L I SATES COMBINATION CIGAR-CUTTER AND MATCH-SERVER.
Application filed April 9, 1918.
To allwkom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER J, MANDZUK, a citizen of Russia, residing at St. Catherines, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Cigar- Cutters and Match-Servers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination cigar cutter and match servers and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a device which when operated will deliver to the operator a single match.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device in which the operation of the cigar cutter will simultaneously operate the match delivering mechanism so that immediately that the cigar is cut and ready for use the match will be delivered to the operator.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a cigar cutter and match server constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrating in dotted lines the device in its operated position,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through the device taken at right angles to Fig. 1 and showing the relative position of the parts when the device is in delivering position.
- Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the base of the device having attached thereto a front wall '2, rear wall 3 and side walls 1. These walls form an upwardly extending box like structure for housing the delivering mechanism and matches' An interior division wall 5 is pr0- vided and inclines downwardly toward the rear wall 3 to a point near the said rear wall as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A vertical guide 6 extends between the wall 3 and the rear edge of the wall 5 and is spaced an equal distance from each. As shown in the drawing the upper and lower edges of this wall 6 are arranged at equal distances from the rear edge of the wall 5 and the lower edge thereof acts as a stop for limiting the movement of the Specification of Letters Patent.

carrier which will be more fully hereinafter described. In order to limit thefeed of the matches into the carrier a vertically extending wall 7 is arranged between the side walls 4 in parallel relation to the inner wall and spaced a short distance from the rear edge of the wall 6. The lower edge of this wall 7 is spaced from the upper face of the wall 5 so. that only one match may pass from the match reservoir into the delivering chamber at a time.
The carrier previously mentioned is designated generally by the numeral 8 and com prises a transversely U-shaped body which is slidably mounted on the guide 6 and has its outer leg extended beyond the inner leg as at 9 so that when the device is in normal position the outer leg will be between the wall 8 and the guide 6 with its upper edge slightly below the upper edge of said guide. In this way it will be seen that a trough will be formed for the reception of a match previous to its delivery. The upper edges of both legs of the U-shaped body of the carrier are inclined rearwardly and downwardly as at 10 in order to retain the match thereon, while the upper edge of the guide is likewise inclined as at 11 to cause a match placed thereon to roll into the trough previously mentioned. In order to return the carrier to its normal lowered position, a spring 12 is connected to an ear formed thereon and to the bottom wall 1 as at 13.
- The cigar cutter is designated generally by/the numeral 14 and comprises a lever 15 formed of two parallel bars connected at their outer ends by a web 16. These bars are pivotally connected to the front wall 2 and the web 16 is formed with an opening 17 in which the end of a cigar to be cut is inserted. Formed on the inner faces of the bars are flanges 18 which are slightly spaced below the web to form guides in which the cutter 19 is slidably mounted. This cutter is provided with a stem 20 which is pivotally connected to the wall 3 slightly below the pivot point of'thelever 15, so that when the lever is depressed, the cutter will be slid in the space between the guides and the web. As shown in the drawing the bars forming the lever 15 are extended rearwardly to a point beneath the carrier so that when the cutting end of the lever is depressed the carrier will be moved upwardly.
In operation it will be seen that when the user places the end of a cigar in the opening 17 and upon pressing the same it will be evident that the cutter will be slid so as to clip oil the end of the cigar. Simultaneously with the downward movement of the lever it will be seen that the U-shaped carrier will be moved upwardly so that the match resting on the upper edge of the shorter arm will be carried upwardly into such a position that it will roll onto the upper edge of the guide 6. It will also be seen that the upward movement of the carrier will move the match resting on the upper edge of the longer arm 8 onto the incline 11 from which it will roll into the trough 9 of the carrier and will be carried upwardly with the same until its end strikes the block 21 at which time the said end of the match will be depressed into the notch 22 in the leg 9 so as to cause the opposite end of said match to project through the slot 23 formed in the cover 24. It is of course to be understood that this cover is hingedly or otherwise removably secured to the device in any suitable manner.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred form of this invention it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the construction combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit'and scope of the invention as claimed.
hat is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing, an inclined wall in said casing, a partition wall within said casing cooperating with said inclined wall for forming a match reservoir, a guide within the casing,. a transversal U-shaped carrier slidable on said guide, having its outer leg extended beyond the inner leg and the upper edges of both legs inclined rearwardly, a lever for operating the carrier for receiving a match from said inclined wall on one of its legs and delivering the same to the upper edge of the guide upon the operation of the carrier and the other leg adapted to receive the match from said guide, a slotted cover for said casing, and a block adapted to be engaged by the outer leg of said carrier for depressing the lower end of a match into a notch of said outer leg and projecting its upper end through the slot in said cover,
and a spring secured to said carrier and the bottom of the casing for returning the carrier into its normal position.
In testimony whereof I have alfixed my signature.
PETER J. MANDZUK.
