OTTO BACI-IE AND CHARLES BERG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. l
SCRAPER FOR BOILER HAND-HOLES.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it lrnown that we, Giuro BAoHn and CHARLES BERG, a subject of the Emperor of Germany and a citizen of the United States, respectively, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and Starte of Galifornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scrapers for Boiler Handll-loles, of which the following is a specilication.
rllhe present invention is an improvement upon that o-n which Letters Patent, No. 1,239,754, were granted to us on September 11, 1917.
Many stationary and marine boilers, such as the Edgeinore boiler, have elliptical hand holes.
@ne obje-ct of the invention is to provide a scraper particularly adapted for scraping such boilers.
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the invention shown as applied to a boiler. F ig. 2 is an end view of the same Ishowing the inner surface of the hand hole sheet. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 8 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the hand hole sheet of a water tube boiler and 2 the hand hole therethrough which in the present instance are approximately elliptical. Il indicates a plate, also elliptical in form, and adapted to rest against the hand hole sheet 1 and having screwed to its inner surface as shown at 5 a wall 6 extending at a uniform distance from the margin of the sheet and therefore also approximately of the form of an ellipse which, however, is in complete, said wall 6 being adapted 'to fit against the inner edge of said hand hole and forming a support for an elliptical cam 21. Said plate is formed integral with a central sleeve 7 terminating at its outer end in handles 8 extending in opposite directions on both sides of said sleeve. Said sleeve forms a bearing for a spindle 9 having a handle 10 at one end, and to the other end of which is attached by a set screw 11, a tubular head 12, which carries a transversely extending guideway 18. In said guideway are guided slide bars 14, the outer ends of which are enlarged in width, as shown at 16, to form blade carriers. Blades 17, each provided at opposite ends with c utting edges 18, are pivotally attached to said blade carriers by screws 19, and thus automatically adjust their position to contact as closely as pos- Specication of Letters Patent.

sible with the surface being scraped. In
order that the blades may scrape the inner tical paths as the spindle 9 is turned. For' this purpose the elliptical cam 21 extends inwardly from the plate 4f, and the blade carriers 16 are formed with transversely extending recesses 22 adapted to receive the inner edge of said cam. To reduce the fricti-on between the blade carriers and the inner surface of said cam, said carriers are provided withv rollers 23 which roll against said inner surface.
The cutting edges of said blades are pressed against the inner surface of the hand hole sheet by a spring 24 coiled around the spindle 9 and compressed between the outer end of the sleeve 7 and a collar 26 on said spindle. When said cutting edges are so pressed against said hand hole sheet, the spindle 9 is turned by means of a handle 10 secured thereto, thereby causing the cutting edges of the blades to travel over said sheet and scrape the same.
1n order to insert the blades through the hand hole in the boiler there is provided around the spindle 9 a short tube 28, from which extend in opposite directions round bars 29. By turning said tube 28 on said spindle so that the bars 29 extend in the same plane as the handles 8, the bars 29 and handle 8 can be grasped by the two hands and the plate can be drawn back from the blades a suiiicient distance to allow, lirst one blade carrier, and then the other, to be inserted through the hand hole. @ne end of the elliptical cam 21 is cut away or spaced from the plate, as shown at 30, to permit the device to be moved laterally, when the inner adjacent portion thereof has been inserted in the hand hole, a suilicient distance to permit also the inner opposite portion, including the other end of said cam, to be so inserted. After the whole of the inner portion of the device has been inserted, the hands from the handles 8 and bars 29 are removed and the blades are then firmly pressed against the inner surface of the hand hole sheet by the spring 24. Then, upon turning the spindle 9 by means of the handle 10 the blades 4can be moved over said surface while still `pressing thereagainst, and thereby, by reason of the elliptical form of the cam, and also by reason of the wall 6 fitting snugly in the hand hole, the inner surface of the hand hole sheet immediately around the hand hole can be thoroughly scraped. A
rThe spindle 9 has a shoulder 31 engaging an end of a short tube 32 driven tightly into the sleeve 7 to limit the outward movement of the spindle.
We claim In an implement of the class described, the combination of a rotary spindle, a bearing for the spindle provided IWith means for engaging the outer side of a sheet having a hole therethrough, blade carriers carried by said spindle and removable transversely thereto, resilient means for pressing the blade carriers toward the sheet, blades carried by said blade carriers, and a cam xedly related to said means and adapted to extend inwardly through said hole When said means engage said sheet and controlling the transverse movement of said blade carriers in their rotation with the spindle, a portion of the cam being spaced from said engaging means to facilitate the passage of the cam through said hole.
