MOSES F. FAT'ION, OF TUSCALOOSA. ALABAMA, ASS IGNOR'TO A. SCI-IRADERS SON, INCORPORATED, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DUST-GUARD FOR PNEUMATIC-TIRE VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses F. PA'rToN, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Tuscaloosa, in the county of Tusof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dust guards for the valve stems of pneumatic tires, and its objects are to simplify and reduce the cost of construction of devices of this character, to effectively exclude water from gaining access to the inner tube, to reduce to a minimum the number of parts, and 1" quickly and easlly removed and at the same to adapt them to give ready access to the tire valve for testing or inflating the inner tube.
According to, my invention '1 provide a tubular thimble having a body I portion adapted to be passed through the folly and to be expanded or fastened in place therem, made slightly tapered to efi'ect a water tig t'fit in the folly opening without the use of a. washer.
A further feature of my invention is to make integral with such thimble a means for attaching the dust cap thereto so as to leave the valve stem free of connection to the dust cap or thimble.
' My invention further comprises the details of construction and arrangements of parts which in their preferred embodiments only are hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 2-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the wheel felly with my dust guard in place therein. v
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the thimble.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the dust cap.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification of my invention.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, I show a Wheel felly 1 of any standard design having a metal rim 2 mounted thereon, both parts having alining radial openings to form a socket for the reception of the body portion 3 of a tubular thimble. This body portion is provided at one end with a taper enlargement 4 which joins an annular flange 5, beyond which. is a threaded extension 6. This integral thimble is adapted to be driven from the inside outwardly through the opening in the felly, until its shoulder 5'abuts the folly, when its taper portion 4 will be wedged so tightly in the folly opening as to make a water tight fit therein. The outer end of the thimble body is beaded or expanded into engagement with the metal rim 2, whereby the thimble is permanently and rigidly held in place. A dust cap 7 is provided having at its inner end a threaded portion Sadapted to screw onto the threaded portion 6 of the thimble. Only a small number of threads are required for the portions 6 and 8 whereby the dust cap can be time the valve stem can be taken out and replaced without the necessity of removing the dust cap.
Referring to Fi 4, I herein illustrate a thimble having a ody portion 9 provided with a taper enlargement 10 and an annular flange 11, which parts are similar respectively to the parts .3, 4 and 5 of the thimble illustrated in Fig. 2, except that-the flange 11 is made thicker than the flange 5. The flange 11 carries a tubular extension 12 having near the flange an annular groove 13 and having its outer end beveled at 14. A dust cap 15 is provided at its open end with an enlarged shoulder 16 having preferabl the same diameter and thickness as the flange 11 and provided internally with a channel or groove in which is seated an annular compressible packing 17 The inner bore of the cap 15 is of such diameter as to make a snug fit over the cylindrical extension 12 and the packing l7 normally projects into the bore of the dust cap so that it must be contracted and compressed into its groove before the cap can be forced. in either direction over the unreduced portion of the extension. This packing when the cap is seated against the flange 11 will expand into the groove 13 and hold the dust cap against displacement while permitting it to be drawn off or replaced with a quick strong pull or push axially of the thimble. This method of mounting the dust cap on the tubular base member is shown and claimed specifically-- in Patent No. 1.162,099, granted to me No- Patented Dec. 1'7, 1918.
