COMBINED PUMP-SPOUT AND DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 25, 1919.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Sulphur Springs, in the county of Meagher and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pump-spouts and Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the discharge spouts of pumps, and has for one of its objects to provide a sanitary drinking fountain attachment to devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sanitary drinking fountain attachment to a pump spout so arranged that it does not interfere with the ordinary uses of the spout.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- I Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the improved device,

The .improved device may be applied without material structural change to pumps of various forms, and it is not de sired to limit the invention in any manner in this respect. For the purpose ofillustration the improved spout is shown applied to a conventional pump in which 10 represents a portion of the cylinder or body of the pump. The pump cylinder is formed with a spout receiving base 12, and the improved spout is provided with an attaching flange detachably secured to the base by bolts or other fastening devices 13, thus replacing the ordinary spout.
The improved spout comprises a tubular body 14 having a downwardly directed discharge 15 and provided with a cut-off valve represented as a whole at 16. The body 14 is provided with a threaded boss 17 which supports a vertical conductor tube 18. Attached to the tube 18 is a receiver or reservoir 19, preferably globular in shape, there being a pipe section 20 threaded on the upper end of the conductor 18 with its terminal spaced from the upper end of the reservoir, as shown. The reservoir is provided with a closure cap 21 to render the interior of the reservoir accessible for cleansing, and likewise to permit the parts to be coupled.
The reservoir may be coupled to the conductor 18 in any suitable manner and for the purpose of illustration two coupling means are shown.
Leading from the reservoir 19 near its lower portion and preferably at one side, is a relatively small discharge tube 22. upturned near its free end as shown at 23 and provided with a relatively small discharge nozzle or mouth-piece represented as a whole at 24. The discharge 24 will be located a sufficient distance above the handle of the valve 16 so that it does not interfere with the operation of the same. The pipe 22 is provided with a suitable drain 25 to permit the discharge of water from said pipe andthus prevent freezing.
The presence of the drinking fountain attachment does not interfere with the ordinary uses of the spout 14, through which the water is free to pass when the valve 16 is opened. When the fountain is to be used the valve 16 is closed and the water forced through the tube 18 by the operation of the pump to supply the reservoir, and from thence flows to the mouthpiece 24 in the usual manner. If the improved device is applied to a force pump, and the water supply in the air chamber is suflicient, the reservoir 19 will be filled therefrom. If the improved device is applied to an ordinary pump, the operator closes the valve 16 and operates the pump handle a few strokes to cause a supply of water to be conducted to the reservoir to supply the drinking fountain.
If the water in the reservoir is not entirely consumed, the surplus water automatically drains back through suitable openings 19 into the tube 18, thus preventing the accumulation of water in the reservoir and avoiding freezing in cold weather.
It will be noted by this arrangement that the main spout 14 is available at all times for use in connection withthe pump and the only requisite required to change the device into a drinking fountain is to close the cutoff valve 16 and operate the handle of, the pump a few strokes.
The improved device is entirely sanitary and the drinker is protected from contamination.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and adapted to pumps of various sizes and forms without structural change in the pump except to discard the ordinary spout and apply the improved spout with the same fastening devices used for securing the ordinary spout.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination with a discharge spout having a cut-off valve, of a reservoir having a closure, a conductor having one end thereof communicating with the discharge spout at a point between the valve and the source of supply and its other end extended within the reservoir to a point beneath the closure thereof, a mouth-piece and a downwardly inclined conductor forming a connection between the reservoiriand mouth-piece.
2. The combination with a pump cylinder, of a discharge spout having a cut-01f valve and 'ovided with an attaching flange detachzib reservoir, a conductor communicating with and extending above the discharge spout be-' tween the cut-off valve and the source of supply and extending within the reservoir to a point near the top thereof and provided with drain open ngs, a mouth-piece and a conductor leading from the reservoir near the drain openings and communicating with said mouth-piece.
3. The combination with a discharge spout having a cut-off valve, of a reservoir hav ing a closure, a conductor communicating with the discharge spout at a point between the valve and the source of supply and connected with the reservoir, a pipe connected With the conductor and extending within the reservoir to a point near the closure thereof, said pipe being provided with drain ly secured to the pump cylinder, a
openings, a mouth-piece, a downwardly inclined conductor forming a connection between the reservoir and mouth-piece, and a drain formed in the last-mentioned conductor at a point beneath the mouth-piece.
4. The combination with a discharge spout having a cut-off valve, of a conductor communicating with the discharge spout between the cut-off valve and the source of supply, a reservoir having a threaded opening in the bottom thereof and provided with a detachable closure, a conductor communicating with the discharge spout'between the valve and the source of supply and having its upper end threaded in the opening in the reservoir and provided with an annular shoulder bearing against the bottom of the reservoir, a pipe connected with the threaded end of the conductor and extending to a point near the closure of the reservoir, said pipe being provided with drain openings,'a mouth-piece and a downwardly 'in-' clined conductor forming a source of communication between the bottom of the resere voir and said mouth-piece, t

The combination with a discharge spout having a cut-off valve and provlded with an upstanding internally threaded nippl disposed between the cut-off and the source of supply, an upstanding conductor threaded in said nipple and supported by said spout, a reservoir mounted on and supported by the conductor, a pipe'connected withthe conductor and extending within the reservoir to a point near the top thereof,va mouth-piece, a conductor forming a source of communication betweenthe lower portion of the reservoir and the mouth-piece, and a drain located inthe lastrmentioned conductor at a point below said mouth-piece.
