BOLESLAW TOMASZEWICZ, 0F FLINT, MICHIGAN.
RAILROAD-JOINT.
Application iled December 30, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.' v
Be it known that I, BoLEsLAw ToMAszn wrcz, a subject of the Czar of Russia, resident of Flint, county of Genesee, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroacl-Joi.nts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joint connections, and has as its prin cipal object the provision of means whereb)r the abutting ends of the rails may be positively and rigidly secured against longitudinal or lateral movement and without the use of bolts or other clamping means.
Another obj ect is to provide means whereby the joints are materially strengthened and by which the use of joint plates or similar separate securing elements is avoided.
These and other objects are atta-ined by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafterdescribed and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a side elevational view of the device according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig, 3.
Fig. 3 shows the connection used between abutting rails in cross-section, and
Fig. 4 is a partial top plan view and section showing the connection between two rails.
As illustrated, the rail consists of a base l0, web or stem l1 and head l2, and is provided with a short tenon or extending member 20 having lateral projections 21 protruding from each side.
The connectingelement is formed with a` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
serial No. 139,957.
head 25, base flange 26, and central or body portion 27, the saine being uniformly thick `with the head 25 and having recesses 28 at both ends extending centrally inward from the ends and below the head portion of the rail.
Extending outward laterally from the recesses 28 are cavities 30 so formed and lo cated as to receive the projections 21 whereby the rail ends are held positively within the connection and against longitudinal movement in either direction, as will be best seen in Fig. 4f. This connection is of such length as to act as an insert between adjacent rails, and is provided with openings 3Q to receive ordinary track spikes such as are used to secure the rails in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
The combination with the meeting ends of a pair of rails said rails being spaced apart, the connecting webs of said rails being extended beyond the ends thereof. lugs formed upon the opposite sides of said con necting webs equally distant from the ends thereof, a connecting member for said rails said connecting memberhaving slots in the ends thereof, opening through the under sid(` thereof and offset at the opposite ends. adapted to receive said lugs whereby the rails will be held in their spaced relation substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature this 18th day of November, 1916.
BOLESLAVV TOMASZEWICZ.
