WILLIAM H. sWIET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. WIL IA sWIET, OE BROOKLYN, NEW
YORK, ADMINISTRATOR OE SAID WILLIAM I. sWIET, DECEASED, AssIGNoR OF ONE- THIRD To FRANK E. SWIFT, AND TWO-THIRDs To WILLIAM H. SWIFT, BOTH or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed May 4, 1915, Serial No. 25,673. Renewed March 25, 1919. Serial NO. 285,102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in At tachments for Hammers, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates in general to an improved means for fastening a handle to a tool-head and specifically relates to an attachment for fastening a helve to a hammer head, maul or similar device.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a secure and positive connection between the helve and tool head which will eliminate any possibility of the tool-head flying off the helve during use, but which will permit the ready separation of the parts when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment constituting a brace between the helve and tool-head engaging these members at points spaced from their usual joint.
It is a further object of my invention to provide an attachment which can be used in connection with known types of helves and tool-heads without materially modifying the standard types of such articles.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying'my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool-head and helve shown in connection with a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a difierent type of tool-head showing a vertical section, the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. .3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 4.& of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a' perspective view of the boss 13.. V
In the drawings there is illustrated a toolhead, which in Fig. 1, is shown to be a railroad track maul 5 and in Fig. 2 tobe a claw hannner head 6, each provided with the usual small eye 7 into which is inserted a helve 8 as is usual with devices of this character. The rear face of the tool-head is provided with a threaded socket 9 spaced-from, extending parallel to the eye into the toolhead for a material distance and preferably positioned below the eye.
The attachment particularly forming the subject-matter of my invention comprises a bar 10 adapted to be threaded into the tool head and to extend therefrom along the bottom of the helve and a ring yoke 11 for encircling the bar and helve to fasten the yoke to the helve at a point spaced from the eye. The bar has its helve engaging surface 12 slightly concaved to conform to the curvature of the adjacent edge of the helve and has one end Ofl'set to form a screw-threaded boss 13 adapted to be inserted into the threaded socket 9. The bar is provided with an aperture 14 preferably spaced from the threaded end. The eye of the yoke is substantially elliptical in cross-section to fit the helve loosely and is provided with a' flat seat 15 defining itslower portion in Fig. 1, which seat is adapted to rest on the bar adjacent the aperture. The seat is provided with a threaded aperture 16 adapted to be alined with the aperture 1 1. A pin 17 is threaded through. the aperture in the seat, extends through the aperture 14 and is provided with a pointed end 18 extending into a socket 19 in the adjacent side of the helve.
In one modified form of the invention the portion of the yoke Opposite the seat is enlarged to form a cylinder bearing 20 provided with a threaded aperture 21 threaded through which is a pin 22 adapted to extend into a socket 23 in the adjacent side of the helve. The inner side of this hearing may be recessed as shown at 24: to provide access to the threads of the pin 22 thereby to permit the insertion of a tool to distort the threads of the pin to prevent the same from falling out accidentally, but at the same time permit the pin to be withdrawn when it is desired to demount the attachment.
In operation it will be assumed that the tool-head is provided with the threaded socket therein suitably spaced from the eye and that the helve is provided with one or more sockets in the upper and lower edges thereof. The bars may be sold with different lengths and cutoff to size. A bar of the desired length is screwed into the socket as far as-desired and in its final position has the recessed under face in line with and forming a continuation of the upper side of the eye. The helve is then inserted in the eye and the yoke is slid along the helve until it contains the portion .of the bar adjacent the aperture. The upper pin is then inserted into position and the parts screwed together with the pointed end of the screw firmly seated in the socket.
In the modification utilizing the pin on the under side of the yoke this pin is in serted into position with its inner end seated in the socket in thehelve and, if desired, the threads thereof may be distorted to prevent the accidental loosening of the pin from its fastening position.
By means of a device of this character it v is possible to secure the tool-head to the helve without injuring either of these members and it is possible by merely socketing the hammer head or maul now in general use to use this attachment with these old types of tools. As the bar may be sold as long as desired and cut off to size, the attachment may be utilized with tools of diferent types and the bearing along the helve may be made as long as desired. The tendency of the tools to twist on the helve about the eye asan axis isgreatly reduced and the strains on the tools are distributed over a material length of the helve. By spacing thesocket from the eye of the tool-head, the secure and tight fit of thehelve in the eye is maintained free of any inserts therein which might interfere with this tight fit and at the same time constitutes a fixed part of the toolhead increasing its weight without materially aflecting the balance of the tool.
By [placing the attachment on top of the helve, the fastening pin is free of accidental blows should the tool miss the object struck but the heavy yoke constitutes a shield to prevent injury to the woodenhelve or the bar 10 may perform this function when placed on the underside of the helve as shown-in Fig. 1.
While I have shown and described and have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel features 'of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, sub- Copie'sof this patent may be obtained for stitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tool head provided with an eye and a threaded socket formed in the head and spaced from said eye, a helve inserted in said eye and completely filling the same, a onepiece bar including two parts offset from each other, one of said parts constituting a threaded boss adapted to be fitted within said threaded socket by revolving the bar, the other part having a helve engaging portion substantially fitting the upper edge of the helve and extending along the same for some material distance, a yoke separable from the bar and helve encircling said bar and helve the portion of the helve covered by said bar provided with a socket and a pin threaded through the upper part of said yoke and having a smooth portion passing through said bar into said socket in the helve, and adapted to bear on the helve to draw the yoke into engagement with the helve.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a tool head provided with an eye and a threaded socket, spaced from said eye, a helve inserted in said eye and completely filling the same, a one-piece bar including two parts offset from each other, one of said parts constituting a threaded boss fitted within said threaded socket, the other part having a helve engaging portion substantially fitting the upper edge of the helve and extending along the same for some material distance, a yoke separable from the bar and helve encircling said bar and helve a pin threaded through the upper part of said yoke'a-nd having a smooth portion passing through said bar into said helve and a second pin at the underside of the yoke for fastening the same to said helve.
Signed at New York city in the county of and State of New York this 12th day of April, A. D. 1915.
