PENCIL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. s, 1919.
Application led March 29, 1918. Serial No. 225,537.
To all tb/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. EASTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented, new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new anduseful improvements 4in pencil holders, and the principal object of the invention is toprovide means for preventing a pencil being broken, and also to render it possible to use short pieces of pencils.
The device is more particularly adapted for use by carpenters and other mechanics, who usually carry their pencils in the pockets oftlieir over-alls. Thus the pencil is liable to be broken, and after the pencil has been used for a certain period it will he so short that difiiculty is experienced in removing it from the pocket, and the usual tendency is to discard the pencil after being about half used up, and replace it by a new one. By my invention the pencil is protected While in the pocket, and the pencil may be used as long as a sufiicient part thereof remains to be gripped by the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several Figs. 3 and 4 show the holder with differ-l ent shaped pencils therein. A.
The holder, indicated in these figures by lthe numeral 1, may be made of any suitable material, Vand of any desired shape to accommodate different forms of pencils. Ad-
jacent the receiving end of the holder the material is slotted as at 2. The slot extends longitudinally and is elongated, vand the Walls thereof are slightly concave, as shown in Fig. 2. Each end of the slot is provided with a round hole 3.- It Will be understood that a pair of these slots are formed in the holder, and are diametrically arranged. After these slots are formed in the holder the end edges of the holder are pressed inwardly to close said slots, so that. the parts of the holder above and below the slots have a spring action so as to grip the pencil when the same is placed in the holder.
lt will thus be seen that the holder Will protect the pencil and by pulling the pencil outwardly from the holder the device can be kept at a suitable length, so as to render it easy to withdraw the pencil from the pocket.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that I may make such changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: I
A pencil holder comprising a tubular member having a pair of diametrically arranged sl'ots an appreciable distance from its open end,.each slot extending longitudinally with the Walls thereof concave to form an opening of oval shape, the parts on cach side of the openings being bent inwardly to close the openings so that the part of the holder on cach side of the slots will have a spring action to grip the'pencil.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
JAMES B. EASTON.
