ATTACHMENT FOR RIBBON-ROLLS.
Rolls, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a means adapted to be attached to a ribbon roll to hold the ribbon and the usual paper strip from accldental unwinding.
The general object of the invention is to provide a ribbon holder possessing certain advantages and characteristics, among which are the following: A member is provided having means to detachably secure it to a face of the usual paper or pastebdard drum of a roll and whereby the attachment may be used on successive rolls; a holding member is provided presenting a shank adapted to lie at the face of the roll and presenting a lateral arm to extend across the roll at the periphery; and resilient means is provided on the attaching member to yieldingly engage the shank of the holding member in a manner that the shank may be adjusted longitudinally to suit the rolls of different diameter and to be adjusted to accord with the gradually reduced diameter of the roll as portions of the ribbon are removed,'and said shank may be turned about the longitudinal axis of the shank through an angle to dispose the lateral clamping arm over the periphery of the roll or away from the roll as desired.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of a roll having my attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section;
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
The usual paper or pasteboard drum of the roll is indicated by the letter A, and the paper strip and ribbon of the roll indicated respectively, by the letters B and C.
My invention includes a suitable attachingmegnber 10preferably in the form of a metal disk on which are laterally disposed spurs 11 to penetrate the drum A at a side face thereof, the spurs advantageously hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing arrowheads 11 The holding member of the attachment includes a shank 12 disposed .at the outer face of the disk 10, the
outer end being bent'laterally to provide a clamp arm 13 adapted to extend across the what the periphery, the terminal 14: of said arm being preferably rounded. The shank 12'is advantageously in the form of a flat metal strip and it is resiliently held in adjusted position by a U-shaped keeper 15in which the shank is slidable to accommodate rolls of different diameter and to adjust the arm 13 radially inward as the size of the roll is reduced by the removal of ribbon portions and the projecting paper strip B. The longitudinal movement of the shank is limited by reducing the same where it extends through the keeper 15, thereby producing shoulders 16 and 17 on the shank at opposite sides of the keeper to engage the latter.
The arms of the U-shaped keeper 15 extend through the disk 10 and coiled about the same is a spring 18 held in position by the outwardly bent inner ends 19 of the keeper. The tension of the spring 18 tends to cause the keeper 15 to yieldingly hold the shank 12 in any adjusted position and the arrangement is such that in addition to the sliding movement of the shank 12 in the keeper, said shank may turn about its own axis through an angle of 180 to swing the holding or clamping arm 13 from a position extending across the periphery of the roll to an outwardly disposed position away. from the roll, so that the ribbon may be unwound either while maintaining the arm 13 across the roll or swung to a side thereof to permit a' more free unwinding of the ribbon. The swinging outward of the clamping member also facilitates the application of the device to the roll which is attached simply by pressing the disk 10 against a face of the drum A, thereby causing the spurs 11 to penetrate said drum.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A ribbon holder including an attaching member having means to secure it to the drum of the roll to lie at a face of the latter, and a holding element comprising a shank having a lateral arm to clamp the roll at the periphery; together with a springmember adapted to be applied to the drum of a ribbon roll at a .face'of said drum and having means to secure said member in position, a holding member comprising a shank having a lateral clamping arm adapted'to overlie the roll at the periphery, a keeper through which said shank extends, and'resillent means acting on said keeper to yieldingly press the latter against the shank; said.
shank being slidable in the keeper to adjust the lateral arm radially on the roll, and' said keeper being yieldable .to a turning,
movement of the shank about its'own axis to swing the lateral arm through an'angle to dispose it "either over a roll at the periphery or away from the roll.
3. A ribbon holder including an attaching member adapted to be applied to the drum of a ribbon roll at a face of said drum, fastening elements projected from said memher and adapted to penetrate the drum for holding the attachment in position, a U- shaped keeper extending through saidmemher, a ribbon holding element comprising a flat shank ;-slidable in said keeper on the outer face 'of the attaching member, said,
