To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNE E. MCINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Valley and State of .Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Grain- Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for grain binders and it has particular reference to an improved attachment which is adapted to take the place of the binding and knotting mechanisms of the conventional grain binder for the purpose of delivering the heads of grain directly into a receptacle, such as the box of a wagon accompanying the binder, when the grain is too short to be successfully bound into sheaves and when the machine is utilized for the purpose of simply heading the grain.-
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved device which may be conveniently attached to and connected with the frame of a conventional grain binder for the purposes above set forth.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved attachment of the type described including a conveyer, supporting means for the same and means for sustaining the conveyer in adjusted position at various adjustments.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the recise structural details therein exhibited,

Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of a reel for efiecting adjustment of the conveyer.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
A portion of the binder frame indicated at 15 supports the conventional elevator E whereby the out grain is carried from the platform in an upward direction over the bur wheel B. The entire binding mechanlsm has been previously detached to enable a conveyer (J to be placed in position to recelve the material discharged over the elevator E, said conveyer including a frame ortrough 16 which is pivotally mounted on a shaft 17 supported by braces 18, 19 that are connected with the binder frame. The shaft 17 carries a roller 20 and a sprocket wheel 21. At the outer end of the conveyer trough 1s supported a roller 22 and an endless conveyer apron 23 of conventional constructlonis trained over the rollers 20 and 22, motlon being imparted to the conveyer 23 by a chain 24 which is trained over the sprocket wheel 21 and which derives motion from some moving part of the machine. A flexible str1p 25 of canvas or other suitable materlal is connected with the frame of the ele vator E, the free end of said flexible strip being permitted to rest on the conveyer apron 23 so as to guide material from the elevator to said conveyer without possibility of any portion of such material dropping between the elevator and the conveyer.
The frame or trough of the conveyer C may be supported in position at various angular adjustments with respect to the binder frame by means of braces or props 26, one at each side thereof, said props being piv oted at 32 on brackets 83 extending from the frame of the binder. Each brace or prop 26 has a plurality of notches 27 for engagement with a pin or stud 28 on the side of the conveyer O, springs 29 being provided to hold the notched props in engagement with the pins or studs 28. Suitably guided elements 30 are provided for disengaging the notched props from the pins 28 against the tension of the springs 29 for the purpose of enabling adjustment in a downward direction for the free end of the conveyer to be effected.
The trough or frame 16 of the conveyer C is provided at its outer or free end with arms or troughs 34 with which are connected the ends of a flexible element 35. Connected with said flexible element intermediate the ends thereof is one end of a rope 36, the other end of said rope being connected with a reel or drum 37 supported by a frame 38 in convenient proximity to the drivers seat 39 on the binder. Secured on the elevator frame E are upwardly extending convergent arms 40 which are connected together by a brace member 41, said arms serving to support a pulley 42 over which the rope 36 is guided, said rope being thereby sustained in a position. where it can not interfere with the passage of material from the elevator to the conveyer and over the latter. The shaft 43 which carries the drum or reel 37 has a ratchet wheel il which is engaged by a pawl a5 carried by a lever 46 which is pivoted on the shaft 4-3. The frame 38 carries a check pawl 47 engaging the ratchet wheel 44 to prevent reverse rotation of the latter and of the reel. It will be readily seen that by manipulating the lever 46 the reel may be the operation and advantages of this invention Will be readily understood. By first detaching the entire binding mechamsm and next applying the parts of the present invention in the manner herein shown and described, the binder may be utilized for heading grain and for cutting grain that is too short to be bound,the heads or short grain as the case may be being carried by the con veyer to a suitable receptacle such as a wagon box or grain barge. The invention is simple in construction effective in opera tion, and provision is made for all necessary and desirable adjustments. 1
What is claimed, is
An elevator attachment for binders comprising brackets, a shaft journaled therein, a conveyer frame having its end pivoted to said shaft, said shaft being located slightly below the upper end of the elevator or the binder, a reel adjacent the drivers seat, uprights on the upperv end of the elevator, a pulley carried by said uprights, a cable connected with the outer end of the conveyer frame and extending over said pulley to said reel, studs on the sides of the conveyer frame, notched brace bars pivotally mounted to the binder frame, with the notches engaging said studs, springs for holding said notches in engagement with the studs and operating means for disconnecting the braces from the studs from the drivers seat. 7
