To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States,.and a resident of Northville, county of Fulton, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical .Movements for Weaving-W'Iaehines, of which the following is a specification. L 7
My invention relates to weaving machines, and is particularly addressed to providing a difierential motion so as to move the guide bars when, during the operation of the machine, such movement is necessary.
In the operation of weaving machines, it
is necessary thatthe movement of the guide bars be very'rapid, and for this purpose, ,I
have provided a differential movement which is simpler, more positive and less liable to breakage than movements heretofore use in this class of machines.
In the drawings, I have for simplicity shown only that part'of a weaving machine to which my invention relates. I

In the drawings, 1 is the frame or support of a weaving machine. 2 is a shaft which I will call the power-shaft, it being driven from any suitable source of power. Upon one end of this shaft is fixedly secured a disk 3 by set screws 4. 5 is a shaft to be driven with a variable motion. This shaft 5 is mounted in bearings 6 in the frame 1 and is, as will be noticed, parallel to shaft 2, but offset from the center thereof. 7 is an arm integral with the shaft 5, but ofi'set therefrom, in which is mounted a bolt or pivot 8. g
In the disk 3 is a bolt or pivot 9. 10 is a link loosely mounted on pivots or bolts 8 and 9. As shaft 2 rotates, the disk 3 fastened thereto, rotates with it and through bolt or 1 pivot 9, link 10 and bolt or pivot 8, rotary motion is transmitted to the shaft 2 and owing to the shaft 5 being offset from shaft 2, a differential rotary motion is thereby imparted to shaft 5, as is shown in diagram 3. In this diagram the small letters represent the bolt or pivot 9 in the disk 3, and the capital letters represent the bolt or pivot 8 in the offset 7 of the shaft 5. It

will be noted that while the pivot9 in the disk 3 on power shaft 2 is rotating from the point a to the point I),- the pivot 8 in the arm 7 of shaft 5 rotates from A to B. While'the pivot 9 in the disk 3 on shaft 2 rotates from the point 6 to thepoint c, the pivot 8 in the arm 7 of shaft 5 rotates from the point B to the point C. While the pivot 9 in the disk 3 on shaft 2 rotates from the point 0 tothe point cl,the shaft 5 rotatesfrom the point C to thepoint D, which, it willbe noted, is a much shorter distance than from the preceding point B to (3. pivot 9 in the disk 3 on shaft, 2 rotates from regular, transmits the differential motion to the shaft 5 by means of the link 10. Keyed or otherwise'secured to the shaft 5 is a wormgear 11 which meshes with gear 12 secured to shaft 13, so that the difierential rotary motion of shaft 5 is imparted to shaft 13 by worm 11 which meshes with gear-wheel 12. Fixedly secured to shaft 13 are index or stud-wheels 14B and 15, which, have mounted in their peripheries the movable studs 18 adapted to be moved and held in any desired position by the bolts 19. The position of these studs, which varies the configuration of the periphery of the stud- wheels 14, 15, determines when the guide bar is to be moved, the motion of the guide bar being caused by the roller 20 passing from one elevation to another of the studs 18.

The arrangement of the difierential' mos tion imparted by my invention is such thatthe passing of the roller 20 from one elevation to another of the studs is so arranged that it takes place when the rotation of shaft 13 is most rapid, it being necessarythat the movement of the guide bars be as rapid as possible.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a weaving machine, the differential motion may, of course, be used wherever desirable and in any apparatus where a differential motion is necessary.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is: 7
1 In a mechanical movement for weaving machines, means for moving the guidebars, consisting of a rocking lever, a powershaft, a driven-shaft, offset from the said power-shaft, an arm fixed to said driven:- shaft,means connecting said arm and said power-shaft and means for transforming the variable rotary motion ofsaid driven-shaft was to operate said-lever.
