Description

A. H. BRYANT. Improvement in Egg-Carriers. N0.129,3I'3.
Patented July 16, I872.
inventor I (m i/wmva Mg MW? g? .wM/mm STATES ABNER H. BRYANT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIER3.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,313, dated July 16,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER H. BRYANT, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in EggOarriers; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction-and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure-1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of one of the pockets of my egg-carrier. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the strips which compose it. Fig. 3 is a side view of the other strip; and Fig. 4 is a top view of the pocket.
This invention has relation to the means for transporting eggs; and consists, in the manner hereinafter described, of cutting and fitting together strips of pasteboard or other suitable material in order to produce tapering pockets having elastic walls, and adapted to hold and keep apart eggs placed therein for convenience and safety during their transportation, each pocket being of a size and form to hold a single egg.
Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents a rectangular strip of pasteboard or its equivalent, from the upper edge of which are cut the slots marked a, terminating below the middle part of said strip. These slots are cut in pairs, each pair distant from the adjacent pairs the width of the pocket to be formed. The slots of each pair converge from their lower ends to the upper edge of the strip, and are thus separated by an angular tongue, I). B designates a strip of past-eboard or its equivalent equal in length and width to the strip A.
From the lower edge of this strip are cut in pairs the short slots 0, running in the same direction from their upper ends as would continuations of the slots a, and about equal in length to said continuations if the same should extend to the lower edge of the strip A. In weaving these strips together to form the pockets represented by D, the strips A are brought underneath the strips B, at right angles thereto. Two of the strips A are placed beneath the coinciding pairs of slots 0 in the strips B. The strips B are then pressed down over the strips A in such a manner that the tongues b shall enter the space between the strips B while the strips B pass into the slots a, the strips A at the same time entering as far as possible the slots 0. The upper and lower edges of the respective strips being made to coincide, the result is the double walled, tapering, or pyramidal pocket or pockets represented by D. The tongues b and d serve to keep the walls of the egg-pockets apart and at the proper inclination, at the same time rendering them strong and stilf enough to preyent the eggs from getting too close together, or from slipping out of place hence, when these tongues are used thinner and less expensive stock may be used than in cases where the tongues are dispensed with.
Instead of using single strips of pasteboard, with the slots a cut fromone edge, a strip of double width may be used, the points of the tongues 12 meeting at a middle line, and the strip folded over. The strips B may be also double width, the slots 0 cut from both edges, and the strips folded over the same as the other.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp In an egg-carrier or tray, the strips A having the slots a cut from their upper edges in pairs, those of each pair separated by the angular tongues b, in combination with the strips B having the slots 0 running at the same inclination as the slots at, and separated by the dovetail tongues d, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABNER H. BRYANT.
Witnesses WM. H. GRAHAM, JOHN H. MARTIN.
