CENTRIFUGAL MACHINE.
asoaosr.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patented apr. ae, raie.
Application filed November 2s, 1917. Serial No. 204.338.
a citizen of the United States, residing at West'Chester, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Centrifugal Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved' means designed more particularly for checking the revolutions of the bowls of centrifugal machines, and it is characterized by the adaptability of a simple construction to simultaneously checking and steadying or maintaining in' correct position a device revoluble at high speedl and liable to eccentric action.
ln the accompanying` drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a centrifugal machine having .my improvements appliedl thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2`2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view. taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
rllhe machine illustrated in the drawings, to show an application of my invention, comprises a frame 1, provided with a .case 2 containing a cylindrical bowl 3 which is `suspended and revoluble by a shaft f1, the
bottom .of the bowl being provided with a boss 5 which revolves and has a limited movement in the bearing 6 connected with"y the case. l
lin accordance with my invention, a pair clamps 7, curved to conform to the periphery of the bowl 3, are mounted t0 oscillate in the case 2 by means of their hinges 8, the latter being journaled on parallel pintles or bearings 9 of a yoke 10 having end loops 11 for engagement by bolts 12 fixed to the case.
Coiled springs 13 are connected to lugs 14 which are fixed to the clamps 7 adjacent to 'the hinges and act to press fibrous linings 7 of suchclamps against the bowl. l
A block 15 is disposed between the clamps 7 between the hinges and the bowl` the block having the bifurcations 15 which guide it by embracing the clamps, and a bolt 16 is fixed to the block and extends, between the hinges, through the case. A collar 17 is xed to the bolt 16 and has trunnions 16 on which are mounted the bifurcations 18 of a cam 18y the latter being operated by an arm 18".
ln operation, when the cam 18 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the bolt 16 and the block 15 are held in an inner position permitting the springs 13 to draw the clamps together into frictional contact with the bowl 3, which, when revolving, is checked not only without throwing it 0H center but while holding it incorrect axial position, avoiding wabbling which commonly takes place. rlhe bowl is released by turning the cam 18 past its angle or dead center position, which draws the bolt 16 and block 15, the' latter spreading the clamps 7 and holding `them out of contact with the bowl 3 against the action of the springs 13. rlhe clamps are adapted to be drawn back. against the case 2, and thereby permit, when in such position, the ready insertion and withdrawal of the bowl 3 without interference therewith.
Having described my invention, ll claim:
1. 'llhe combination with a revoluble suspended bowl, of oscillatoryclamps adapted for engaging the periphery of said bowl near its bottom, and means for holding said clamps alternately in and out of engagement with said bowl.
2. The combination with a case and a bowl revoluble therein, of hinged devices supported by said .case for frictionally engaging said bowl, a bolt adapted to act through said case, means carried by said bolt for dis:- engaging said devices from said bowl, and a cam engaging said bolt and case for operating said means.
3. The combination with a revoluble bowl and means for supporting the same, of a pair of clamps having hinges carried by said means, a spring for drawing said clamps together into engagement with said bowl, a reciprocatory device acting between said bowl and hinges for spreading said clamps, and means comprising a cam for operating said device.
4. 'llhe combination with supporting means and a yoke having bearings fixed thereto, of oscillatory clamps carried by said bearings, a spring for drawing said clamps-together, a block for spreading said clamps, a bolt fixed to said block and eggnding through said supportlng nieansftri a. rocking cam having bifurcations pivotally connected to said bolt and. adapted for holding said bolt in different positions.
5. The combination with a case, 0f a revoluble suspended bowl, oscillatory clamps supported within said case for engaging the periphery of said bowl, means for pressing said clamps against said bowl, and means comprising a lever exterior t0 said case and a cam for disengaging Saidclamps from said bowl.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 15th day of November, 1917 v GERALD D. GROSNER.
