To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY R. HUoHEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hereford, in the county of Deaf Smith, State of Texas, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Door-Catches;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and usethe same.
"This invention is an improvement in looks and has particular reference to a door catch. 1
An object of the invention is to provide an improved device for preventing the slamming of doors with consequent injury thereto and also for retaining the same in opened position until released.
Another object is to provide improved means for automatically operating a detent to engage the door upon theopening-thereof.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door being held in opened position by the improved device.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the device showing the interior parts in plan view and in inoperative position.

The device embodied in the present invention is adapted to be secured to a wall or other support at any convenient place and engaged by the door 10 so as to prevent slamming of the door against the wall when opened and also retain said door in opened position.

tached should it be necessary to make repairs to the interior mechanism. The casing is provided with an extension 13 an edge let of which is disposed at right angles to the edge 15 so as to provide a recess for receiving the free vertical edge of the door 10 when the same is opened.
A detent 16 is preferably mounted upon a pivot 17 within the casing and has its long arm 18 projecting into the extension 13 and provided upon its free end with a laterally extending pin 19 upon which is mounted a cushioning sleeve or roller 20 normally recessed within the extension 13 but adapted to be projected through an opening 21 in the edge 11, when the detent 16 is operated, so as to engage the door 10, as shown in Fig. 3. To lock the arm 18 with its roller 20in active position projected from the casing, a spring lever 24: is secured as at 23 to the under side of the extension 13 and has a pin 25 that works in an opening 26 in the bottom of said extension. When the roller 20 is active this pin 25- extends into the casing extension and against the inner longitudinal face of the arm 18, thus preventing move ment of the arm and consequent movement of the roller 20 from position against the door. \Vhen however this spring lever is swung downwardly, the pin 25 is drawn out of the path of movement of the arm 18 and the detent may return to its normal position under the influence of the spring 27 attached to the arm 18 and to a suitable post 28 within the extension 13.
The return movement of the detent is cushioned by means of a rubber or other yieldable block 29 disposed in the path of movement of the free end of the arm 18 so as to be engaged thereby when said arm swings inwardly.
The means for adjusting the detent 16 to its operative position preferably comprises a contact member 30 formed of rubber or other yieldable material and mounted upon a pin 31 to which are connected the levers 32 and 33 projecting into the casing, the lever 32 being pivoted at 34 while the lever 33 is pivoted at 35 to the short arm 36 of the detent 16. When said detent is in its normal position the contact 30 is projected outwardly so that the same will be engaged by the door and forced inwardly by contact therewith so as to adjust the levers 32 and 83 toward alined positions. This adjustment of said levers will swing the detent 16 about its pivot 17 to project the sleeve 20 through the opening 21 and to its operative position against the tension of the sprin 27 which will absorb the shock occasione by the contact of the door with the member 30. It will thus be apparent that a complete opening of the door will be cushioned and that the same will be automatically retained in opened position by the detent 16 until released by the operation of the lever 24.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A door catch comprising a casing, a detent pivoted in said casing and normally recessed therein and having a portion adapted to be projected from said casing and engage a door when the detent is adjusted to operative position, means for releasably retaining said detent in its operative position, means operable from the exterior of the easmg to move the last named means to releasing position,means operated by contact with a door and connected to said detent for adjusting the, same to operative position, and means absorbing the shock of the contact between the door and the last named means and Copies of this patent may be obtained for also returning said detent to normal position when released.
2. A door catch comprising a casing having angularly disposed edges forming a recess to receive a portion of a door, a detent pivotally mounted in said casing and having a portion adapted to be projected from the casing and into engagement with the door when said detent is adjusted to operative position, a contact normally disposed in the recess formed by said angular edges and adapted to be engaged by the door as the sam is swung into said recess, a lever pivoted to said contact and to said casing, a
second lever extending between said contact and one end of said detent whereby the lever is rocked about its pivot when said contact is forced inwardly by the door, a pin for engaging said detent to releasably retain the same in its operativeposition, and
a coil spring connected to said detent for absorbing the shock occasioned by the engagement of the door with said contact and also for returning said detent to its normal position when released. I
