THOMAS KEPPEL NORTH, OF WESTMINSTER, LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO VICKEBS LIMITED, OF WESTMINSTER, LONDON, ENGLAND.
DRIVING-BAND OF PROJECTILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Apr.-1,,1919.
Application filed November 22, 1917. Serial No. 203,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS KEPPEL NORTH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway, \Vestminster, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to the Driving-Bands of Projectiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to explosive or incendiary projectiles having metal driving bands connected thereto by screw threads so that the action of the rifling of the gun upon the driving bands holds them firmly in position on the projectiles.
According to the present invention the said screw threads are formed on a base plug which closes the aperture of the cavity containing the explosive or incendiary charge and which, after the loading or charging of the projectile, is screwed tightly in place to hold the driving band firmly in position, the action of the rifling of the gun barrel upon the driving band (which may be made integral with the base plug or separate therefrom and engage with the said screw threads) tending to cause it to be held more firmly in position on the projectile.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into efiect, the same will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a cartridge the projectile of which is provided with a base plug having the driving band made integral therewith, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a projectile in which the driving band is made sep arate from the base plug.
A is the projectile, B is the base plug and C is the driving band.
In the construction shown by Fig. 1 the base plug B is made of copper or other metal suitable for a driving band and the portion C thereof serving as the driving band is made of a diameter exceeding that of the projectile by the required amount. The sense of the screw threads of the base plug B is such that the action of the rifling of the gun barrel upon the driving band portion C when the projectile is fired, tends to screw the plug further into the projectile and hold it more firmly against the base of the projectile.
In Fig. 2 the driving band C is in the form of an internally screw-threaded ring which engages with screw threads on the base plug B and is situated between the base of the projectile and a collar B on the base plug. The ringC is clamped in position by screwing the base plug into the projectile and the base plug is secured by agrub-screw b or otherwise. The sense of the screw threads of the ring C is such that when the projectile is fired the action of the rifling of the gun barrel on the ring tends to hold the latter more firmly against the base of the projectile. The diameter of the collar B on the base plug is no greater than that of the projectile.
It will be observed that in both the constructions shown the aperture of the cavity that contains the explosive or incendiary charge, is made of substantially the same diameter as that of the cavity so that the loading or charging of the projectile can be effected more quickly and easily than is the case with projectiles having a cavity whose aperture is of smaller diameter than that of the cavity.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a projectile having a cavity for a charge, the combination of a base plug which is connected by screw threads to the projectile to close the cavity and has an integral portion thereof constituting a driving band, the sense of the screw threads being such that the action of the rifiing of the gun barrel upon the driving band portion causes the plug to be held more firmly in position on the projectile.
2. In a projectile having a cavity for a charge, the combination of a base plug which is connected by screw threads to the projectile to close the cavity and which has a collar, and a driving band engaging with the same screuv thread on the plug that conupon the driving band causes it to be held nects this plug to theprojectile, said drivmore firmly against said shoulder.
ing band being disposed between said ool- In testimony whereofI hereunto affix my lar and a shoulder on the projectile, and the signature. 5 sense of the screwthreads being such that the action of the rifling of the gun barrel 1 THOMAS KEPPEL NORTH.
