Description

E. E. DUNHAM.
VIOLIN.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 16. 1am.

INVENTOR f 149F577 1g". flaw/MM j urn mm ATTORNEY EVERETT E. DUNHAM, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
VIOLIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed July 16, 1918. Serial No. 245,417.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT E. DUNHAM, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Violins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in violins and the object of my invention is to render the shape of violins more convenient for the player without detracting from their resonant qualities, by forming the upper body portion of the violin so that the player can easily press the strings with the left hand at the points necessary to produce the high notes.
This violin is designed especially for the use of students and beginners who experience difficulty in reaching the strings at the proper points to produce the high notes when they are learning to play.
My invention consists in the novel form of construction of a violin as will be more clearly described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing the single figure is a plan view of a violin constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is illustrated a violin comprising a lower body portion 1, an upper body portion 2, and a waist portion 3 that is formed between the usual C-shaped curves 4 that are located about midway of the length of the violin body.
All of the above parts except one side of the upper body portion are of well known standard shape and form of construction.
My invention consists in removing the right hand side of the upper body portion 2 on a line 5 extending from the C-shaped curve 4 to the intersection of the neck 6 with the upper body portion 2 as clearly shown in the drawing.
The removal of the right hand side of the upper body portion 2 of the violin enables the player more easily and conveniently to reach his left hand around the upper portion of the violin and finger the strings where they must be fingered to produce the higher notes on the instrument.
It. has been found that the cuttin away of this portion of the body of a violin does not seriously impair the tone qualities and that it makes the strings much more easily accessible to the player.
What I claim is:
1. A violin one side of its upper body portion removed on a line extending from the intersection of the violin neck and body to the C-shaped curve in the side of the violin.
2. A violin comprising a lower symmetrical rounded body portion, a symmetrical waist portion formed between oppositely disposed C-shaped curves and a non-symmetrical upper body portion one side of which is rounded outwardly and the opposite side of which is removed on a line extending from the intersection of the violin neck and body to the C-shaped curve in the side of the violin.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 10th day of July, A. D. 1918.
EVERETT E. DUNHAM.
