WINDOW WASHERS GUARD CLAMP. APPLICATIVUN FILED APR. 12. um.

,"iJVINlDUW-WASl-IERS GUARD-GLAIVIP.
Application tiled April 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concer/z Be it known that l, Urro V. PETERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of (lak Park, county of Cook, and A@tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vlindow-Nashers Guard-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window washers7 guard clamps andhas for its object the production of a device of this character, which will be adapted for ready and expeditious unlocking and release, and in which the movable locking pawl will be effectually guarded and guided in its pivotal movement.
A further object is the production of a guard clamp of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which will be adapted for temporary support when not in use, and which, generally speaking, will be of high efficiency. j
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
l The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
rFhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary transverse section through a window, in conjunction with which is shown a window washers guard clamp, embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the clamp detached,
Fig. 3 is a partially sectional side elevation of the clamp, and
Fig. l is a central vertical section of the clamp, showing the same engaged with the anchoring` studs provided for engagement therewith upon the window frame.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an elongated metallic body 5 provided at its rearward side with an elongated, longitu dinally extending, downwardly opening slot 6. The slot 6 is adapted for engagement with the headed studs or bolts 7 which are provided in the frame 8 of the window in connection with which the guard is emf ployed, as will be readily understood. The
slot 6 is of a width to snugly receive the Specification of Letters Patent.

shank or reduced portions of the studs 7,
the heads `,of the latter beingjadapted to engage against the front side of the clamp body, as clearly illustrated iin Fig. 4:.
j Fivotally mountedupon the clamp body at the front side thereof, on a pivotpin 9, is a pawl l0 adapted, when A.in operative position, to engage behind or under the uppermost stud 7 engaged by theclagmp, in order to lockthe clamp in engagementtherewith, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. Said pawl is normally held in operative position by means of a helical compression spring 11 which engages against a finger piece ,or extensionjl, formed upon said pawl, said portion 1Q as well as the adjacent portion of the body of the clamp Ibeing formed with recesses 13 and 14, respectively, for the accommodation of the respective ends of said spring. The outer side of theclamp bodyis recessed, as at 15, to accommodate the pawl extension 12 upon depression of thesame.` The arrangement is such, as will be seen, that the spring 11 is entirely inclosed, avoiding the possibility of accidental displacement or iujury which might result from exposure of the same. Formed at the lower end `of the clamp body is an eye l16 `adapted for engagement by the guard rope 16` with which the clamp cooperates when in use. Formed at one side of the eye 16 is a second eye 17 adapted for the support of the water bucket 17 employed by the window washer, `as clearly seen in Fig. 1. The eyes 16 and 17 are disposed forwardly of the plane of the rear face of the clamp body, so that," when the latter is engaged with `the anchoring studs 7 of the window frame, said eyes will be spaced from the adjacent side `lof the window 4frame so as to avoid any likelihood of the same being broken off and permit of ready and easy engagement with the eye 17 of the water bucketsupporting hook. ln guard clamps of this `cliaiacteigpin `use `at the present time, j an eye similar to the eye 17 is employed, but the same is positioned at the rearward side of the clamp body where the same is exposed to knocks and jars fre- ,quently resulting in the same being broken ofi' and in such a position as to render it ditlicult to engage the water bucket supporting hook therewith.
Formed at the upper end of the clamp, at the front side thereof, is a sort of housing 18, into the lower end of which projects the upper end of the pawl 10, said housing thus serving as a guard or protection for said end of the pawl, and the sides of said housing serving as a guide to reinforce the pawl against lateral shifting, as will be readily understood. The front side of the housing 18 is formed with a downwardly opening slot or notch 19 adapted for engagement with a headed stud 19 provided upon the belt 19 which is worn by the window washer in order to temporarily hold or support the clamp, when the same is not in use. In clamps such as are used at the pres ent time, no provision is made for the support of the same when out of use, and as a result, the clamps are permitted to simply dangle at the ends of the guard rope. Vith applicants arrangement, however, the clamp may be readily and easily engaged with the supports 19 upon the belt of the washer, and thus conveniently held until again put to use.
With the construction set forth it will be seen that the pawl 10 may be readily and easily rocked to releasing position in order to disengage the clamp by simply depressing the finger piece or extension 12 of the clamp, thev latter being advantageously located for convenient engagement by the thumb of the user. In order to afford further means of Vready releasing movement of the pawl. the
upper end portion of the latter is formed comparatively thick so as to afford comparatively wide lateral surfaces 20 adapted for ready engagement by the ngers of the user. One side of the pawl is preferably formed with two recesses and the other side with a single recess, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2, for ready accommodation of two fingers and the thumb of the user. The clamps are used in pairs, one at each end of the guard rope, and the pawls used in the plamps at the opposite end of the guard rope will be similarly formed, that is, the recesses 20 will be arranged so that the single recess or that adapted for engagement with the thumb of the user will be positioned at the side next to the user in both clamps.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A window washers guard clamp comprising an elongated body having a longitudinally extending slot at its rearward side opening at one end of said body, and adapted to receive headed anchoring elements; a pawl pivotally mounted on said body adapted for engagement with an anchoring element engaging in said slot; a helical compression spring coperating with said pawl to normally hold the same in 0perative position, and registering recesses in said pawl and body engaged by and completely inclosing said spring, substantially as described.
2. A window washers guard clamp comprising an elongated body having a longitudinally extending slot at its rearward side opening at one end of said body, and adapted to receive headed anchoring elements; a pawl pivotally mounted on said body adapted for engagement with an anchoring ele ment engaging in said slot; and resilient means entirely inclosed by said pawl and body coperating with said pawl to normally hold the same in operative position, substantially as described.
3. A Window washers guard clamp comprising an elongated body having a longitudinally extending slot at its rearward side opening at one end of said body, and adapted to receive headed anchoring elements; a pawl pivotally mounted on said body adapted for engagement with an anchoring element engaging in said slot; and resilient means coperating with said pawl to normally hold the same in operative position, said pawl being comparatively thick to form comparatively wide surfaces for engagement by the fingers in rocking said pawl, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence o1' two subscribing witnesses.
