To all whom it may concern:

Be it lmown that I, CLIFFORD G. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention which is an improvement on the expansible bracelet described in my Patent No. 1,264,810 dated April 30, 1918 has for its object the improvement and simplification of the member which hingedly connects the tubes and shells which make up the bracelet. j'

An illustrative embodiment of, my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section showing the parts in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the parts in expanded position. Fig.3 is a horizontal longitudinal section showing the parts in normal position. Fig. lis a horizontal section showing the parts in extended position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the outer shell members. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the inner tube members. Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the connecting members. Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the key which cooperates with the connecting member. Fig. .10 is an elevation of the bracelet complete. Fig. 11 is an elevation of one form of catch that may be used for securing the bracelet to-a watch. Fig. 12 is a section taken on the line 12 12 of Fig. 11. Fig. 13 is a horizontal section of the latching device taken on the line 13-13 of Fig. 10.

In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing my invention 20 represents an outer shell and 21 an inner tube, the inwardly bent concave ends 22 of the shell cooperating with the inwardly bent convex ends 23 of the tube to form. a hinged joint, the members ofv which are connected by the member 24 which consists of a bifurcated plate of spring material the end of each arm of which is provided with a recess 25 adapted to engage the said inwardly bent ends of a tube and shell.

A spiral spring 26 surrounds the connecting member 24. and is retained in position by the lateral projections 27 on one end of the connecting member, said projections be ing bent outwardly after said memberhas been inserted through the'spring. The connecting member with its surrounding Spring 1s inserted in the tube through the open end thereof and the lips 28 are then bent in wardly so that they rest against the forward end of the spring. A key 29. having al'ateral head 30 provided with two parallel longitudinal extensions 31is placed in the space between the forward ends of the arms of the connecting member so that it lies in front of the central finger 32 of the latter. The tube with its inclosed connecting member and key is inserted through the open end of a shell. By means of a pin thekey is now raised and the arms of the connecting member pressed together so that one arm 1163 over the finger 32 and the other under the same, thejuxtaposed edges of said arms and finger being rounded to facilitate this operatlon.

The head of the I connecting member may now be drawn out of the forward end of the shell and the inwardly bent ends 23 of a tube inserted in the recesses 25, whereupon the arms of the connecting member will snap over the inwardly bent ends of both tube and shell, and the key 29 will fall back in position so as to maintain the engagement of the connecting member with said ends. I

Secured to each end tube of the bracelet is .a catch consisting of a body portion33 terminating in a hook 34 forengagement with the rings of a wrist watch 35. The tongue 36 which is pivoted in said body portion of the catch preferably has itssides providedwith enlargements 37 arranged to cooperate the similarly shaped depressions in the walls of the catch. so as to hold the tongue in closed position. The outer shell inclosing the end tube to which the catch is secured acts as a safety lock for the catch, as the tongue cannot bennovediintilsaid shell is drawn away fronnthe tongue.

It is desirable to provide watch bracelets with means for opening and closing the same at a point intermediate the ends thereof "which are coupled to the watch so that said perforations 4 2 near one end thereof which register respectively with the perforations 39 in the shell. The latch consists as shown of two arms each provided with a finger piece .4 3 arranged to project through one pair of perforations in saidtube and shell with a lug 44 arranged to project through the other pair .of perforations in the tube and to take into the other pair of perforations in said shell, thereby to latch the said shell and tube'together. Preferably spring-'means are provided for forcing the arms of the latch outwardly, and in the presentinstance Ihave shown said arms secured to or formed integral with a spiral spring 45. As will be obvious when the finger pieces A13 are pressed inwardly the lugs 5.24 :will clear theshell '38 so that the tube may be withdrawn from said shell.

While for-the purpose of more fully disclosing a particular embodiment of my invention I have specifically described the same, it will be understood that various modifications may be made without depart- ;ing from my invention as defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

l. A bracelet comprising in combination a tube and a shell each having its walls at its juxtaposed ends bent inwardly, and a connecting member in said shell, .said member consistingrof a bifurcated plate of spring material, the -end of each arm of Which is provided with a recess adapted to engage the said inwardly bent ends of said tube and shell.

A -bracelet comprising in combination a tube and a shell each having its walls at its juxtaposed ends bent inwardly, a connecting member in said shell, said member consisting of a bifurcated plate of springmuterial, the end of each arm of which is pro vided with a recess adapted to engage the said inwardly bent ends of said tube. and

shell, and a key arranged to fit into the space between the ends of said arms.

5. A bracelet comprising in con'ibination a tube and ashell each having its walls at its juxtaposed ends bent inwardly, a connecting member in said shell, said member consisting ofa bifurcated plate of spring material, the end of each arm of which is provided with a recess adapted to engage the said inwardly bent ends of said tube and shell, and a key arranged to fit into the space between the ends of said arms, said key having a laterally extending head terminating in two parallel longitudinal extensions each lying alongside one of said arms.

6. A bracelet comprising in combination a tube and a shell each having its walls at its juxtaposed ends bent inwardly, a connecting member in said shell, said member consisting of a bifurcated plate of spring material, the end of each arm of which is provided with a recess adapted to engage the said inwardly bent ends of said tube and shell, and having a central finger terminating short of the end thereof, and a key arranged to fit into the space between the ends of said arms and lying forward of the end of said finger.
