Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, I919.
Application filed December 16, 1918. Serial No. 266,920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN N. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 an inside View of one of the wheels, detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in toys, and particularly to wheel toys commonly known as floor chimes, that is, a toy including bells which will be sounded as the toy is moved back and forth upon thefloor, the object of the invention being a simple and attractive construction, the parts of which are readily formed and assembled, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ two wheels 4 and 5 of any suitable design mounted on a tubular axle 6 on which is a spacing sleeve 7, the ends of the axle pro jecting beyond the ends. of the sleeve and through the hubs 8 and 9 of the wheels and upset on the outer faces of the hubs so as to firmly connect the wheels together. Each wheel is formed on its inner face with a series of inwardly projecting integral fingers 10 equally spaced, and herein shown as corresponding in number to the number of spokes 11. The length of these fingers is nearly half the length of the sleeve 7 so as to form what might be called a cage. Within the cage thus formed are placed sounders 12 and 13 which, as herein shown, are in the form of sleigh bells. The toy is provided with a wire bail 1 1 the ends 15 of which are turned into the axle so that as the toy is drawn forward by the bail the wheels will revolve and the sounders will be agitated by engagement with the finger. These wheels with their fingers are readily formed from cast metal requiring practically no work in finishing and consequently the toy may be produced at a very low cost for manufacture and is exceedingly attractive in appearance.
I claim A toy comprising a pair of wheels, an axle on which they are mounted, said wheels each formed with a series of inwardly projecting integral fingers forming a cage, and sounders inclosed by the cage.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
