Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 29, 1919.
Application filed September 9, 1918. Serial No. 253,222.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PAUL Roo- KIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Blow-Torches and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a shield for hand blowpipes or torches used for weldin purposes.
It is usual in devices of this 0 aracter to provide the torch with extra long body or tubes leading to the tip in order that the intense heat from the flame will not seriously aifect the hand of the operator but in heavy Welding operations the metal cannot be laid on neatly and the work is consequently rough in finish. On the other hand where a short torch is employed resort must be had to the wearing of asbestos hand coverings which are very uncomfortable, but without which the operator experiences severe burning of the flesh.
To overcome this it is my aim to provide a simple shield or guard which is made readily attachable to the torch and adequately protects the hand of the operator from the heat, the shield being of a construction consisting of spaced Walls so as to permit of a circulation of air between the same acting to insulate against the passage of heat through the shield body.
For a full understanding of the present invention reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a torch with the shield attached thereon as when in use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, showing more clearly the details of construction; and
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the shield alone.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawing, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the body portion of a torch of conventional construction, having at one end the nipples a and b and at the other end the conduits 03 leading to the nozzle or tip 0. Upon the torch, preferably where the conduits d join the main body,

It Will be observed that the particular feature of this shield is its double wall construction, the spaced walls being designated 5 and 6, respectively, held in spaced relation by spacing means 7. These last mentioned elements may either be integral with the walls as indicated in Fig. 3 or separate rivet elements as indicated at 7 in Fig. 2. The idea is to provide a passage 8 about the shield so that a circulation of air will pass in the direction of the arrows in Fig. 2. In the sleeve or extension 3, the material of the walls is preferably brought together as indicated at 3, 3".
The inner wall of the shield is by this arrangement always maintained cool and protects the operators hand from the efi'ects of the heat which would otherwise cause burning of the flesh. The lower portion of the shield curves rearwardly while the upper portion, relatively shorter, is substantially vertical so as not to interfere with the manipulation of the torch or movements of the hand. The shield may be rotated about the torch and secured in an inverted position whenever the necessity arises from the position assumed by the tip 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a shield for blow-torches or the like comprising a body adapted to be mounted upon the torch and consisting of spaced walls arranged with relation to each other so as to admit passage of the air freely between the walls.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a shield of the class described consisting of a body of metallic or similar material, said body comprising spaced walls and spacing members intervening therebet'ween, the annular periphery of the body being open to admit of free passage of air between said Walls, the material at the central portion of the body being formed into an extension sleeve for purposes of attachment to a blowtorch or the like, and a set screw carried by said sleeve for holding the shield in position.
