Description

UNIED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WALTER CALHOUN AND JOHN cannons, or WEsT TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN S ASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,527, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER CALHOUN and J GEN GIBBONS, of West Troy, in the county of Albany and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fastenings and Supports; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sash-fastening, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which ourinvention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is an interior view, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section, of our sash-fastenmg.
A represents a metallic box open on the inside und at the front edge, and provided with ears or flanges a a at its ends for screws to pass through for the purpose of attaching the box to the sash. From the outside of the box A projects a short tube or collar, b,through which passes a shaft, d, having upon its outer end a crank, B; and immediately inside of the box on said shalt is a collar, (2, cut square on one side, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.7 This collar 6 is located within a slot or mortise in a plunger, 0, which is placed in the box A, and held in the same by a disk, f, on the inner end of the shaft d. In the outer face of the plunger G is inserted a piece, h, of leather or other suitable material, and in the ends are shoulders i, as shown, between which and the rear Wall of the box are placed springs 70 k, which throw the plunger outward when the crank is turned, sothat the square side of the collar 0 is against the inner side of the mortise in the plunger. WVhen the crank is turned in either direction the coller e draws the plunger inward. The leather h or other material inserted in the plunger will not injure the wood, but creates friction against the window-frame, thereby holding the sash at any desired height. When the sash is down the plunger may enter a recess in the frame and thus lock it.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the box A with tube 1),
shaft d with crank B, collar 6, and disk f. the
mortised plunger 0 With leather h, shoulders t 'l, and springs It k, all constructed and arranged as described, so that the springs will throw the
