To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. MELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Broom, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brooms and particularly to that type of broom commonly termed a corn or tampico brush broom.

The object of my present invention is to provide a broom of the type mentioned with an auxiliary adjustable member, said member being provided with a finer material than either the corn or tampico bristles, for the purpose hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing I have shown my improved broom sufficient for those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation of same.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of my improved broom.

Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the broom shown at Fig. 1.

In the accompanying drawing 10 is the brush holder having secured therein the brush bristles 17, said bristles being composed of corn, tampico or like material.

The member 10 has secured thereto, at either end, two upwardly extending members 12 and 13 said members 12 and 13 terminating at their upper ends in a holder 14 into which the handle 15 is secured.

Slidably mounted on the member 12 and 13 is an auxiliary member 16, said member having secured therein a plurality of bristles 17, said bristles being formed of material such as horse hair, or like material; said bristles 17 project downwardly through openings 18 in the member 10 and around the outside edges of the coarse bristles 11.

Secured on the member 10 is a casting 18 which engages an enlarged end 19' of a threaded rod 19, said rod extending upwardly through the member 16 and a threaded nut 20 secured to the member 16, said rod terminating in the lower end of the handle 15, said rod having secured thereon a thumb nut 21 by which said rod may be turned.

I will now briefly describe the operation of the above mentioned parts.

By means of the combination of the coarse and fine bristles 11 and 17 I provide an efficient broom for loosening and sweeping clean the dirt, the coarse bristles 11 being provided for loosening the dirt and the finer and softer bristles 17 for cleaning.

It is very evident that the finer bristles 17 will wear out faster than the coarse bristles 11, therefore I have provided an adjustable member 16 for holding the finer bristles 17 which are of greater length than the coarse ones.

- By means of the thumb nut 21 the threaded rod 19 may be revolved and through the engagement of the rod 19 with the nut 20 secured on the member 16, will cause said member 16 to be carried upwardly or downwardly as desired, thereby adjusting the length of the bristles 17 extending around the outer edges of the coarse bristles 11.

Having thu described my invention it will be evident that many changes may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, therefore I do not wish to be limited to the specific details herein disclosed, particularly as to the material disclosed in forming the bristles, but What I claim is 1- 1. In a broom, a handle, a frame secured to said handle, a brush member secured to said frame in combination with an auxiliary brush member slidably mounted on said frame.

2. In a broom, a handle, a frame secured to said handle, a brush member secured to said frame, a second brush member mounted within said frame with means to adjust said second brush member in relation to said first mentioned member.

3. In a broom, a handle, a frame secured to said handle, a plurality of brush members mounted within said frame, said members being adjustable in relation to one another with adjusting means for said members.
