POST-SETTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed October 9 1918. Serial No. 257,538.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. OSTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at White City, in the county of Morris and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Post-Setting Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for use in driving into the ground small and crooked posts, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a device of this character which can be applied easily to the side of a post where it can be struck readily with a sledge or the like, the device being so constructed as to remain tightly fastened to the post while being struck and to increase its grip upon the post in proportion to the force of the blow exerted.
Another object is to provide adevice of this character which is cheap to manufacture and which is durable and efficient.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device applied to a post.
Fig. 2 is a,detail View of the yoke portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the striking wedge.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the holding plate.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the fastening wedge.
different distances from the ends of the yoke. Said yoke is adapted to be placed astride a post P to be driven and a fastening wedge 4 is then inserted transversely of the yoke and into certain of the slots 3. A holding or backing plate 5 is placed between the post and the wedge 4 and has a supporting flange 6 which rests on the wedge 4 as shown. vA driving wedge 7 is lowered be tween the plate 5 and the post and extends from one side to the other of the yoke. This wedge may be formed of wood and has a strip of metal upon its converging faces, as shown at 8 and which strip is adapted to receive wear from contact with the post P and with the plate 5. A striking block 9 is formed on the upper or butt end of the wedge 7 and has a reinforcing band 10 thereon for preventing splitting. It will be obvious that when the parts are assembled as described the block 9 can be struck with a hammer and will thus drive the wedge downwardly so as to bind tightly against the post P. Each time the block 9 is struck the force of the blow will be transmitted through the wedge 7 to the post and the grip upon the post will increase in proportion to the force of the blow struck by the hammer. By placing the slots 3 at different distances from the ends of the yoke the device is made adjustable for use on posts of different sizes.
What is claimed is:
1. A post setting device including a post straddling yoke, a backing member in the yoke and adjustable toward and from an engaged post, a driving wedge insertible into the yoke between the engaged post and the backing member, and a striking block upon the wedge.
2. A post setting device including a post straddling yoke, a fastening wedge extending transversely therethrough, a backing plate, means thereon for engaging the wedge to support the plate between the sides of the yoke, and a driving wedge insertible between said plate and the engaged post.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES HENRY OSTEN.
Witnesses:
