IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR PASTING LABELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,606, dated July 16, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. 1. SLocUM, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pasting Labels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand,'make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in Which Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the device illustrating my invention. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view.

My invention consists in certain improvements in label-pasters, hereinafter more fully set forth.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a cylinder. or casing to be filled with or receive the labels, which cylinder is suspended from a sliding head or frame, B, by means of rods 0 secured to the cylinder. The cylinder is open at top and bottom, but at the bottom is provided with small ledges D, which project inwardly, and are arranged at intervals so as to support the labels and prevent their unintentional removal therefrom at the bottom. E represents a head, which is adapted to bear against the labels at the top thereof, and has secured to it a stem, F, around which is coiled a suitable spring, G, which lays on the head E, and is adapted to be compressed by the head or frame B sliding on the rods 0 and stem F. On the face of the cylinderI arrange a series of lifters, J, which extend vertically and slide in eyes a, a secured to the cylinder. The lower ends of the lifters are hookshaped, as at b b, and enter openings in the cylinder near its lower end. The lifters are bent, curved, or otherwise constructed at or about the centers to form bearings K, which are adapted to ride over deflectors L, which consist of projections 0r ribs extending at right angles with the line of the lifters, so that if the latter are depressed their lower ends will be caused to move outwardly in the openings of the cylinder. Above the guides or eyes a there are secured projections or ribs N, against which bear, when the lifters are at their highest points, the upper ends thereof, so that the lower ends will be pressed into the openings in the cylinder. In order to properly operate the lifters the eyes a should be sufficiently large to permit play of the lifters during their inward and outward motions, yet retain them in position. Lateral displacement of the lifters is prevented by means of guides P projecting from the cylinder and surrounding the hooked ends. Springs N are attached to the cylinder and lifters to cause the latter toassume their normal or elevated positions. Q represents guides, which are in the form of flaring feet, and secured at or about the bottom of the cylinder A, so as to extend below the edge thereof. In the present case the guides P and Q may be made in one piece of bent wire, but they may be made separately or disconnected.

The operation is as follows: A series of pasters may be employed at one operation, and each cylinder will be filled or-partly filled with labels, and the head E laid thereon, the lower ends of the lifters entering between the labels near the bottom of the cylinder, and retained there by means of the ribs N, as shown in Fig. 3. The boxes, lids, or other articles to which the labels are to be affixed are properly pasted or gummed, and arranged on a tray, table, or board in. relation to the cylinders, and then moved or introduced under the latter The head B is now lowered by means of levers, cams, screws, or otherwise, so that the bottom of the cylinders will rest on the upper face of the articles to receive the labels, the flaring guides Q directing the cylinders in place, so that there is no displacement or fracture of parts or articles, and the head is still further depressed so as to press against the springs G and force the head E against the labels, which will become compact masses in the cylinders, and will not discharge at the bottom, owing to the ledges D, whereby, were the cylinders elevated, the sudden expansion of the labels would carry up the lowermost label of each cylinder, the cohesion between the labels being great, and thereby prevent the attachment of said lower label to the destined object; but now the lifters J perform an important part. lower or hooked ends of the lifters are forced partly from the labels by the labels themselves, but retaining a hold thereon, thus permitting the compactness of the labels which is necessary for properly pasting or affixing the same. After the labels have been well pressed on the boxes or articles by the sliding head, as stated, the latter is permitted to rise and thereby elevate the cylinders. This relieves the lifters from pressure, and their outward positions, and by means of the springs N, causes them to rise, thus elevating in the cylinder all the labels above the hooked ends I) b, and leaving but a few labels between said ends and the ledges D. The hooked ends are now forced inwardly by means of the ribs N, and, owing to the springs N, keep the upper labels from pressing on the lower ones. The lowermost label of each cylinder, being in contact with the pasted surfaces of the objects to receive the labels, will adhere thereto, and, by the raising of the cylinders, asstated, will be released from the latter, thereby remaining affixed in place.

The labeled articles are then As the head descends the removed and another supply introduced, the subsequent operation being the same as has been set forth.

Having thus described my invention, what ,I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The sliding head B moving on the stem F of head E, and bearing against the spring G of said head E, in combination with the lavbel-receiver A, as set forth.
