Description

APPLICATION EILED JULY I6, 1918.
Patented Apr.
ARTURO DEL GIUDICE, on NEW YORK, Y.
' BINDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
To all cohort it concern: 7
'Be it known that I, ARTURO DEL GIUDIGE, a citizen of the United States, and residing i at New York, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have inventedcertam new and useful Improvements inBindingAttachments for Sewmg-Machmes, of
which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it fappert'ains. to make and use the same.
i This inventionrelates to attachments for sewing machines and particularly to a device of thi's class which is designed for use in binding one or more thicknesses of fabric by a binding strip which is folded by said attachmentfand stitched thereto by the inachine, a'nd'the object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the class and for the purpose specified which is adapted for use in connection with workpiecesor articles of different thicknesses; and a further object being to provide a tensionally controlled attachment which will adjust itself automatically to workpieces of different thicknesses;
and with these andother objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed and operatingas hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom; panying drawing forms a part,in' which the v separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the table of a sewing machine showing my attachment applied thereto and indicating the method of its use;
Fig. 2 a view looking in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a view looking in the direction of the arrow 8 of Fig. 1 but showing my attachment detached from the machine; and,
Fig. -1- a partial section on the line H of Fig. 3 and showing parts in a different position.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have indicated at 10 the table of a sewing machine and secured thereto adjacent to and beneath the needle bar and needle of the machine is a binding attachment 11 comprising a main L-shaped body portion 12 having a base 13 and an upwardly directed portion 14. Secured to the main body portion is a bracket dcvlce 15 provided with an elongated aper- Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Apr. 8, 1919. Application filed. July 16, 1918. Serial No. 245,184. 6
ture 16 through which a screw or other fastening device '17 may be passed for securing said bracket and the main body portion 12 to the table 10 of the machine as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Secured to the upwardly directed portion walls 241, and the front walls 23 of each of said parts are bent outwardly and inwardly as shown at 25 in Figs. 2 and 1 of the drawing to fold the opposite side edges of a binding strip 26 outwardly and inwardly as indicated in Fig. 2 prior to stitching it'onto a -workpiece or workpieces 27 by stitchings 28 as indicated in Fig. 1.
Secured to .the forwardly directed free end portion of the part 20 or the back wall '24 thereof is an upwardly directed plate 29 having an elongated slot 30 through which passes a rivet 81 which is secured to the upwardly directed portion 14: ofthe main body .part. and a finger or keeper 32 is secured to the top portion of the plate 29 and is adapted to support one end of a spring 33, the other end of which is secured to the bracket device 15 as shown at 34 in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing.
By providing the movable part 20 of the binding tape folding device and the tensional means shown and described for normally holding said part in a depressed position, a workpiece or workpieces of diiferent thicknesses may be passed through my attachment and bound in the manner above set out without any adjustment of the attachment by the operator, and it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the transverse width of the binding tape 26 employed, nor to the details of construction position shown in Fig. 1 between the sepa rate parts 19 and 20 of the binder 18 and in the slot or opening 21, and between the separate folded sides of the binding strip 26,
' and said folded strip is stitched by the sewmg machine mechanism as indicated at 28 in Fig. l in the usual manner and by providing the movable part 20 any variation in the thickness of the workpiece 27 will be automatically taken up as will be readily understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A binding attachment for sewing machines, comprising a substantially L-shaped body portion providedwith a bracket attachment for connecting the body portion with the table of a machine, a binding stripfeeding and folding device consisting of two parts ']O1I1Cl at one end, the free end of one-of said parts being slidably engaged with said body portionand movable toward and from the free end'of the other part secured to the body portion, and tensional means for con trolling the movement of said movable part.
2. A binding attachment for sewing machines, comprising a main L-shaped body portion provided with a bracket attachment whereby said body portion may be adjustably connected with the table of a machine, a binding strip feeding and folding device consisting of two parts connected at one end in such manner as to permitof the movement of the other end of one of said parts Gopiesof this patent may be obtained for part being provided with a raised and slotted member through which is passed a headed pin which is secured to the body portion, and a tensional device secured to the vbody portion and to said raised and slotted member for'controlling the movement of the movable part of the binding strip feeding and folding device toward andfrom the stationary part.
3. A binding attachment for sewing machines comprising a main L-shaped body toward and from the corresponding end of the other part, the free end of the movable portion provided with a bracket attachment said first named part, means connected with the free end of the "lastlnamedipa'rt for guiding said part in its movement, and a tensional device secured to said means and to the body portion for controlling the movement of said part toward and fromthe stationary part. 1 I V I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed .my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 13th day of July 1918.
