Fig. 18. The longitudinal slot 20 of each bracket coacts with a pivot-like shoulder 21 o-n the adjacent sofa end 2. The s eat 15 is connected I, adjustment.
turnab'ly and slidably to said bracket, Whereby it is permitted to drop downward therefrom by gravity as the Seat section overturns forwardly.
The rear part of the seat frame is provided with a mounting plate 23 on each side, said plates ea'ch having a horizontal guide slot 24 open at its rear edge. (See Fig. 15.) Coacting with said slot is a shoulder 26 on one arm 27 of a lever 28, the other arm. 29 of which operates the back 13, said lever being fulcrumed at 30 on the re-ar end of the bar 17. In unfolding the device the lever 28 swings the rear part of the seat downward somewhat away from the bed bottom.
The front part of the seat is carried by a pair of lateral links 31 disposed medially on the ends of the seat frame. Each link 31 is wedge-shaped and disposed horizontally with the apex pointing rearwardly and connected to a seat pivot 31.5 on a plate 32 fixed to lthe seat frame. The broad forward part of link 31 has two guide 'slots concentric with said pivot. The cuter slot 33 has a branch aperture 34 communicating with the front edge of the link, and the limer slot 36 coacts with a headed Stop pin or shoulder 37 on said plate 32.
. Coacting with slot 33 is a headed shoulder 39 on thel main guide pla-te 18 at its rear upper corner. (See Fig. 14.) l When the seat overturns, the shoulders 37 and 39 travel lthe full length of said slots 36 and 33 respectively, as the seat swings by gravity from one position to the other with respect to the seat section.
The seat frame is assembled with the other members by holding the same above and in front of its sofa position, and then sliding it backward causing the pivots 26 to enter the rear slots 24. Then the front part is lowered .till the stud 39 registers with the aperture 34, shoulder 40 assisting in this The seat is then drawn forward and permitted to drop into place with the shoulders 39 in the slots 33. Gravity serves to hold ythe seat in operative position forall normal conditions of operation, the seat being supported always by the bed bottom.
A pair of carrying arms or links 41 and 42 for the foot Section5 are provided on each side, each ar-m being turnably connected to the lower part of the side rail, one at or adjacent to the seat section joint, as at 43, and the other spaced upward therefrom at 44 respectively. Each of said arms 41 and 42 is angular, with a long arm extending rearward and a short arm extending down in front of pivot 21 when the device is folded. (See Fig. 10.) The forward end ofthelower arm 41 is turnably connected to the front part of the adjacent sof-a end 2, as at 45.
