Be it known that I, CHAR1ZEs H. I-IAs- BRoUci, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ma.- chines forl Protecting AChecks and the like, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to machines for protecting 'checks and the like.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby a maximum speed in the operation of the device as a Whole may be attained. i
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby a uniform spacing between the several characters, when transferred upon the face of acheck or the like, may be easily and effectively attained.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby selected indicia may be easily and effectively brought into printing position.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of.. .the above mentioned character a means whereby the selected indicia, when brought into'printing position, may be effectively held in the desired position during the printing operation of vthe same.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the various working elements employed in the devicemay be actuated with the least possib'le amount of friction and noise.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a. device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the check or other document desired to be operated upon may be positively andeectively guided in its course of travel into and through the device when undergoing the vprinting operation thereupon. 4
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable in operation, an inexpensive to manufacture.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of my invention, the numeral 15 indicates a base, av portion of which is depressed as shown at 1'6 to form a guide or passage indicated by the numeral 17, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The under side of the base 15 is provided with a lug 18 to which is secured a sprin member 19 by means of a screw or theike as shown at 20. This springmember isprovided at an appreciable distance from its base 15. The spring member 19 is provided at the end thereof with an opening, as shown, adapted to receive therein the depending end of a screw-threaded shank which is secured to the base 15 as shown. A thumb-wheel 19 is carried by the screw threaded shank and adapted for vertical adjustment thereon and serves as a means for vertically adjusting the platen wheel 22 within the opening 23 through the instrumentality of the spring member 19 as is apparent from the disclosure shown in Fig. 12 of the accompanying drawings.
Upon the base 15 there is disposed a plate 24 which is secured thereto by means of screws or the like as shown at 25 and prov'ided at one longitudinal edge thereof with a vertically disposed wall 26.A This wall is provided substantially centrally therein with an opening 27 through which a shaft 28 is adapted to be passed. This shaft is substantially square in cross section as shown in Fig. 6 and has secured at one end thereof a drum 29. This drum it will be noted isl provided with flanges 30, theintermediate one of which serves to divide the face of the drum4 into two equal portions, 31 and 32, as shown. It will be further noted that the drum 29 is depressed at one side thereof, within which depression there is disposed a tension adjusting means, indicated as a whole by the numeral 33, which comprises a plate 35 journaled upon a lhub 36 ofthe drum 29 and clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 11. Upon one face of the plate 35 there is disposed a pin or lug 37, while upon the other face there is disposed a similar lug 0r pin 38, adapted to project through an opening 39 provided within the drum 29 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. To the lug 37 there-is secured an end 40 of a flexible metallic band 41 which is passed around that portion of the drum 29 indicated by the numeral 31, and through an opening 42 provided therein as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This flexible metallic bandy 41 is adapted to be passed over a pair of guide rollers 43, journaled to the wall 26 as shown at 44. The other end of this metallic belt 41 is passed over that portion of the drum 29 indicated by the numeral 32, and through a slot 45 provided therein as clearly shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the same is secured to the lug or pin 38 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The plate 35 is provided with an arcuateshape slot 46, through which a screw 47 is adapted to be passed and maintained in screw-thread engagement with the drum 29, as clearly shown in Fig. 11. I1; may be readily seen, when considering Fig. 3, that by moving the plate 35 in a clockwise directi0n with respect to the drum 29, the tension of the metallic band 41 ma be increased, and, bynoving the plate 35 1n an anti-clockwise direction with respect to the drum 29, that the tension of `the metallic band 41 may be decreased. When the desired degree of tension has been obtained within the band 41 by adjusting the late 35, as described, the screw 47 may be tightened thereupon, thereby retaining the same in the desired position. A portion of the vertically disposed wall 26 is bent at right angles with respect to the same, as shownat 48, thereby providing supports for a guide rod 49 secured therebetweenl by means of screws or the like as shown at 50. Upon this guide rod there is slidably mounted a sleeve 51 provided at the lower edge thereof with a depending L-shape member 52, carrying therein a setscrew or the like, as shown at 53, adapted to secure the sleeve 51 as a whole, to the metallic band 41 at any desired point thereon. To one face of the sleeve 51 there is secured a handle 54, the outer end of which is provided with a suitable grip 55. This handle is provided with a substantially L-shape pointer 56 adapted to function, as will hereinafter be described in connection with a dial 57 carried by a cover 58 inclosing the various working elements of the device as is readily understood from the accompanying drawings.
Upon the plate 24 there is disposed an I-shape supporting guide 59, the base of which is secured to the plate 24 by means" of screws or the like as shown at 60. The head of this I-shape supporting guide is provided with a pair of parallel grooves 61 and 62, they being divided by a tongue 63 as clearly shown in Figs. 9 and 10. It will be noted that one end of the. tongue 63 is provided with a bevel face as shown at 64. Upon the upper face of the head of the I-shape supporting guide there is disposed a spring 65 which is secured `thereto by means of a screw 66. It will be noted that one end of the spring 65 is bent to a substantial U-shape as shown at 67 while the other end of Ithe spring is bent to a U-shape as shown at 68, the last mentioned U-shaped portion being suostantially larger than that shown at 67. Both of the U-shaped portions 67 and 68 function as a shock absorbing means which will hereinafter be described when eonsidering the operatio-n of the device as a whole. To one face of the supporting guide 59 there is secured a screw 69 about which is coiled a spring member 70, one end. of which engages a lug 7l while the other end is adapted to normally maintain the position shown in Fig. 8. To the plate 24 there is secured an upright supporting member 72, carrying one end of a guide rod 73, the other end of which is secured by a screw to the vertically disposed \vall 26 as shown at 74. Mount-ed upon and carried by the guide rod 73 is a transversely movable frame 76, having side members 77 and 78 through which the shaft 28 is adapted to pass between the side members 77 and 78. Upon the shaft 28 there is slidably mounted a journal bearing 79, the interior of which is substantially square in cross'section as best shown in Fig. 11. Fixedly carried by the journal bearing 79 is a prmting wheel indicated as a Whole by the numeral 80, which comprises a hub 81, carryingat one end thereof a web 82, the periphery of which is provided with a plurality of spaced printing blocks 83, provided with raised faces, as shown at 84, upon which are formed suitable printing characters as clearly shown in Fig. 13. In order to prevent the printing wheel 80 from rotating upon the journal bearing 79 there is provided a set-screw 84 passed through `the hub 81 and adapted to engage the journal bearing 79 as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. It will be noted that the lower portion of this printing wheel is adapted to eX- tend through an opening 81 provided within the plate 24 in order to permit the printing blocks 83 to normally engage lthe platen wheel 22, which engagement is clearly illustrated in Fig. 6.
To the outer face of the side members 77 there is secured an L-shape supporting member 85, the upper end 86 of which carries a substantially arcuate-shape, preferably resilient, roller supporting member 87 which is held in engagement with the upper end of the L-sha'pe supporting member by means of a screw or the like as shown at 88. E/ach end of this roller supporting member is provided with a substantially U-shape frame 89 having j ournaled therein an inking roller 90.
To one end of the frame 76 there is secured a supporting pin 91 the outer end of which is adapted to reciprocate within the grooves 61 and 62 as will be apparent when considering the hereinafter described operation of the device as a whole.
In order toretain the frame 76 normally in the position shown in Figs. 1, 7 and 11 there is provided a coil spring `92, one end of which is secured to an arm 93 carried by the side member 77 of the frame 76, while the other end is secured to an eyelet 94 carried by the vertically disposed wall 26.
Upon one end of the plate 24 there is disposed an L-shape bracket 95 which is secured thereto by means of screws or the like as shown. To this bracket there is secured a bell crank lever 97, one 'arm of which is provided with an elongated slot 98 while the other arm is provided with a similar elongated slot 99. An operating handle 100 is pivotally secured to the bracket 95 as shown at 101. This arm is provided with a pin 102, adapted to be passed through and reciprocate within the slot 98. A' pin 103 is carried by one end of the frame 96 and is adapted for reciprocatory movement within the slot 99.
A vertical support 104 is secured to the metal plate 24 and provided with. a horizontally extending pin 105 which is adapted lto enter the openings formed between the printing blocks 84 when the printing wheel 80 is moved to the position clearly shown in Fig. 12. .It will be noted that each of the printing blocks 83 is provided with bevel faces 106 which serve as means for guiding the pin 105 into the openings between the blocks 83 should the openings, accidentally or otherwise, be moved out of perfect alinement with the pin. when the printing wheel 80 is being moved in the direction indicated by the arrow shown in Fig. 12.
To the outer face of the vertically disposed wall 26 there is pivotally connected an arm 107 by means of a screw or the like as shown at 108. Through the lower end of this arm4 there is passed an adjustable rod 109 adapted to be maintained at a desired position by means of a set-screw 110. One end of the rod 109 is provided with a rotatable spur wheel 111 adapted to engage and guide a check or other document indicated by the numeral 112 in its course of travel through the device as shown in Fig. 12. In order to maintain engagement of the spur wheel 111vwith the check or other document 112 there is provided. a coil spring 113 one end of which is secured to the rod 109 .as shown in Fig. 3. It might be well for me toistate here that the spur wheel 111 may be axially disposed at right angles to the.
course of travel of the check 112, or set at a sufficient angle to create a tendency to thrust the check toward a guide fiange 113, carried by a table 114 slidably mounted upon a rod 115, supported by brackets 116 which are secured to the base 15 as shown in Fig. 7. This table is provided with a pair of ears 117 through which lthe rod 115 is passed, one of these ears being bent to a substantial U-shape as shown at 118- A guide 119 is disposed within the guide or passage 17 and is provided with a depending partition 120 which is mounted upon the rod 115 and .carried between the side arms of the U-shape portion 118.
In use, the operation of the device is as follows: Should it be desired to print a check or other document the handle 54, passed through an elongated slot 58 prolvided within the cover 58, is moved longitudinally to bring the pointer 56 opposite a desired character carried by the dial 57, whereupon the printing wheel 80 is moved, rotatably through the instrumentality of the belt 41, to such a position as will brlng into printing position a printing character corresponding to the character opposite the pointer 56. The check or other doument is then inserted into the passage 17 allowing one edge to contact with the guide 119, carried therein, and the iiange 113 carried by the table 114. The table 114 together with the guide 119 is then moved upon the rod 115 to such `a position as will bring that portion of the check upon which the characters are desired to be printed directly over the platen wheel The lever 100 is then -moved downwardly through an elongated slot 10,0 provided within the cover 58, thereby moving the frame 7G through the instrumentality of the bell crank lever 97, in the direction indicated by the arrow of Fig. 12, whereupon the pin 105 will enter one of the openings provided between a pair of printing blocks 83, as shown in Fig. 12, in order to prevent the printing wheel 8O from revolving during its longitudinal movement upon the shaft 28. When the printing wheel 80 has been moved a sufficient distance, the raised portion 84 'of the printing block 83 is brought into engagement with the check or other document placed upon the platen wheel 22 as hereinbefore described. By continuing the movement of the printing Wheel 80 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 12 the supporting pin 90 is brought out of engagement with the slot 62 and under the influence of the spring is elevated to the position shown in Fig. 9, striking upon the lU-shape portion of the spring 65, as4
shown at 67, which U-shape portion is `designed to absorb the shock and dampen the noise which would otherwise be created by the striking of the supporting pin when being elevated as described. Due to the fact that the supporting pin 91 is elevated as hereinbefore described the frame 76 carrying the printing wheel 80 is necessarily swung upwardly upon the guide rod 7 8 thereby releasing the printing block 83 from the 'face of the document or check. The frame 76 is moved under the influence of the spring 92 to the position shown in Figs. 7 and 11, allowing the check or other document to be freely removed from within the device should it be so desired. It might be well for me to state here that immediately upon the return of the frame 76 to its normal position the supporting pin 91 passes out of the slot 61 through whichjt travels when being moved to its normal position as before described and drops under the weight of the frame 76 to the position shown in Fig. 8, striking upon the U-shape portion of the spring 65 indicated at 68, which U-shape portion absorbs any shock or noise, due to the sudden drop, which would otherwise'be created. In order to counteract the tendency of the shaft 28 to move in the direction of travel of the printing wheel when it is' returning to its normal position there is provided a wear washer 28 which is secured to the inner face of a side of the cover 58 by any suitable means and adapted to normally engage the end 29 of the shaft 28 as clearly shown in Figs. 11 and 12. Should it be desired to print another character upon the check before. the same is removed'from with in the device the same operation as hereinbefore described is repeated. y
The spacing of the printed words or characters is a highly important factor in a machine of the character described and is accomplished. for example, in the following manner. Since the check or work 112 is fed into the machine by the contact of the printing wheel 8O with the cooperating platen wheel 22 the length of travel of the check for a single printing operation depends upon the point on the platen wheel at which the printing wheel comes into contact therewith. Should the plat-en wheel 22 be, vlowered with respect to the printing wheel 80 by means of the thumb screw 19, the printing wheel would contact with the platen wheel nearer the top thereof, therefore the space between the characters or words printed would be diminished. ()n the other hand, should'the platen wheel 22 be raised with respect to the printing wheel 80 the space between the characters printed would be increased.
It is to be understood that various changes in the shape. size and arrangement of parts ma)v be resorted to without departing from the spirit of in v invention or the scope ofthe subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters latent of the United States, is:
1. In a device of the character described, a base, a pivoted vand transversely movable frame mounted thereon, a type wheel mounted in a frame. a platen wheel mounted on the base, means for bringing the character of the tvpe wheels selectively into alinement with the platen. and means for shifting the type wheel across the platen.
2. In a device ot the character described, a base, a pivoted and transversely movable frame mounted thereon. a type wheel mounted inthe frame. a platen to Acoperate with the type wheel. means for bringing the characters of the type wheel selectively in alinement with the platen and shift-ing the t'vpe wheel across the platen, means raising the type wheel after the printing operation. and means for returning the type wheel to its normal position.
3. ln a device of the character described, a base, a supporting member mounted thereon. a frame pivoted and transversely movable thereon. a type wheel mounted in the frame, a platen cooperating with the type wheel, means for bringing the characters of the type wheel selectively in alinement to cooperate with the platen, means for shifting the type wheel to bring'its characters into engagement with the platen. and. a spring urging the frame to its normal position.

7. I'n a device of the character described a shaft, a printing wheel slidably mounted thereon., a platen wheel, a .drum secured to the shaft, a plurality of guide rollers, a belt passed over the rollers and having its ends secured to the drum, means for varying the tension of the belt, and means for moving the printing wheel into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel.
8. In a device of the character described a shaft; a printing wheel slidably mounted thereon; a platen wheel; a drum secured to the shaft; a plurality'of guide rollers; a belt passed over the rollers and having its ends secured to the drum; means for varying the tension of the belt,.said means comrlsin a movable plate provided with a P plurality of :pins having the ends of said belt attached thereto and a screw for retaining the vplate in a desired position; and means for moving the printing wheel into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel. n

In a device of the character described, a horizontally movable frame, a shaft extending therethrough, a journal bearing slidably mounted upon the shaft and journaled Within the frame, a printing wheel secured to the bearing, a platen wheel, manually operable means for horizontally moving the frame together withthe printing wheelv whereby the periphery of the printing wheel is brought into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel, a drum secured to the shaft, a plurality of guide rollers, a metallic belt assed over the guide rollers and having its ends attached tothe drum, and a spring for returning the printing wheel to a normal position.
11. In a. device of the character described, a base, a pivoted and transversely movable frame mounted thereon, a type wheel mounted in the frame, a platen wheel, means for bringing the characters of the type wheel selectively into alinement with the platen wheel, means for moving the printing Wheel into engagement with and over the face of said platen wheel, and means for lifting the printing'wlieel out of engagement with the platen wheel subsequent to the engagement therebetween.
12. In a device of the character described, a guide rod, a horizontally movable frame mounted upon the rod, a shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel slidably mounted upon the shaft, manually operable means for moving the frame in one direction, a sprin for moving the frame in the opposite direction, a supporting guidel having a pair of horizontal grooves provided therein, and a supporting pin carried by the frame and adapted to traverse one of said grooves when theframe is moved in one direction and the other of said grooves when the frame is moved in the opposite direction.
13. In a device of the character described,
position, means for lifting the printingl wheel out of engagement with the platen wheel subsequent to its passing thereover, and means for retaining the printing wheel out of engagement with the platen wheel during the return movement of the printing wheel to a normal position.
14. In a device of the character described,
-a horizontally movable printing wheel;
manually opera-ble means for moving the printing wheel into engagement with and over the face; of the platen wheel whereby the work is fed between the printing wheel and platen wheel, means for frictionally engaging the work in its course of travel, the last mentioned means comprising a rod having a spur wheel rotatably mounted thereupon; an adjustable table to support the Work when being fed; and a guide for guiding the work during its passage between the printingwheel and platen wheel.
15. In a'device of the character described, a base, a pivoted and transversely movable frame mounted thereon, a type wheel mounted in the frame, said type wheel being provided with printing blocks, a platen wheel, means for moving the printing blocks successively into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel whereby work may be fed between the platen wheel and the printing wheel to receive thereupon the imprint of printing character carried by selected printing blocks, means for varying the space between the imprint of one set of characters carried by one printing block and thel second set of characters carried by the second printing block, and means for lifting the printing wheel from the platen wheel subsequent to its engagement therewith.
16. In a device of the character described, a platen wheel, a guide rod, a horizontally movable frame mounted upon the rod, a shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel mounted upon the shaft, manually operable means for moving the frame together with the printing wheel in one direction with respect to said shaft whereby said printing wheel is moved into engagement with and over the face of the platen Wheel, means for returning the' frame together with the printing wheel to a normal position. means for lifting the printing wheel out of engagement with the platen Wheel subsequent to the engagement therebetween.
17. In a device of the character described, a platen wheel; a guide rod, a horizontally movable frame mounted upon the rod, a
shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel mounted upon the shaft, manually operable means'for moving the frame together with the printing wheel in one direction with respect to said shaft whereby said printing wheel is moved into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel, means for retaining the printing wheel in engagement with the platen wheel during the passage of the print-ing wheel thereover, and means for lifting the printing wheel out of engagement with the platen wheel subsequent to its passage thereover.
18. 'In a. device of the character described, a. platen wheel, a guide rod, a horizontally movable .frame mounted upon the rod, a shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel mounted upon the shaft, manually operable means for moving the frame together with the printing wheel in one direction lwith respect to said shaft whereby said printing wheel is moved into engagement with and over the face of the platen wheel, means for retaining the printing wheel in engagement with the platen wheel during the passage of the printing wheel thereover, means for lifting the printing wheel out of engagement with the platen -wheel subsequent to its passage thereover, and mea-ns for retaining the printing wheel disengaged from the platen wheel subsequent to the passage of the printing wheel over the platen wheel.
19. In a device of the character described, a platen wheel, a guide rod, a horizontally movable frame mounted upon the rod, a shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel mounted upon the shaft, manually operable means for moving the frame together with the printing wheel in one direction with Arespect to saidshaft whereby said printing wheel is moved into engagement with and over the face of "the platen wheel, means for retaining the printing wheel in engagement with the platen wheel during the passage of the printing wheel thereover, mea-ns for lifting the printing wheel out of engagement with the platen wheel subsequent to its passage thereover, means for retaining the printing wheel disengaged from the platen wheel subsequent to the passage of the printing wheel over the platen wheel, and means for retaining the printing wheel out of enga-gement with the platen Wheel during the return movement of the printing wheel to a normal position.
20. In a device of the character described, a guide rod, a horizontally movable frame mounted upon theY rod, a shaft extending through the frame, a printing wheel slidably mounted upon the shaft, manually operable -means for moving the frame in one direction, a spring for moving the frame in the opposite direction, a supporting guide havingv a pair of horizontal grooves provided ios therein, and a supporting pin carried by the frame Aand adapted to traverse one of said grooves When the frame is moved in one di-.

In a device of the character described, a rotatable and horizontally movable printing Wheel provided with a pluralityy of spaced printing yblocks carrying printing characters thereon, means for bringing the characters selectively into printing position, a platen Wheel arranged in proximity to the printing wheel, means for horizontally moving the printing blocks successively into engagement With and over the face of the platen wheel whereby Work may be fed between the platen wheel and the. printing wheel and imprint thereupon printing characters carried by selected printing blocks, means for automatically spacing the inlprint of a set of characters carried by one printing block from the print of a succeedin set of characters carried by a second prlnting block, means for preventing rotation of the printing wheel during the horizontal movement of the same, and means for lifting the printing Wheel from the platen Wheel subsequent to its engagement with the platen Wheel.
