AUTOMATIC LOW-WATER FUEL SHUT-OFF.

To all QUILOHL it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST G. OFELDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nyack-on-the-Hudson, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Low-Water Fuel Shut- Ofls; and I do hereby declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic low water fuel shut-offs and par' ticularly to such as are adapted for use in controlling the supply of fuel to the burners of a steam boiler furnace,the object of the invention being to provide simple and ellicient means operative automatically when the water level in the boiler descends abnormally to stop the supply of fuel to the burners and permit the fuel supply valve to be opened manually.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation partly broken away, of a regulator embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view partly in section, taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
1 represents a float chamber or receptacle which may have a general tapering shape and provided at its larger end with nipples 2, 3 adapted for the reception of suitable pipes (not shown) for connecting said float chamber or receptacle with a steam boiler above and below the normal water level thereof.
A shaft 4 is mounted in suitable bushing 5 entering the smaller end of the receptacle 1, said shaft terminating at its inner end within said receptacle. A float 6 capable of withstanding steam pressure, is located within the larger portion of the receptacle 1 and is connected, by an arm or lever 7 with the inner end of the shaft 4:. An arm 8 is secured to the projecting end of the shaft 4 and with the free end of this arm, one end of a tubular rod 9 is connected, by means of a coupling 10 pivoted to said arm and threaded into the upper end of said tubular rod. endof the tubular rod 9 and is freely movable in the same,the casing 13 of said valve being adapted for connection with a source of fuel supply and with the burners of a steam boiler furnace.
An annular disk or collar 14; is secured to valve stem 11 and the curved upper end portion 15 of a spring 16 engages said disk and operates normally to hold the fuel valve open, said spring being provided at its lower end with a lateral portion 17 secured to the valve casing.
Under normal conditions, the fuel valve will be held open by the spring 16 and the fuel (either liquid or gaseous) will be permitted to flow to the burners, but when the level of the water in the boiler falls below normal, the descent of the float 6 will cause a partial rotation of the shaft 4 and motion will be imparted, through the arm 8 to the tubular rod 9, causing the latter to engage the disk 14, overcome the resistance of the spring 16 and effect the closing of the valve 12 to stop the supply of fuel to the burners. When the water level again becomes normal, the valve 12 may be opened manually and latched by the spring 12 and disk 14.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a control device, the combination with a chamber adapted for connection with a boiler above and below the normal water level, of a shaft entering said chamber, a float within said chamber operatively con nected with said shaft, an arm secured to the projecting portion of said shaft, a rod connected with said arm, and a fuel valve having a part to be engaged by said rod to force said fuel valve toward its seat when the float descends abnormally.
2. In a control device, the combination with a chamber adapted for connection with a boiler above and below the normal water level, of a shaft entering said chamber, a float connected with said shaft, a fuel valve, an arm on said shaft, a rod connected with said arm and having movable relation to the stem of the valve, an enlargement on the stem of the valve in position to be engaged by said rod, and a spring latch device to engage said enlargement and normally hold the valve open.
