To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tissue and Needle-Extractin Forceps, of which the following is a speci cation.
My invention is an improvement in forceps, and has for its object to provide forceps adapted for surgical use, wherein the forceps have means for rasping the tissue to draw it together, and other means for clamping the needle to permit the same to be withdrawn, the grasping means and the clamping means being simultaneously controlled.

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to the line.
In the present embodiment of the invention the lmproved forceps comprises two blades 1 and 2 of resilient material, which are rigidly secured together at one end, as indicated at 3, as, for instance by a rivet or by soldering or brazing. The blades diverge from each other near the connection 3 for the greater portion of their length, afterward being curved toward each other at their free ends to form gripping jaws, and these jaws 4 are toothed as shown.
Adjacent to the gripping jaw the member 1 has a notch 5 in its lower edge, which is adapted to receive a needle 6, and a sliding shoe 7 is mounted on the member 1 to move toward and from the needle to grasp the needle. As shown, this shoe is in the form of a keeper inclosing the blade 1 and sliding thereon, a pin or rod 8 on the shoe engaging a slot 9 extending longitudinally of the blade.
A link 10 connects the shoe with the blade 2, the said link engaging at its ends pairs of spaced lugs 11 on the shoe and on the blade, and the link is connected to the lugs by screws 12. Because of this connection at 10 the shoe is moved toward the notch 5 when the blades are moved together into grasping position.
In use, the tissues to be brought to ether are grasped by the jaws 4 and are held together with the left hand. The needle 6 is then grasped by the usual needle forceps and forced through the tissues. The tissues are now held b the needle and may be released by the orceps 12 and the needle is grasped in the notch 5, the forceps again closed, and the needle is drawn through. The needle is then grasped with the usual needle holder and the next step is proceeded with as before.
I claim: r
1. A forceps of the character specified, comprising resilient blades rigidly secured together at one end and havlng gripping jaws at the other, one of said blades having a notch in its lower edge, a shoe mounted to slide on the said blade toward and from the notch to clamp a needle in the notch, and a connection between the said shoe and the other blade for moving the shoe toward the notch when the blades are closed, said shoe being a keeper slidable on the blade, the blade having a slot and the keeper a pin for engaging the slot to guide the movement of the shoe.
2. A forceps of the character specified, comprising resilient blades rigidly secured together at one end and hav1ng gripping jaws at the other, one of said blades havin a notch in its lower edge, a shoe mounte to slide on the said blade toward and from the notch to clamp a needle in the notch, and a connection between the said shoe and the other blade for moving the shoe toward the notch when the blades are closed, said connection comprising a link pivoted at one end to the shoe and at the other end to the opposite blade.
3. A forceps of the character specified, comprising resilient blades rigidly secured together at one end and havlng gripping jaws at the other, one of said blades havin the notch to clamp a needle in the notch, and a connection between the said shoe and the other blade for movingthe shoe toward,
the notch when the blades are closed.

A forceps of the character specified comprising blades having gripping jaws at one end, one of the blades having a notch in one edge, a shoe mounted to slide on the blade toward and from the notch to clamp a needle in the notch, and a connection between the. shoe and theother blades formoving the shoe toward the notch when the blades are closed. 7
