ALBERT e. KOPAGKI, or :BAY CITY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 STEVE BUDZINSKI, or B Y CITY, MICHIGAN.
BEDSTEAD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Gr. KorAoKI, a citizen of the United. States of America, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed steads, and particularly to a head raising device, whereby the head of an invalid or other person may be readily elevated to an inclined position on the bed.
The invention consists generally of a pivoted frame which may be readily connected to the general bed stead frame structure and which may be swung upwardly or downwardly on its pivotal connection with the bed stead structure through the instrumentality of cooperating gear connections between the head frame section and the bed stead structure, under the influence of a rotative movement of one of the shafts connected with the gear mechanisms.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating my invention;
Fig. 2 is a. side elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Fig. A isan end View of the mechanism at one side of the bed-stead, the side rail and hinged frame of the latter being in sections.
Referrin now more particularly to the accompanylng drawings, the reference characters A and 5 indicate head and foot portions of the bed stead which are connected in any suitable manner by the side rails 6 and 7, suitable casters 8 being rovided for the support of the bed stead, i desired.
My improved head section of the bed stead is indicated generally by the reference character A and consists of a U-shaped frame 9 connected at its free ends by a rod 10 which is pivotally connected at 11 (see Fig. 2) with the side rails 6 and 7 of the bed stead Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 26, 1917. Serial N 0. 157,443:
structure. The side bars of the U-shaped head section frame A are preferably connected by a plurality of transverse rods 12.
Bolts 13 and 11 carrying screw threads are connected to and depend from the U- shaped frame A and have threaded engagement in spiral gears 15 and 16, respectively. These gears 15 and 16 are mounted in suitable brackets 17 and 18 secured to and depending from the side rails 6 and 7, respectively, of the bed stead structure. The brackets 17 are each composed of a. depending arm and spaced horizontally disposed, vertically alined, approximately U-shaped portions which are also provided with vertically alined opening 17. The opening 17 through which the screws or bolts 13 and 14: pass, permit the said bolts or screws to change their angle with the adjustment of the U-shaped frame ,9.
A transverse shaft 19 is journaled in these brackets 17 and 18 and is provided with spiral gears 20 and 21 designed to interengage or mesh with the aforesaid spiral gears 15 and 16 so that upon rotation of the shaft 19, the threaded bolts 13 and 14: are caused to work upwardly and downwardly in the spiral gears 15 and 16 to elevate or lower the head section frame A on its pivots 11 according to the direction in which the shaft 19 is rotated. To facilitate rotation of the shaft 19, it may be provided with a hand operated wheel 22 secured to one end thereof on the outer side of one of the side sills of the bed stead structure, as clearly shown in the drawings.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable and efficient bed stead head section raising and lowering device.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination bed-stead, includin side rails, a head section pivotally connected to the side rails and arranged to lie in the plane of the same, brackets depending from the side rails and projecting inwardly and provided with openings, spiral gears confined in the brackets and havlng screw threaded apertures, pivoted screws depending from the head section and extending through the openings of the brackets and engaging the threaded apertures of the spiral gears, a transverse shaft extending across the bed-stead and journaled in the said brackets and having operating means at the side of the bed-stead, and spiral gears mounted onthetransverse shaftand 'rneshing with the spiral gears of the screws for moving the same upwardly and downwardly to raise and lower the head section.
2. A bed-stead, including side rails, a head section pivotally connected to the side rails, brackets secured to the side rails and each comprising a depending arm and horizontally disposed approximately U-shaped portions arranged in vertical alinement and provided with vertically alined slots, screws pivoted to the head section and extendin th oug the slot vo th brackets spi e gears mounted the'brackets between the 15 said spaced portions and having threaded ,openings engaging the threads of the screws,
a transverse shaft extending across the bedsteadand journaled in the said brackets, and
spiral gears mounted on the transverse shaft 20 and meshing with the spiral gears of the said brackets.
In testimony whereof I afiig: myrsignature.
ALBERT Gr. gKOPAGKI.
