the art to which it appertains to malxe and.
use the same.
This invention relates to furniture and more particularly to toilet cabinets, and it is one of the objects of the present nvent on to provide a toilet cabinet which Wlll facilltate the dressing and washing of infants and which also provides as a further ob 'ect for the convenientdispositionofawash-tu orabathtub or a basin in roximity to an ordinary bath-tub or elsewhere, it being also a further object of the invention to provide adressmg or washing cabinet in which the various conveniences may be kept readily at hand for the use of the atten ant or user of the device. It is a further object of the inventron to provide a dressing or toilet cabinet wh ch is adapted to be disposed in such a pos1t10n to a bath-tub of ordinary construction so as to occupy a little space in the room in which the article could be utilized and particularly .to provide for the disposition of the cabinet ad acent one end of the bath -tub so as to provide for swinging downwardl over the bath-tub a toilet table structure w ereon the infant may be laid to be dressed and washed, and in this respect the invention has for an object a toilet structure having a suitable table conveniently connected to the case of the cabinet at a plane approximately equal to the height of the rim of the bathtub above the floor so that the leaf or table may be swung down to rest upon or be held in close overlapping relation to the top of the bath-tub.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the convenient and ready attach-- ment of the water supply means of the bath tub to the wash-basin or bath-tub carried by the swinging or folding member of the cabinet and further to provlde for the draining of the water after it has been used in the cabinet bath directly into the bath-tub, it being in other words'a particular object of the presentinvention to provide a sanitary, inexpensive, practicable, and compactly arran baby dressing and bathing cabinet. It Is also an object of the present invention to provide a convertible medicine cabinet and bathing apparatus in which the various parts are designed to be compactly folded together when not in use, so as to present a neat and attractive appearance.
With the above and other objects in View as will be readil manifest in the following specification, diderent embodiments of my rnventlon are illustrated in the accompanymg drawings, the invention consisting in the construction, a combination of the parts, the details of arrangement and elements of construction as more particularly pointed out 1n the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cabinet adapted for use as a bathing and dressing apparatus in which the table structure is shown as extended in horizontal position to support a bath or wash basin over the top of an ordinary bath-tub.
Fig. 2 shows a similar view in which the bath or wash basin is omitted from the swinging or folding structure, to provide the latter for a simple table, only.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the cabinet showing the table structure folded into vertical position to conceal the wash or bath-tub.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the wash or bath-basin, folded over the main side or table section of the cabinet, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the cabinet of such structure that it is adapted to be disposed upon the end of a bath tub when there is insuiilcient room between the end of the tub and the adjacent wall structure to receive the base of the cabinet between the wall and the end of the tub.
The cabinet comprises a case 2 preferably having a depth substantiallyequal to or slightly greater than the width of an ordinary bath-tub which is shown at B, that side of the case 2 which is disposed toward the bath-tub being provided with a swinging side portion forming a table structure comprising the main portion '3 hinged along one edge as at 4 at the shelf or bottom portion 5 within the casing, the area of the table member 3 being substantially equal to the Lessee? area of the side of the cabinet above the line of the hinge 4. Preferably I construct the cabinet with a base portion, the ends 6--6 of which extend downwardly to the floor, the lower portion of the cabinet being provided with drawers which slide depthwise into or from the cabinet for the convenient use of the attendant or user of the device standing at the side of the bath-tub B, when the leaf or table portions are swung down to a horizontal position for the convenient use in the changing or dressin or washing of the infant; the drawers (-7 opening outwardly and inwardly through one of its ends 2 of the cabinet. As shown in Fig. 2 the side or table forming member 3 of the cabinet has hinged to its outer or swinging edge as at '8 an extension leaf 9 adapted to be swung outwardly over the top of the bath-tub as shown and provides therefore an increased area.
Preferably the extension 9 of-the tilting table is provided with a wash or bath-basin 10 which if desired may be detachably connected to its leaf or carrying portion 9, the
rim of the tub being countersunk into the table 9 so that the latter may be folded over the section 3 of the table as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 .so that when the folded leaf members ,3 and 9 are swung upwardly the washbasin 10 which overlies the main table 3 is carried into the case of the cabinet 2 and is concealed as. shown in Fig. 3.
While the horizontal plane of the hinges 4 connecting the table forming side 3 to the case may be suitably disposed vertically as to the cabinet, in the event that the extended table section 3 .does not rest upon the rim of the bath-tub or is used independently, the table or dressing portion may be supported by folding or swinging legs 3 suitably attached to the outer corners of the table section 3 so that when the latter is in horizontal position the legs 3 may be swung down to vertical position to carry the weight of the table and various objects thereon and when the table is to be folded to vertical position the legs 3' are folded over the top surface of the table 3 as clearly shown in Figs. {1 and 5. It is one of the features of y, the present invention to provide for the safe suspension of the table section 3 in the event that the swinging leg 3' should be knocked accidentally fromsupporting position and to that end I provide as a suitable support or suspension device, a chain, cord or other flexible connecting member 3 attached to the opposite edge of the table section 3' from that adjacent which the user of the device may stand, so that the suspension member 3" is carried out of the way and does not interfere with the use of the table.
Similarly for supporting the extension leaf of the table 9 in horizontal position in the event that it does not rest upon the rim of the tub, foldable legs 9' are attached to the outer edges or corners of the folding leaf 9 to support this section.
It is desired to provide for the attachment to the bath-tub faucet of means to discharge the water directly into the wash-basin carried by the swinging section 9 and to that end this latter is shown as provided with a tube or short piece of pipe 11 preferably embedded into the material of which the section 9 is formed so as to leave the upper surface of the latter smooth and uninterrupted, the inner end of the tube being provided with a down turned spout or discharge mouth 11. Its opposite end projects slightly beyond the outer edge of the leaf 9 as shown at 12 to receive a flexible hose or tube 13 which is adapted to be connected to the faucet of the bath-tub as shown in Fig. 1.
When the wash-basin 10 is in use it is desirable that the water used be discharged directly into the bath-tub and for that purpose the bath-tub or basin 10 is provided with a suitable form of discharge drain 14 in its bottom portion, which will permit the water to drain continuously from the bath tub, if it is desired while it is be'm'g supplied with water through the connection 13.
It is one of the important features of the present invention to provide a cabinet of this type which will conveniently hold all of the various articles which may be required in the dressing or bathing of an infant and to that end the casing is provided with suitable cleats 16 or other appropriate means for supporting removable shelves 17 which may be inserted in position as desired, and also, for the holding of smaller articles such as soap, brushes, toilet powders or the like, there are provided a plurality of disappearin receptacles 18 which preferably are hing 1y connected to the ends 6 of the casing 2 sothat each may be individually swung outwardly to convenient position for the use of the ap paratus, or may be swung into concealed position when the cabinet is not being used and when it is desired to conceal the wash-tub or basin within the cabinet.
By disposing the receptacle 18 on the end wall 6, there may be compactly arranged so as not to interfere with the wash-basin or tub 10 which'latter will, when it is concealed in the cabinet, occupy a position between the inwardly swung receptacles 18 thus conserving space and obtaining compact arrangement of the parts.
Towels, wash-rags or other pieces of cloth may be conveniently disposed of by being hung upon the bars 19 each of which is about the length of about one half of the depth of be of various length and otherwise suitably disposed within the. cabinet.
As a preventive against articles which may be placed upon the folding table 3 being pushed into the case 2, the pivotal edge of the table section 3 is provided with a guard rail 20.
While one form of my invention which is illustratedin Fig. 1 is shown as provided with a downwardly extending body portion to provide a compartment for the drawer 7 and which form of device is useful in case where there is suflicient space at the end of the bath-tub B and the adjacent wall of the room, yet the invention also contemplates construction of a dressing and bath cabinet for infants, in such form that it can'be utilized in convenient position with relation to a bath-tub as shown in Fig. 5 where there is insufficient space between theends of the bath-tub and the adjacent wall and therefore that form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5 does not include the drawer compartment in the lower portion of the cabinet so that the latter is adapted to overhang and if desired, rest upon the adjacent end of the bath tub as well as being supported by any suitable fastening means as screws or otherwise,
by which it may be connected to the adjacent wall, in such an obvious manner as thought not necessary to be shown.
It is furthermore very desirable to provide a cabinet which is readily convertible from a dressing and bath cabinet into a medicine cabinet so that when the necessity for use of the article as a bath cabinet may have ceased, its use may be extended by providing it for V the reception of various articles, such as, hottles of medicine, various toilet boxes or other artlcles usually kept in a medicine cabinet.
This convertibility is readily achieved byremoving the wash 0r bath-basin 10 from the outer table section 9 and inserting the desired number of the removable shelves 17- in the case 2 so that they could occupy the space which is reserved as, for the basin 10 when the latter is attached, to the table section 9 and the side member 3 closed to vertical position.
In these several illustrations, only one shelf 17 is shown as introduced into the cabend of a tub to serve as a dressing table, and
having at its outer edge a hinged extension leaf provided. with a wash-basin countersunk below the surface of the extension to lie in the tub in one position and to swing over the table and be carried by the latter into the cabinet.
2. A baby toilet cabinet comprising a dresser adapted for arrangement above one end of an ordinary bath tub, one side panel of the dresser hingedly connected at its lower edge to the cabinet and adapted to be swung from vertical closed position to a hori zontal position over the adjacent end of a tub to serve as a dressing table and having at its outer edge a hinged extension leaf provided with a wash-basin to lie in the tub in one position and to swing over the table and be carried within the cabinet.
3. The combination in a baby toilet cabinet, of a case having a swinging anel section forming a closure therefor an provided with a wash-basin and supply tube or duct arranged below the top surface of the section to leave the latter smooth and having one end adapted for connection to a source
