JAMES EDGAR LEE, 0F GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHALLENGE MACHINERY CO., OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
NON -REMOVABLE PRINTER S GALLEY-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James EDGAR LEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N on-ReInovable Printers Galley-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the illvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to printers galley and lock therefor it being the primary object and purpose of the invention to movably connect the lock to the. galley in such manner that the lock cannot be removed from the galley. My invention is directed to the attainment of this end and includes various novel features of structure pertaining both to the galley and to the lock mounted thereon by which the non-removability of the lock is secured by very simple and yet thoroughly effective means.
For an understanding of the invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which a preferred construction embodying my invention is shown and in which;
Figure 1 is a plan View of the combined galley and lock.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Fig. 4; is a perspective view and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lock before its connection to the galley.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the views of the drawing.
The galley is formed of sheet metal, pre erably, and has a bottom 1 and upstanding sides 2 which at one end are extended a distance beyond the end of the bottom and are turned inwardly toward each other hearing against an end 4 turned upwardly from the bottom. Said ears and the end 4: are suitably connected together as by electric welding. The upper portions of the sides 2 extend at right angles from the bottom but adjacent their connection with the bottom, the metal is curved outwardly as shown forming projecting ribs 5 grooved on their inner sides within the galley.
The galley lock is likewise of sheet metal, preferably fashioned into channel shape having a top 6 and depending sides 7. The

length of the sides is substantially the distance between the sides 2 of the galley. At each end adjacent the lower edge thereof each side is formed with a lug 8 to be loosely received within the grooves on the inner sides of ribs 5. The top 6 at one end is extended and curved into substantially U- shape, as indicated at 9, and thence turned downwardly substantially parallel to the end of the lock, lateral extensions 10 being formed to make a Wide bearing engagement between the lock and one of the sides 2 against which said parts 10 are placed.
The lock may be inserted into the galley at the open end thereof and it is apparent that lugs 8 preclude any upward movement of the lock with respect to the galley after it has been placed on the galley. A lug 11 which has been stamped in one side of the galley is then bent inwardly so as to prevent movement of the lock beyond the lug, a side 7 of the lock engaging against the lug as is" evident.
In the upper side of the top 6 of the lock an opening 12 is cut capable of receiving one or more fingers whereby the lock may be moved lengthwise of the galley. This is of value in a non-removable lock of the character described. Previously the locks could be removed from the galley but in the present construction in order to remove any type in the galley it is necessary to move the lock lengthwise of the galley and away from the type. The opening permits this where without such opening movement of the lock would be very hard to obtain.
This construction is simple but by it any accidental disengagement of the look from the galley is insured against. The only way that the lock can be removed is by pressing the lug 11 back substantially into the plane of the side 2 from which it is struck.
While the construction outlined is preferred and has been extensively in practice, it is realized that other constructions may be used to attain the same result, and accordingly, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction described but consider myself entitled to all structures which come within the scope of the appended claims defining the invention.
I claim 1. In combination, a. printers galley comprising a bottom, upwardly extending sides and end, one end being open, an outwardly galley side and frictionally bearing against the outer side thereof to hold the lugs in said groove, substantially as described.
projecting rib in a side of the galley Whereby a longitudinal groove is formed on the inner side of said galley side, a galley lock comprising substantially an inverted chan- A construction containing the elements nel form disposed between the sides of the in combination claimed in claim 1, combined galley, the ends of the flanges of said chan with a lug struck inwardly from said side of nelform; being provided with projecting the galley adjacent the open end of the gallugs to enter said groove, and an inverted U- ley, substantially as described.
shaped extension to the Web of said channel In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature. form turned over the upper edge of said JAMES EDGAR LEE.
