Description

Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
INVENTOR O. W. ARMAGOS T.
'ATTORHEY I v l a an;
I OSCAR w. ARMAGOST, or WATERLOO, IOWA.
noon-OPERATING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 28, 1918. SeriaI'No. 214,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR W.v ARMAoos'r, a Citizen of the United'States of America, and. a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk count Iowa, have inventedcerta'in new and usefu Improvements in-- Door Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door operating means, and the object of my improvement is to provide an operating device with .connections to a door or-doors,
. adapted to open or close the doors from a relatively distant location, and to hold the door or doors releasablyina desired position or positions This object I' have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated 'inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the operating mechanism of m'y'device, and 'Fig; 2 is a reduced scale section of a door-frame and doors, showing the operative connections therefor adapted for operation by the mechanism shown in said Fig.1.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
' The operating meakam'sm.This comprises a winding-drum 1 fixed on a shaft 2, the ends of the latter being rotatablymounted in bearing orifices in opposite parts 4 and 5 of a closed frame, open at top and bottom, and fixedly mounted on a vertically arranged back-plate 7 adapted to be secured removably to some fixed support such 'as' a wall or post.-
' On the forward end of said shaft; is mounted a handled crank 3 for manually rotating the shaft ineither direction. On the end of the winding-drum opposite said crank is fixed a ratchet-wheel 6 with rectangular teeth adapted to be releasably engaged by a double toothed pawl 10, the latter pivoted on a intle orstud 9 projected from the plate with an ori ce.- A pin '11 can be thrust through this orifice and into another orifice behind in the plate 7, when it'is desired to hold the pawl poised in an'intennediate position with both teeth disengaged from the ratchet-wheel 6. The forward part 5 of said frame may be supported b a brace 8 mounted on the plate 7 un erneat'h it.
Said pawl has an integral medial upright armor member provided Upon said Winding-drum are, reversely wound'the cables 12 and 13.
Operative connections to theclaora-Referring now to said Fig. 2, the numerals 25 and 26' denote a pair of doors hinged to jambs 27 of a doorway in a Wall structure 28. On the outer faces of said doors are mounted fixed blocks containing sheaves 20 and 21 respectively. Other sheaves 18 and 19 are mounted rotatably infixed blocks supported independently of the doors with out the latter. Within the building are fixedly supported blocks containing rotatable sheaves 16,- 17 and 22. Eyes 23 and 24 are fixed to the inner faces of said doors respectively near their swinging ends. On the "free. ends of thecables 12 and 13 are blocks containing rotatable sheaves 14.
The numeral 15 denotes a cable,one.end
of which is secured to the eye 23, then passed over the sheave 17, then over the loose sheave .14 on the cable, 12, then over the sheaves 16 and 22, and has its other end secured to the eye 24.
The numeral 29 denotes another cable, one
. end of which is secured to the fixed sheave 21 on the door-frame near the door 26, thence carried about the fixed sheave 18, then about the loose sheave 14 on the cable 13, then back teeth of the ratchet-wheel to then hold the same and said drum in a desired position to hold the doors in a certain position, open or closed, and the connecting cables may be so arranged on respectively disconnected as to causebut one of the doors to be operated.
The device is found convenient for use in garages, or other structures where it. may
be desirable to operate the doors from a' dis tance.
A gawl 30 is pivoted on a pintle 32 projecte forwardly from the rear part of the frame, and has asquared detent to engage teeth of the ratch-wheel. The pawl also has a finger-piece 31, for manual use in moving the pawl into or out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel, and this pawl is held in engagement by its own gravity. This pawl 30 is only used when it is desired to hold the door or doors in a desired open position, forpurposes of ventilation or otherwise, and is ordinarily kept out of engagernent with the ratchet-wheel.
It is to be understood that the operative connections may be so disposed with their sheaves as to operate a sliding door or doors, without departing from the principles of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: e
'1. In combination, a winding-drum havinga ratchet-wheel fixed thereon, a doublydentated pawl operatively engaging teeth of said ratchet-wheel, said pawl being medially pivotally suspended over said ratchetwheel and having an orificed upright medial arm, a pin releasably passed through the orifice in said arm to secure it to an engaging-means to hold the pawl disengaged from the ratchet-wheel, cables wound reversely' about said drum, and flexible operative independent connections movably connected between the free ends of said cablesrespectively and opposite sides of doors adapted to be operated by said drum and cables to move the doors in synchronisln to and fro.
2. In combination, a door-casing, a pair of doors hinged to the jambs of said casing to swing to and fro to both sides of the lane of the casing, and means for swingmg said doors simultaneously in either direction from the casing and back again to open or closed positions relative to the Y casing, comprising a winding-drum, lndependent cables wound reversely on said wlndlng-drum, sheaves. mounted on the outer ends of said cables, a pair of fixedlyinounted sheaves, a cable passed over the .ends secured respectively to the opposite side of the doors relative to said casing;
3. In combination, a door, a windingdrum, cables wound reversely upon said drum, pulleys secured on the free ends of said cables, independent flexible operative connections movably connected between said pulleys respectively and said door, means for releasably holding said drum in ositions of rotation to hold the'door in a fully opened or closed condition, and other means for independently holding said drum in a position of rotation to holdthe door in an intermediate position as desired.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 11th day of Jan. 1918.
OSCAR W. ARMAGOST.
