Be it known that I, THOMAS S. PUKERUD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Controller Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to controller mechanisms such as are employed in connection with electric motors, and it has for its object to provide a device of the character. indicated which may be operated either by a power device or manually, at the will of the operator.
In the operation of controllers that are actuated by pilot motors or other power devices, it is sometimes necessary or desirable to adjust the controllers by manually operable means. This is especially true with reference to controllers that are employed in connection with motors for operating printing presses. The controller constituting the subject-matter of the present invention is particularly adapted to be employed for the purpose above mentioned.
I provide a controller that is adapted to be operated normally by a pilot motor. The motor is operatively connected to the movable member of the controller by gear mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted segmental gear wheel. The gear wheel is provided with a handle by means of which it may be actuated into and out of engagement with a coacting gear wheel in order that the controller may. be actuated manually or by the power device, as desired.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a controller constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view, partially in elevation and partially in section, of the mechanism of Fig. 1, parts being omitted for the sake of clearness.
A base plate 1 of suitable insulating material supports a series of stationary contact members 2. which coact with the stationary contact members 2, are carried by arms 4 which may be, for example, three in number, when employed in connection with three-phase circuits. member 5 that is rotatably mounted on a shaft 6.
A pilot motor 7, which may be, for example, an electric motor, is operatively connected to the member 5 by means of a worm 8, a worm wheel 9, a pinionlO that is secured to the worm wheel 9 and a segmental gear wheel 11. The segmental gear wheel 11 is pivotally connected to the member 5 by means of a rod 12 in such manner that the gear wheel may be moved laterally into and out of engagement with the pinion 10. A spring 13 normally retains the gear wheel 11 in engagement with the pinion 10 to complete the operative connection between the motor and the movable members of the controller. A handle lt is mounted upon the gear wheel 11 for actuation by the operator in order thatthe disengagement of the gear wheel 11 and'the pinion 10 may be effected and that the controller may be ad- 'usted manually while the gear mechanism is disconnected.
In the normal operation of the device, the controller is adjusted by completing the circuit of the motor in such manner as to cause the actuation of the arms l in the desired direction to adjust the resistance in the circuits controlled by the respective arms. In case the circuit of the motor is not opened by the operator, limit switches 15 open the motor circuit when one of the arms 4: has reached the end of its path of travel in either direction. An electromagnetic brake l6 frictionally engages a wheel 17 on the shaft of the pilot motor 7 when the circuit of the latter is open. An auxiliary relay 18 is controlled by a cam 19 that is secured to one of themovable arms 4. The electrical circuits controlled by the various contact members and switch members illustrated in the drawing are neither shown nor described since they constitute no part of the present invention and are not necessary to a clear and definite understanding of the same.
In case it is desired to adjust the controller manually or to change the relation .of the controller to the pilot motor 7, the segmental gear wheel 11 may be actuated downwardly, as viewed in Fig. 2, until it occupies the position indicated by dotted lines. The gear wheel 11 is thus disengaged from the pinion 10, and the arms 4 may be adjusted to any desired position by the manual actuation of the handle 14. I claim as my invention:
1. Ina'controller, the combination with a movable arm and a power device, of a member connected to said arm and movable into and out. of adjustable coin ection to said power device, and a handle connected to said member for manually operating said arm.
2. In a controller,the combination with a movable member and a power device, of
a pivotally mounted element for operatively connecting said device to said movable member, and an operating handle for actuating said element out of operative relation to said device and for actuating said movable member.
3. In a controller, the combinationwith-a movable contact member, a motor and gear mechanism for .oper'atively. connecting said motor to said contact member, of manually operable means for actuating one member of said gear mechanism out of operative relation to said motor and for actuating said contact member.
4. In a controller, the combination With a movable arm, a pivotally mounted gear Wheel connected thereto and a handle on said gear Wheel for actuating it about its pivotal support and for actuating said arm, of a motor and means for operatively c'o'n-. necting the motor to the gear Wheel.
5. In a controller, the combinationv with a movable arm and a motor, of gear mechanism for operatively connecting said motor to said arm, said mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted segmental gear Wheel, a co-acting gear Wheel, a spring for normally maintaining the operative relation otsaid Wheel out of mesh tension by the d1s-,
means, and means handle for actuating said segmental gear With the coacting gear wheel and for actuating .saidarm.
6. The combination with a movable elegearm'e'ch-anism, anda manually operable ment andmeans for-moving it, of a member p'ivotally connected to said movable element and adapted to move intoqand out of operative r connection with said moving for yieldingly maintaining said member in operative connection With said moving means.
7, The combination With a movable ele ment and a power device for actuating it, of means for operatively connecting said device to saidelement oomprising a rotatable member and a member pivotally connected to said element for detachably engaging said member.
8. The combination With a movable element and apower device, of a pair of gear Wheels respectively operatively connected to said element and to said power device, and releasably connected toeach other and manually operable means for actuating one of said gear Wheels out of operative relation to said other gear Wheel, and for actuating said element.
9. The combination With movable means and means for moving it, of means for ad: justably connecting said moving means to said movable means and adapted to actuate said movable means independently ofrsaid moving means.
10. In a controller for electric machinery, the combination with a movable contact member, of a pilot motor, a segmental member permanently connected to said contact member and adapted to be operatively connected to said pilot motor to cause said pilot motor to actuate said contact member, and means for disconnecting said segmental member from said pilot motor and for actuating said contact member independently of said pilot motor.
