Be it known that I, CHARLES F. LErnvEn, a citizen of' the United States of America, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a gun of the type in which air is compressed to eject the projectile. One 0f the objects of the invention is to obtain a construction in which the tube containing the projectile is removably engageable with the barrel of the gun and forms a cylinder within which air is compressed for ejecting the projectile, Another object is to Obtain means for ejecting the tube and for safe-guarding the manipulator of the gun when the tube is removed and also means for positioning the tube within the barrel of the gun. A further object is to obtain a construction which is very similar in appearance to an army riie. Still further obj ects reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

A is the stock of fthe gun having the hand portion A', B the barrel, C the trigger, C the side plates on opposite sides: of the trigger and depending from the barrel, D the trigger guard, and E and E are, respectively, the rear and forward sights mounted upon the barrel. .For securing the barrelB to the stock A and its hand portion A the clip F is provided surrounding and `slidably engaginof the forward ends of the barrel and the hand portion and the screw D is provided threadedly engaging the strap C2 con necting the depending side plates. The screw also secures the forward end of the trigger uard D to the hand portion.
For t e purpose of further giving the gun the appearance of an army riie the strap Il" is secured to the clip F and to the rear end i cf the stock A and the locking bolt G having the laterally-extending handle Gr rigidly mounted upon mits rear end, is slidably mounted within thebarrel B.
The barrel B is pro-videdin'its upper portions with the elongated aperture H through which the tube I may be inserted into the barrel and with the elongated slot H having at its forward end a laterally-extending recess I-I2 which slot and recess `are slidably engaged b-y theguide J upon the-locking bolt G. The strap B for'reinforcing the barrel B is connected to rthe outer sides thereof and extends Iover the'slot I-I, suicient clearance being provided 'for the passage of the guide J along the slot. The locking bolt G is `hollow and has its forward end rigidly secured to the cylinder K which has an Outer diameter such that it slida-bly fits within the annulus K within the'barrel B and has an inner diameter equal to the inner diameter lof the tube I.
For positioning the tube within the barrel B, fthe cylinder K has the tapering forward end K2 which is adaptedto engage the outwardly flaring end I of the tube I. The barrel B is provided with the annulus -L located forward of the apertureH and having its rear end L tapering. The tube I has its forward end I2 of reduced diameterl which end slidably engages the tapering end L and is positioned thereby, the forward movement of the tube vbeing limited by the shoulder I8 contacting with the taperino' end L. The projectile M is made of yielzdable i tube I. This lplumger is rigidly connected.

Connected to the lower end of the detent member O is the forwardly-extending rod P substantially parallel to the rod N. The rod P extends through the strap Q connecting the forward ends of the depending side plates C and,
has at its forward end the transverselyextending member' P. A coil spring Q is provided surrounding the rod P and abutting against the strap Q and the trans- 5 versely-extending member P. The hand .portion Aof the stock :forms the housing for inclosing the spring. The locking bolt Gr has the longitudinal slot Gz'in'its lower portion through which the detent member O Ipasses, the slot extending from 4the rear end ofthe locking bolttothe cylinder K. The plunger N is withdrawn by meansof the lower forward cud G3 of the locking bolt Gr contacting with the detent member O. Upon further backward movement of the locking bolt the detent O is engaged by the sear R and the spring Q is placed under greater compression.
A vtube with its projectile can now be placed into the barrel B by forcing the inner end of the ejector rod S downward and this tube is positioned by moving the locking bolt G forward with its guide J engaging the slot H when the cylinder K engages the tube I so that both the forward and rear lends of the tube are positioned. By rotating the locking bolt G to place the guide J in the laterally-extending recess H2 the tube is locked in position and the gun is in condition to be again fired.
When the tube I is not in place, the inner end of the ejector rod S is in the path of movement of the plunger N so that the latter can not move into the tube space when the gun is uncooked. Furthermore the ej ector rod S can not be forced out of engagement until the plunger N is moved backward due to the flanges U upon the plunger N. To assist in giving the gun the appearance of an army rifle, the tube I is made to look like a cartridge and is adapted to receive the projectile before insertion into the barrel of the gun.
From the above description it will be readily seen that a gun is provided which has the appearance of an army rifle and is safe t0 operate either when the tube is in or out of place. Furthermore, it is seen that the tube forms the cylinder for the compressed air and is positioned within the gun so that the plunger will easily engage the tube.
That I claim as my invention, is:
l. In a gun provided with a barrel, a tube simulating a cartridge, insertible into the barrel of the gun to form an element of the air compression chamber.
2. In a gun provided with a barrel, a tube simulating a cartridge and adapted to receive a projectile, said tube with the projectile insertible into the barrel of the gun and forming a chamber for compressed air.
3. In a gun provided with a barrel, a tube simulating a cartridge and having a seat for a projectile, said tube with the projectile engageable with and removable from the'ba'rrel of the gun, and means for compressing air withinv said tube to eject the projectile.
4. In a gun provided with a barrel, a tube simulating a cartridge and insertible into the barrel of the gun, and a plunger movable within said tube for compressing air.
5. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube, means for compressing air within said tube, and means for ejectiug said tube fromsaidbarrel.
6. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube engageable therewith, an ejector rod projecting through the under side of said barrel, and a spring for normally holding one end of said ejector rod in said barrel.
In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube engageable therewith, a plunger slidably engaging said barrel and adapted to slidably engage said tube, and means for limiting the movement of said plunger when said tub-e is disengaged from said bar-rel.
8. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube engageable therewith, a plunger slidably engaging said barrel, and a common means for ejecting said tube and for limiting the movement of said plunger after the tube is ejected.
9. In a gun, the combination With a barrel, of `a plunger slidably engaging said barrel, means for contacting with said plunger to limit its movement in one direction, and means for preventing the disengagement of said contacting means from said plunger.
10. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a plunger slidably` engaging said barrel, a rod mounted on said barrel and adapted to contact with said plunger, said plunger having an outwardly projecting ange for preventing the lateral disengagement of said. rod from said plunger.
11. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube simulating a cartridge and insertible into said barrel, means for positioning said tube within said barrel, and means for compressing air within said tube.
12. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a tube engageable therewith, a locking bolt engageable with one end of said tube for positioning the same within said barrel, yand a plunger for compressing air` having a reduced end portion engageable with said barrel portion of reduced diameter.
15. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a plunger therewithin, a plunger rod, a detent member rigidly connected to said plunger rod, a second rod directly connected to said detent mem-ber, a coil spring surrounding said second rod, and trigger mechanism engaging said detent member.
16. In a un, the combination with a bar rel, of a tu e laterally insertible into said barrel and forming an element of an air compression chamber.
17. In a gun, the combination with a barrel having an aperture in its wall, of a tube insertible into said barrel through said aperture.
